View Full Version : [OT] I'm getting old....

I was looking at my left shoulder, no particular reason, just poking at a small scab. But then I looked at my right one and I couldn't focus properly on it.

A few checks later and it appears my right eye can't focus as close as the left, which is wierd because it's my dominant eye (right handed too).

Maybe it's because I use it more...

Time for an eye test, never hand one at an opticians before..

DJ is scared....

I've been wearing glasses since i was 8. Trust me, all they do at an opticians is put some crazy glasses on your face and change the lenses in each eye hole, asking "which one is clearer, 1 or 2?" For about 20 mins.

Bonus if its a hot lady, 'cause they get REALLY close to your face you swear they're about to kiss you.

Have you seen "The Jerk"?

dj, it is probably caused by looking into a computer screen.

Sometimes the porn gets a little blurry.

LOL. Seriously DJ, the absolute worst part of the optician is when they shine a light into your eyes. Aside from that, the dentist is way more scary (i suppose the drill adds to that somewhat).

I'm only scared of what they might tell me, not what they do. I really don't want to be loosing my sight at 24.

I rather go to an optician other than a dentist. The dentist is prabally the worst place to be. But pray that you get a hot one and I have been wearing glasses sence I was 7.

you can always get contact lenses.

zii
15-05-07, 11:06
Or have laser surgery. Have you got a Creed?

If you dislike the idea of surgery then there is a nicer way available in Britain.
If your eyes have less than 2.5, then you can permanently correct the sight by using contact lences. These lences are worn continuously for some months. They act by gently adjusting the eyes back to the correct shape. If you wish for more details then PM me because my optition sells this service, and ought to be able to tell you more about it, or tell you where your local one is. I do not think that this technique is available on the NHS.

Wouldn't it be great if everyone had to wear those crazy specs they use for the testing.

For me the freakiest part is where she shines a big fat light right in my eye which makes the pupil go super-wide, after which she proceeds to practically climb right inside it while trying to check my retina or something.

Cool people wear sunglasses. :)

What scares me personally more than my sight getting worse slowly (wearing glasses since i'm 16, until now i only need them when i'm at the movies or driving) is that i'm starting to prefer a quiet night at home with a glass of wine and a good movie a lot more than a party and the chance to get laid.

And more than 2 parties a week? No chance. At least not if i haven't got another 2 days to recover.

The worst parts not the bright light they use to check the back of your eye its that stupid machine that blows high pressure air into your eye to check its health, man i hate that thing.

P.S the bill they give you for your new glasses is one hell of a shock aswell

i used to wear glasses but seems my eye corrected itself due to my very young age at that time....now i have 20/20 vision
So all i say is get urself checked and maybe others too, who play heavily on here or even in front of a screen alot, and if u need to wear glasses then wear them u wouldnt want ur eyesight to get worse.

So Just wear glasses if u need them or contacts and always play NC in a well lit room and tbh, ppl should be having X amount of minutes of break from nc every so often.

Just get urself checked and dont leave it till its to late!

teehee Given the subject, and the starting off with a story about your shoulder, I totally thought this was going somewhere else, i.e. "zomg I have hairy shoulders and back!"

You're far from old, ya whippersnapper. I bet more of your vision problems come from playing video games and less from being old :P Ooh that sounded overly mothering.

When I saw an optician 10 years ago, cause my right eye "was" fucked up, she says « don't worry little dude, this is only a '18 years old myopia', just use those 79.95$ glasses when driving or going to the cinema and you'll be fine soon ».

Well I'm still waiting for things to fix by themselves... and no, I will never be a green beret sniper cause my dominant is the right one too. Won't be able to read a pannel above 30 mph on a highway either o_O

Video games and computers indeed. Let's hope eye implants are out soon.

edit : now I do understand your recent avatar change hrhr >_<

As long as it's you ;)

@DJ: Not to scare you away or anything, but I saw this thing on tv the other day, where this thing came out of the thing infront of the eye of the person that was at the optician thingy, and it blew air into his eye... it looked like it hurt.

Personally I hope I never get to that, I have very sensitive eyes, when it comes to touchy feely, blowy airy thingy into it.

A way you can play around with your eye thingy using your mind, is by closing the eye you can focus on, and try to navigate your depth perception with the "bad" eye, that way you force the eye to see everything.

According to more and more scientists, playing computer games is actually better for your eyes, for the exact same reason as the above mentioned "test".

Because if you play games like counterstrike, neocron or stuff like that, you are forced to pay attention to all those tiny people coming at you from all over, and all that, so you through pvping, force your eyes to notice everything, keep track of everything, faster than normal people, which would give you a benefit in many other aspects of your life, like driving, hunting, checking out chicks and chickens.

So a theory of mine, is that you have in fact not used your "bad" eye too much, but instead used your "good eye" too much, or looked at the monitor or something else, from a slight angle, which would cause one of your eyes to be at a more optimal range and angle of sight than the "bad" one, which would make it the dominant, no matter what the rest of your body says.

The air being blown into your eye doesnt hurt, it tickles! Its to test for hypoglaucimia or something (spelt wrong), so its worth getting.

