To prevent third party applications from being installed from IE,
you have to goto Options then click the Privacy tab.
I have mine set to Medium-High, takes care of all that crap.
Download AdAware 6.0 from:

It will remove all the most popular thirdparty apps and spyware
from your computer, i use it daily.
Also http://housecall.trendmicro.com for free online virus scans
and removal.

Ad-aware 6 is particularly good in my opinion. I try to use it daily.
The reason your home page is changing back to that crap unintentional one is probably because a registry key was installed by a webpage / popup / whatever.
Ad-aware will pick this up and report if you have any other spyware or dodgy cookies installed and then let you delete them if you want.
Of course, there are a list of famous programs that always install spyware, unfortunately, as it is nearly nine in the morning and I have been up all night at a LAN party, damned if I know what they are! O_o :rolleyes:

Not everyone has those plus i like to set those to other things like copy etc
Plus that was only an example there are others like opening a new page, goto a root of a page, open link in new window etc. etc.
