    Default Pretty Epic ...

So Epic, the company behind Unreal and the Unreal Engine, has made a radical shift in business strategy.
They make available the Unreal Engine 4 _and_ a whole suite of advanced cross platform tools almost for free.

    Screw Unity... I demand NC3 on UE4 now™ !!!!11

I read the article elsewhere on the net. Interesting business model. Five % of gross revenue. That could prove very lucrative if the game takes off. I think it will help the Indie developers though due to the scope of resources supplied for very little.

If nothing else it's some pretty epic pr.

    I would agree.
After all you get unrestricted access to a next-gen engine with complete source and not to forget the excellent tool-chain.
Until you make any money from the game it will cost you a total of $19 (aka nothing) - the subscription is not even required to be kept active during development. This is going to be very appealing to indie devs. Crytec has already responded by introducing a similar model. I'm curious to see what the folks behind Unity are going to do now.

As for the 5% being lucrative in the long run ... just look at Apple - they claim a whopping 30% and still it seems to be worthwhile for many devs to participate in that ecosystem. I don't think a 5% is asking much, given the product you get in return.

I just wish I had more time to dabble with it - sure has come a long way since Genesis3D

You should read the article on the eurogamer forum. Those morons in the comments all bitch about the 5% because the moron above said it. Its hilarious. So stupid it hurts. A few years ago (I have followed the site for a while) they all used to bash EA and then the last couple of years they all bash activision and now it seems to be EA's turn again lately with the bf 4 issues.

Sheeple in the truest sense of the word.

Haha, Unity gives out source code to nearly everybody... unless you are an educational institution, then not. Because you cant be milked for money.

We license Unity source code on a per-case and per-title basis via special arrangements made by our business development team. As this can be quite expensive, we do not generally license source code to smaller operations, educational institutions, nor to companies in countries which do not have adequate legal intellectual property protection.
yeah right - that is almost the same as putting the entire source on github.

I guess they'll be happy as this spark in the indie scene (not just UE4, but also other players moving along) could increase the number of games they can take a whopping 30% from when distributing

The engine is not their money maker and apparently UE4 and Unity are both eager to provide for the Steambox/Linux. So I dont expect much to happen in regards to the Steam engine

I like the idea of the DIY craze hitting games.

As much as I love the Unreal Engine, the performance requirements of the editor toolset are sadly far beyond the specs of my laptop, so no evolution to UE 4 in the forseeable future

Back to topic: that's an awesome move, however because of its performance requirements and ultra high quality it might not suit the Indie market, which has always focussed more on the gameplay than on triple A ultra realistic gfx. Nevertheless, the Indie market is by far the most creative, so let's see what Indie studios come up with over the next few years I am already looking forward to the Indie UE4 games.

Weeeellll... same can be said about UE3. And there are lots of indy games utilizing it or at least the free UDK version, so... not sure why they would drop that opportunity.

It could just be a clever trick to get ahead of the sales curve. Pc gamers are geeks inherently and some of us are quite wealthy ones too.

I guess putting this out might shift more units and see people upgrading over the next few years to new kit that can run these requirements comfortably. There will always be a portion of the market who will splash out the money if they see the tangible benefits.

As for Indy producers... I don't know much about them but I would guess even amongst the hobbyist players there is some money floating around.

I can imagine there will be some people rubbing their hands at this.
