    Default THN offline - Back online

    If any of you have followed updates on Twitter from @techhaven there was an incident at the data centre where the THN server is hosted. Something happened that caused the server to get very hot, and eventually one of the disks in the RAID1 array failed.

    I wish I could tell you what happened exactly but the data centre hasn't given me many details - except that the air con went offline, and the emergency services were involved. You can speculate all you like what that means. What I do know is the disks reached temperatures of around 63C at one point.

    So while a new replacement disk is obtained and fitted, the THN will remain offline. I will look at temporarily hosting the THN on a VPS solution in the next few days. If anyone knows of any decent UK/EU VPS providers please chuck a link in this thread.

    Edit: P.S. Forgot to mention a important point. All data and files are all backed up and safe.

    I've had to resort to Google cache to continue using the site.

    Just out of curiosity … what are the hosting requirements for the THN?
    PHP Code:
    "Computer voice: Fatal system error in unit 13, gamma sector, cryo recreation phase has been interrupted.";

    //answers
    set 4        "Ok, see you later";
    set 5        "You're boring me, piss off"

    Ok first thing, sorry for the lack of updates.

    However I have good news. The THN is back online.

    The current server is a 4 core CPU with 8gigs of ram, running Debian Squeeze, with Apache, MySQL and PHP 5.5. The THN will run on less as the test server has less resource and it runs quite fine. The part of the THN that usually eats resources is the wiki.

    So basically a good LAMP server with SSH access.

    Now one thing I am looking at in the near future is a new home for the THN - I know a few of you have contacted me about hosting, but I'm not going to rush into changing hosts just yet. Also if you know of any decent VPS/Hosting suppliers available, let me know.

    Edit: Could a mod add "Back online" to the thread title please?

    I bet you could do with a fairly small VPS if you throw Varnish in the mix, given that a vast majority of requests are likely anon and could be cached very effectively.

    Phew!!!
    I missed this page the last days. It was really hard to find important stuff with the wayback machine
    At this point big thanks for the THN.ORG-team. It's the number #1 resource for everthing about NC.

    I don't have experience with Varnish myself, but what you say makes sense. I did have a quick read at lunchtime, and it seems the Stats DB and the upcoming Items DB V2 should talk very nicely to Varnish since Symfony 2 has good support for it. It get's interesting with the rest of the THN though.

    I think Varnish will be a future THN project to think about.
