From a slightly nihilistic perspective, yes, there's no reason to carry over anything. 'It's only a game.'
Of course, in many respects, it's not 'just a game'.
Insulting or offending someone over the internet is not acceptable because there is a real person at the other end, who is insulted and offended. The anonymity and detachment does not mean it's any different from doing it to their face, it's not a magical world where nothing matters.
In the same way, the time, effort and loyalty invested in something like NC are as real as those spent in any other activity.
Tell even an amateur sportsman that their 'hobby' is pointless, meaningless, a waste of time and 'only a game' and you'll get an angry reply.
Many people have invested considerable time and effort into NC.
If there's a total wipe then, whether or not they 'should' not care in the slightest according to any given reasoning, they more likely will care a great deal, will be angry and that feeling won't be any less real simply because some people think it shouldn't be.
That said, while I might have over half a billion in the bank, dozens of Judges, stacks of rares, techs and items from my time in NC and would be miffed to loose them, I'm only really concerned about a hand-full of items.
