HL2 Map of Plaza

Well, I haven't gotten much done. I'm fiddling with 2 complicated things right now (and they are only complicated because the documentation for the use of these entities is very sparse and I am working by trial and error). I'm trying to get a good looking particle system for the grav lifts to work, which, isn't too bad now that I have hashed out what *most* of the variables do. And also, I am trying to get the grav lifts themselves to work. Lots of tweaking, but tomorrow I should have them up and running.

Anyway, I am posting what I have so far. You guys tell me if it is starting to look familiar.

very nice reproduction, but I still think you could pretty it up a little by adding more detailing

I've been thinking of learning blender (seeing as I try to at least know most of the open source editors), but atm I need to learn Solidworks

I'm not gonna learn a tool that only has use for modding, as I have no intention of becoming a modder besides doing some occasional project to further my skills and maybe help some people out

nicely modeled Biglines, true that solidworks isn't a great software to make 3d models, but it's very useful to create irl machine +mechanism and its blueprints. Blender has evolved a lot. if you need links for blender ressource pm me.

I need to look at Solidworks and see what it exports to. If it is possible to import it into a program that I have, I will use it, no doubt. Just gotta get it in a format I can open and then re-export.

BTW, that looks awesome. Definitely top notch.

I'm holding off on some detailing until I get more of the level itself roughed in. A lot of the deatils I have added are small, but more like what you would see in RL, such as the handrail in Medicare and beveled edges. Any standard handrails are going to be cylinders instead of rectangles, that sort of thing. As I said before, it isn't my intention to change the archetechture of Neocron drastically. I want to preserve the feel of NC while updating it. I feel like if I change too much, it's gonna turn out to be something completely different. Also, other details are going to be added as I make some props and add them to the game. And, of course, I'm teaching myself different things in the engine as I go, so it'll get better as time goes on.

Love it! map starting to look cooler every time. weapon also looks cool big!

Hey, I checked out Solidworks. It doesn't export to anything that I currently own. At least, none of the extensions listed on their website. I have Milkshape 3D which can import a TON of file extensions, including DirectX and many others.

Looks like Solidworks is a CAD program for engineering? That's cool, very nice, though I have no idea how those skills would translate over to using a modeling program that was designed to produce CGI stuff for games and movies. I don't know if they are the same at all actually. But, if I ever need a real-life laser rifle, I'm coming to you to build it for sure!

If you are thinking of learning Blender, I think it exports the Valve file formats. I'll double check and edit this post in 2 seconds. That might be a better way to get your work to me.

EDIT: Blender has very limited export capability (to Source file extensions anyway). You could do the work on the mesh itself, but someone else using XSI would have to paint the weightmaps, build the skeletons and do the animations for the models. A fully functioning export script has been in the works for over 2 years, but it's not finished as of yet.

I would like to add that XSI isn't just for mods. If you learned how to use the XSI mod tool, you would be learning how to use the full version of XSI, which is used for a lot of stuff, including CGI movies and some CAD applications as well. Just a thought, no big deal. I'm gonna try as hard as I can to use your work and save myself some time. And, of course, give you credit for it!

solidworks can export to stl, which is at least capable of being imported in 3dsmax, c4d and rhino (seeing as solidworks' renderer is not the greatest, lot's of people import it to 3dsmax or cinema 4d for rendering)

and worst case scenario it can be used as a size and dimension reference (it can at least be imported, but cud be that it is too high-poly for source)

I am so impressed with the talent demonstrated in the Post! How you guys have the patience to craft this stuff is beyond me! But i like the looks of it all.

There was a mod in development called Hostile-Planet, created by an ex Neocron player and took his inspiration from there. It got into the Steam News. Was fun testing it, too bad he got hired by splash damage working on Quake Wars so there was no more spare time for him :(. Built on the source engine and even had day/night cycles!

would love to know if neocron even has a chance of being picked up again by reakktor, still has a major place in my heart and i know that the pvp feel and system is one of the best around, the problem is theres too much familiarity between the tiny population, and alot of bending the rules and pushing gamesmanship to the max with multi accounting etc ...

white, go into the map properties in steamsdk, you can set the generic light ambient tone in there so your not relying on placing omni's allover the place to cover all black area's, works well to put the maps default ambient at a really dark grey or blue, and then place omni's with a bit more control

Ah yay! I had to open all week at the store, so I had no time to work on this. Until today, when I had a revelation! And got the particles to behave in like 5 minutes! So, here's a small, yet substantial update that I hope everyone will enjoy.

Of course, after recording and compressing the movie, I realized that I didn't demo the gravlift actually working... but the down one isn't tweaked perfectly yet, so I can hold off until that bit is sorted out.

maybe it looks better if you let the particles spawn from below the floor, since it seems they're a bit slow at the bottom compared to further up?

I'm actually trying to do several things actually. I'm reading a Visual C++ book before bed, learning XSI (again, haven't used it in 2 years) and mapping. So, no you aren't the only one working on weapons models. But, I'm also working on world models too, such as the Gogo and I'm not completely devoted to weapons models at this time.

And, to top things off, my power supply in my main PC got screwed up by the baby, so I won't be able to do anything worthwhile until I get a new one. Hopefully Newegg can get it out before tomorrow evening. Until then, I'm pretty much shot, as all my project files are on that PC. My FTP PC is running, but it doesn't have a high res monitor and I'd have to reset all the programs on that PC.... what a mess.

I'll keep you guys posted on any new progress. Hopefully I can get that other PC where I can use XSI at least, but this week is full with me moving and all.

damn mod tool is a fucking shitty tool, won't import any filetype properly (been exporting with blender, which exports to 3dsmax, maya, etc all fine..)

I've found some tutorials and plugins for blender so I don't need xsi mod tool at all, yay.

Weapons are difficult to do though (at least, they're lots and lots of work), so I'd prefer to start on some props such as gogo, citycom, GR, things like that

might redo the laser rifle model in blender, but not gonna look into exporting viewmodels just yet, but first I'm going to model a gogo and a citycom, see if I can texture them as well, so you can place them around ur maps

What is it you are doing with the blender... Dont stick you fingers in it hurts :D lol only joking but yeah what you doing with the blender program?

this is a blender model, so the poly count is much much lower, but should run far more smoothly in source

(but then again, we're used to NC fps and memory leaks, so we shouldn't really have much problems with people complaining about fps lag :P)

when the model is finished I'll texture it and then see if i can get it ingame
