    Default [OT] media storage?

So my media player packed up I have a few movies, pictures etc. I had it attached to the tv and used for family photos etc. the tv (Panasonic) is also capable if recording to it directly.

people have mentioned going for a nas drive of some sort, apparently can stream direct to tv like media player. Drives that self backup so won't loose all my stuff again!

any ideas ideally less than €250-300?

i am no techie, surfing the net is not encouraging as half the terminology is alien to me!! Hopefully you great guys or girls can translate for me

Well on a more serious note can't you just buy a portable hard drive and plug that into your tv via usb?

I thought that was the way to do it these days or am I also behind the times?

hmm, isn't it easier just to get a hdmi cable and hook ur tv up to ur pc, a good media software with a wireless keyboard/mouse and u have everything u want? that's what I use. My experience is that media players like that are either a pain to use properly, or it's too much of a pain to copy stuff to anyway. I have all the stuff I wanna watch on my tv, why mess with a middleman.

Now, now, lads! I thought you was an informed bunch? ;p

I have flush wall mounted 60" Panasonic smart tv, no way plugging my crappy computer into it! Looking for a permanent solution without compromising the aesthetics of my awesome home cinema...

The tv has wireless capability and someone mentioned nas drives can play media and output wirelessly for the tv to pick up, sounded like a good idea. Also it self backs up apparently? I don't want to loose kids photos from all their years growing up, so it's not just a media player although I can display photos on tv for their granny when she comes over

What? Your TV has no possibilty to connect via HDMI to Computer, but it can connect to your WLAN? Panasonic is awesome

Hm what about using cloud-based services like DropBox, Apple iCloud, Google and so on? Easy to use and most of them give you 5gb for free and if you need more space you can switch to pro-version. In most cases your data is save and available everywhere with internet access.

If you want it clean and safe and at your home then a NAS System might be what you want. It stores and some machines backup your data automatically, stream your data to the TV etc. Access to your files is also possible via tablet and smartphone if the machine supports this. You can even grant access to your friends if you want.

But in your case, your priority is to save data (photos, movies etc. from your family). For this your NAS need a so called Raid Level 1. This means there must be 2 harddrives (1 storage, 1 backup) in the shell.

You have to choose how much storage you need (present and future) and how many money your data is worth it (Energy use and noise level might be minor important for you). For example a 2000gb system from Buffalo is available for €289 without shipping (in Germany).

2000gb seems a lot, but if you stores HD movies with 16gb (eg.) of each file...just keep this in mind

I don't know if they ship outside of the USA, but Newegg is running a bunch of "Black Friday" sales on things like that. Most online tech vendors based in the USA will have rather large sales until "Cyber Monday".

You may run into a bunch of stuff that is sold out, but if you can find free shipping you may save some money on storage.
