Now i just bought a new computer and its cpu is realy outdated. I just bought a athlon xp 2400+ (2 gigs or somthing) and i realy wanna overclock it. The fan i am looking at i cant seem to find anywhere else and is made for running servers. It fights on socket A type proccesors. Is this fan a good choice, or should i use somthing else? I need some advice on a good, cheap fan for overclocking. (im cheap)

link to proccesor is on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3673&item=3477634789&rd=1).

The newest Thermaltake HSFs really kick ass. Get one. 10+ or higher.

if you are going to be cheap-- dont over clock. you are just asking for a dead cpu or mb or psu or everything. If you are going to overclock-- do it the right way. Buy a strong psu that is recognized by amd (www.amd.com) to support the cpu you are using, buy a nice hsf (www.heatsinkfactory.com). And well-- you can stop there for now if you are just going to overclock the frontside bus.

But against all else-- dont get a 1u cpu fan for anything but a 1u case.

i dont know what 1u means. also, the cpu i have now (duron 1 gig) has a stock fan and aluminum block, but i always run it at 1333 and its fine. and why wouldent any 350 watt power supply work with overclocking? can you please give me some details?

Maybe read my post, bub.

When you overclcok you are going to have to raise the voltage to the cpu (it would be pointless overclocking if you didnt). Therefore it puts a lot of extra strain on the PSU. Take my word...you want a good solid PSU with plenty of headroom...many times PSUs have been known to take most of the hardware with them when they die :) Dont let it happen to you!!

That is a VERY solid performer and is extrmemly quiet too! :D

Sorry glok i was looking up reviews. When i think thermitake, i think they are the brass eagle of cpu cooling. But actualy, from what i read they are actualy realy good for the money.

@ strongsad i never realized any harm could come to my computer from overclocking other then the cpu auto shutting down or somthing. thank you for the warning.

right now i realy dont care how loud it is. my computer sounds like a broken hair dryer anyways and i dont care. I have 5 fans in there right now, 2 home made from old cpu fans  that one you listed for me looks realy amazing. im still looking at reviews. Also can someone pelase tell me what they think of the fan i listed?

Thermaltake was a joke a few years ago, but now they got the best you can get.

No and no.

Firstly it's a Socket 370 Heatsink, not a socket A, despite what's said about most socket 370 heatsinks fitting ok on socket A's, they are still different and there's no point chancing something that might put ANY extra strain on a processor that already generates a shit load of heat.

Secondly that fan only outputs a rated 6.1 CFM which is stupidly low considering the speed at which the fan operates.

Most Athlon XP's want a decent 10~20cfm to stay properly cooled and stable if being overclocked, my recommendation is something like a cheap coolermaster HSF, they are cheap and very reliable, infact you could pickup an OEM set for about half the price of that eGay™ item.

An expensive Antec / Enermax 350watt PSU will be MUCH better than a $20 550watt "Dual fan omg uber sex0r!!" PSU from your local hardware store.

You should always consider Quality over quantity with PSU's, wattage is not overly important until you start running cutting edge technology in your machine.

One more thing.

You want cheap and cheerful, get this one here (http://www.coolermaster.com/index.php?LT=english&Language_s=2&url_place=product&p_serial=CP5-8JDIF-0L&other_title=CP5-8JDIF-0LCPU%20Cooler)

You want something slighty more jazzy and also slightly quieter, get this (http://www.coolermaster.com/index.php?LT=english&Language_s=2&url_place=product&p_serial=ASB-V73&other_title=ASB-V73Aero%207%2B)

Don't go the cheap way...

Go Swiftech Heatsinks, expensive , but ... the best

I think their site is www.swiftnets.com

i would go for a thermalright heatsink with a sunnon or vantec fan (vantec are usually, BUT not always rebranded sunnon's)

im curently running a vantec tornado on a thermalright sk-7, not the most pricey but its keeping my cpu under 40c at full load (thats with a 400mhz oc) sounds like a turbine on full bore tho.

edit : just realised the heatsink your looking at is for 1u rack mounted servers (doh) which means its specifially designed to go in a 1u (1 unit) case, it wont work to good in a desktop case because of the different airflow (sorry about the grammer but its kinda early)

im upgrading my heatsink and case soon, im getting the new version of the Zalman Flower heatsink. apparently it it cools anything and is very quiet.

also looks uber.

IMHO Zalman 7000 Cu is best choice if you don't want to build designed airflow in entire case.

And to all guys recommending sunon fans - sunon is better than nonames, but it's poorest brand of all _brands_. Best is german Papst. Mid-class are Panaflow (Matsushita-Panasonic), maybe Sanyo. Rest is not even worth checking "brand".

he needs a Socket A heatsink, that one is for P4 and Athlon 64 CPUs.

the Socket A CNPS6000-Cu version is the Zalman Flower

see http://www.zalmanusa.com/ for more info

I whole-heartedly recommend using Artic Silver on your new Heatsink.

Seriously... for a few quid that shit is the bomb.

That will work on every AMD socket you could think of... (besides a slot). It will also work with A64 and Intel, so wooo! :) I have it on one of my AthlonXPs so I know it will work. The only prob you may run into is motherboard clearance since it is a very large heatsink.

Also, Dan you are very right. Having a cheap PSU that is rated at 600watts doesnt mean it is solid or quality. Antec/Fortron/Sparkle/PC power&cooling make the best PSUs out there. I recommend this one for being very solid...quiet....and sexy :D

zalman 7000 fits on socket A, but dang, it needs mounting holes in teh mobo : (
but mobos without holes sucks anyway : D

Good choice. I have a Volcano 10+ on my XP2000+ and my idle temps are lower than 40°C with only 2 case fans.