I had contact lenses once, sat down watching TV, or reading a book, or doing something, and it came apart in my eye, quite painful, very eye watering.

Worst part about contacts, where they use a toothpick to roll your eyelid up, or when the optician puts them into your eye, or spending an hour trying to get one in, then finding your eye is so sore you got to take it out, so spending an hour trying to take it out

Laser treatment looks good, they cut open your eye with a laser, so that when it heals it corrects the fault, i'ma stick with being half blind though, but they were right, you do go blind!

And no DJ, you aint getting old, I'm 31 on Monday you wee youngster :p

The worst part with contact lenses is getting home early morning after one hell of a drunken night, staggering to the bathroom and spending 20 mins or more trying to get that one contact lense out not realising the bloody thing fell out hours ago. Certainly irritates your eye.

You could be like Beethoven, only instead of being a legendary composer, you just played a videogame for a really long time. Maybe you could get your own npc.

Bullshit. Or totally off topic remark at least.

Potentially increasing brain capabilities on processing visual data has absolutely nothing to do with the physical damages you take from spending half-a-life staring at dumb screens.

No need to be a scientist to admit it, that's just common sense.

DJ's just an old one-eyed cunt and you're on the same highway to hell, just deal with it fool.

There are issues with computers (PCs that is) in a similar manner to watching telly in a dark room.

Though in a dark room the total amount of light entering the eye is lower, this fools the iris into opening further. This means that the amount of light being focussed on the focal point of the retina is a lot higher, which leads to damage to the cones in that region.

You generally spend time at a computer sitting much closer to the screen meaning your eye's are exposed to a lot more light.

But some visual defects are neural in nature....

As Zen said, it's in the mind, the processing of information in a manner relevant to the task. Training your brain to use different/more of/interpret differently the vast amounts of data your eyes collect (most of which is discarded).

On a purely physical level it's generally a bad thing regarding damage to the retina or focussing muscles.

hmm, well, the theory works for me.

i've approximately spend about 9-10 hours per day infront of a computer for the last 12 years, and i still have flawless vision.

How?
Why?

Because I shake on my hands, so I can't draw pretty without computer tools, and my handwriting is horrible.

It's easier to edit things you type, and I work with computers, and I play on them.

So when I draw pictures, write novels and poetry, chat, code websites, play games or work, I'm sitting at a computer.

I have had a bit of a lisp ever since I had a spitstone removed from a spitduct under my tongue, which is really annoying. So I generally prefer writing, to talking. But also because, I feel it's easier to be honest in writing, than in speech.

And a computer is a wonderful tool, you can do so many things with it.

And the majority of people I know in real life, are horrible people with no respect for anything or anyone but themselves and I find that type of behavior very sad.

I may be a nerd, I may not be a supermodel, I may not be so many other things.

But I'm just happy that I'm not like so many others.

I would rather be me as I am, than be someone who's only popular because they make other people feel bad.

I don't care about fashion, or style, or crap like that.

Because it's just utter bullshit, if the only way a person can feel special, is by buying something, wearing something, being something that others buy, wear, say and do. Then I truly pity them.

I'm me, because I've chosen and still choose to be me, and I am me, on my principles, my mentality, and my opinions.

I can actually add a little story to that.

I haven't gotten the jobs I applied for, because I've chosen to have long hair, because I've chosen to rather be good at what I do, than think about what others think of me.

And I get complimented for my work, and I get appreciation for helping the others, and my boss says that to me too.

But the reason I don't get a job, even though I do all that I am asked to do, and then some, is because she doesn't think I'm social enough in my spare time.

And in my opinion, my spare time is none of her business, my social activities are none of her business, not to mention she has absolutely no idea what I do. She bases her assumptions on a stereotype derived from her image of what the life is, of someone who prefers to enjoy delicious food, and computer games, instead of a life of eating crackers, and eating low-cal salad and drinking water.

If she wants to do that, fine let her, it's her decision, but I'd rather live my life, enjoy my life, however short it may be, than miss out on all the good things, just because someone else says it's good for you.

But no way in any lifetime, or any other timespan, will I have someone force their personal way of life on me.

Everyone wants to be someone else, even I want to be someone else sometimes, but it won't change a thing.

Everyone has problems, even those that try to hide it.

No matter who you are, what you do, what you think, say, wear or how you act, is going to let you live problemfree.

So if you think you are special, just because you have the newest outfit the same second it becomes in fashion, or know THE in-word as one of the first in the world... Think again. If you are acting like someone else. You are not special.

Want to be special? ... just be yourself.

I'm different, and I am damn proud of it.

Endnote:

@Karandas, please don't think this is directed at you in any way, it honestly isn't. It just took it's offspring in your questions and evolved in my mind. I quoted you because it was what initiated my inner monoloque.

Good post, in fact a great deal of it applies to me too, only my ambitions and and opinions differ from yours in many respects.

I used to play too many games myself, I got forced out of that by unfortunate circumstances and from a detached viewpoint I could see clearly what I wanted to do and what I'd have to do and give up to get there.

I understand why you choose that now, even if I wouldn't choose that myself. Oh and I don't have long hair either, its too damn thick.
