yeah but the map would constantly be in the corner so when you went to look at it, it would still be in the corner, and you move your focus and its still in the fucking corner!! so you look towards the corner and the corner moves!

IIRC those work by projecting onto a semi-reflective screen in front of the eye (eg the helmet visor). I could be wrong but I know that they were doing it that way since the late 70s with varying degrees of success. Straight onto the eye is a big leap forward.
