[OT] Building a new comp, need help

Now that I have gainful employment, I've decided that my hopeless excuse for a machine needs to be replaced.

Unfortunately the last time I built a comp was back when I started university; around 12 years ago. I have no intention of getting a pre-made box, but I am completely out of the loop when it comes to components (the last comp had 512 of 1st gen DDR, half of which is in the machine I am using right now).

I have the case, PSU (though I will probably need a new one), HDD, drives and peripherals. All I need is mobo, CPU, RAM and GFX card.

Looking to spend �500 to �750, but not sure where to spend it, if you know what I mean.

I'm still an AMD type person (though open to suggestions).

Well as for the AMD thing recently it seems AMD is more budget while nvidia is the high end stuff, so that depends on if you a cheap computer or a good one. In the UK I used chillblast for mine though they prebuild them but you can modify them so it could give you an idea of the parts and what not that you might want to get from somewhere else http://www.chillblast.com/ .

Best I can get for the budget really. What I'm not sure about is if I should focus on the CPU, Mobo or GFX. I'm mainly interested in graphics performance for gaming and video editing.

GTX 770 with Intel Core i5 4670K with something Z87 chipset (Gigabyte GA-Z87P-D3 for example) and a 256GB SSD (crucial m4 or something else) and ofcourse a case and shit to your liking and psu.

Should get around 750 ish

well id say stretch it by like 50 quid or do so later and get one of those cpu watercooling integrated kits. i got that on my i5-3540K and it's boosting to 4.5ghz and even more importantly it's quiet as a churchmouse near my case now. and a SSD for your OS and Neocron, if you're using a regular hdd right now you wont believe how fast you'll be playing from hitting the power button.

CPU Cooling - if you don't want to go for water cooling, stick one of these on your CPU - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...701&catid=2330 Always found them to be silent, and they look impressive as well.

As for SSD's I have my OS and apps on a SSD, but my games are on a traditional HD. A SSD isn't going to improve anyone's PvP skills around here!

P.S. Don't forget to get a 64bit OS

yeah, sadly AMD is out of the loop now.
Britney brought a valid issue, you will need cooling for that cpu. Integrated WC is worst of both worlds, imho. I'd get a Thermalright Macho, it's like Thermalright for the people : )

But if you're building a Cron (or work) oriented machine, then uber cheap Pentium G860+any 1155 mobo+ some used 4yr old nvidia will be more than enough for like 1/5 the price. Saved money put into SSD and that will make both Windows and Cron fly, unlike CPU and GPU which will make no difference.

Btw, isn't GTX770 "just" renamed GTX680?

In it's base it's a 680 but with slightly higher clock (theres a msi card with even higher clock) could also go for a HD 7970 GHz edition.

I really like my cheap integrated water cooling (Antec H2o 620) for the price, keeps things way cool even on overlclock (maybe not as good as the "best" air coolers but those will cost more. But if you don't plan on clocking the i5 up for now you can just use the stock cooler and save some cash.

a SSD i would again really recommend.

I quickly gathered that the one in the box at the moment won't be up to scratch, the one mentioned in the last post is this one, 600W, 80+. The modular version is a fiver more but probably worth it.

I don't plan to overclock at this stage, I haven't done any of that for again around ten years.

On the recommendation from a friend, I've been looking at novatech. Are they any good/cheap or are most places about the same?

I've noticed that the i5 CPUs I'm looking at have Integrated Graphics (2500, 4000 or 4600 generally). What does this mean and is it of similar importance to the other specs?

If you get it really cheap, it's definitely worth it, but from what I see now it's sold for about �50 - nearly twice the price of some pretty awesome heatpipe towers.
One of the greatest advantages of WC is the ability to spread heat from small CPU on a huge surface, like 3x 120mm fans. H2O have same radiator surface (1x 120mm fan) as any reasonable tower - so the only advantage of WC left is flexible pipes with ability to reposition. It's just sad to see all that potential wasted.
But I saw H2O versions with larger radiator, sadly price was not proportional (about �100!).

Yeah, SSD should reduce zone loading time, so it actually might be an advantage in PvP : D

nah, what modular usually means is that in 2 years all extra cables will be lost and when you'll want to add smth then, you'll have to get new PSU because of no free cables left : P

Think of it as onboard graphics (just on cpu instead of board). If you plug a real card it won't be used. And probably most OC-oriented boards don't have the monitor socket anyway.

The most important spec of an i5 is "K" or non-"K". "K" means unlocked multiplier so it can overclock. All normal modern Intels don't overclock AT ALL.
Overclocking today is simpler than leveling a droner - you just tell it how fast you want it and off it goes. Or it doesn't, so it reverts to factory and you can try smth else.
