Yeah, first UT rocked seriously.
I remember I played it for quite some time. Very good gfx engine (no lag etc) for the time as far as I remember.

I played the UT 2004 demo and I feel that:

-Vehicles are awesome (Vehicular Manslaughter)
-Onslaught rules
-Assault is back w00t!
-But its still just missing something (as Hinch said)

I can't quite grasp what that something is...

I think its safe to say everyone in the UT community thinks UT2k4 is far superior to UT2k3.

I got UT when it came out and I did enjoy it, but then about a month later Quake3 came out and I didnt bother with UT anymore.

Never got UT2003, but I have bought Unreal 2 (I did like single player/co-op Unreal original) and I've bought UT2004 which imo is a great game, a bit too addictive maybe :)

My UT2k4 got stuck in a postal strike so I only got the full game yesterday and played it for a couple of hours.

UT99 was a frame of mind game for me, sometimes I'm confident and I just know I'm going to do well and I grab a shock rifle and a flak canon and own all.

UT2k3 didnt have that feeling, there was just something lacking to the game.

UT2k4 brought back those times when you can do no wrong, you predict very jump dodge and the sucker lands on your rocket, you hit a jump in the scorpian just right and decapitate 3 enemies as you land on their node.

Not that I'm ub3r cause just as often I'll play my average game and enjoy it without the leetness or suck ass completely and keep killing myself :)

I pretty much agree with previous posters.

UT2K3 < UT2K4 < UT

UT2K4 is pretty damn good, but it somehow doesn't have that indefinable "edge" UT Classic did.

Maybe it's just me that's jaded and I've grown too familiar with FPS in general.
I found UT to be pretty much perfect, in terms of pure FPS gameplay ... where do you go from there ?

UT Classic weapon placement was better.

But IMO the best weapons ever were, yes you got it! DUKE NUKEM 3D!!! :)

I have to agree with Kurai I used to play it at lunch on the office lan and it was so finely tuned, everything so perfectly balanced that I didnt see how they could beat it. I thkn thats where UT2k3 failed, they should of given UT a major graphical boost and then listened to the community instead they changed the gameplay and I felt like I was playing UT Arena, a bastard son of Quake.

UT2k4 has brought some of the goodness back but its the modifications that'll interest me :)

Droms of course, and Parashock :P

Been playin UT2k4 Demo, some twat was cheatin, every shot a headshot, all you had to do was get into sight and, boom, dead, ruined the game. Now I gotta go buy the full DVD version, I hate spending money :(

Oh, the original, Unreal, kicked ass, just Unreal, no T or anything, had a singleplayer story, and MP kickass stuff, rawr.

Is that the Duke Nukem with the freezer gun and the shrinking gun?

UT2003 sucked, the sniper rifle was shit, the feel was all wrong, the character models sucked and it was mostly just to show off the engine and the levels. UT was functional fun, which I think is why tons of people still play it. Even Epic acknowledge a lot of people were put off by UT2k3.

Loved UT
UT2003 had good bits, double domination is cool. Didn't like the lightening gun.
UT2004 is better, keeps the best bits and improves on them. Seems slightly faster paced than 2003. Engine runs smoother but with better graphics. Still don't like the lightening gun.
Hated Q3. Was a 1 weapon game. All UTs have had better balanced weapons, imo.

And Chaos is coming to UT2004. I love fire mines :)

I loved UT. UT2003 was nice, but I was put off by the stupid announcer voice, lack of a real sniper rifle and such. The maps were pretty nice, but alas, DM-Crane, DM-Morpheus and DM-Phobos are still my favs. Ended up buying UT2003 when it was marked down to $20. Haven't bought UT2004 yet, probably won't for a while but I've been playing the Onslaught Demo map a lot. UT2004 is without a doubt better than UT2003. Can't really say if its better than the original or not since I haven't played the full game yet (2004).

Yes, and the pipe bombs and trip mines.
That's the first ever game i played on a lan...

I'd rather play the old Unreal Tournament than Unreal Tournament 2003 and 2004.

The old one just pwnz all.

UT2003's biggest problem for me was the weapons simply weren't as fun. The lightning gun gave a sniper's position away with ease, the rocket launcher sucked compared to the eightball, the ASMD rifle wasn't as good, pistols were better than the assault rifle for a starting weapon, etc. Only weapons that remained fun were the flak cannon and biorifle.

/me isn't a dead drom.

I liked UT.. didn't like UT2k3.. probably the same as I don't like QIII or Half-life. I prefered Duke 3D over Quake as I found Quake too bland with the dull colour scheme the game used. Loved Wolf 3D, and RTCW. Currently I spend alot of my free time either in UT2004 or C&C Generals Zero Hour, with the odd run through Call of Duty.

UT2k4 is what UT 2k3 should have been when it was released imo, vehicles were promised in 2k3 but the best we got was the crappy demo map with one, besides that it was just a graphical update.

the original is by far the best, the others just didnt have that same franticness and all out pure action.

Anyone who played UT Classic know why its the best UT ever :)

I used to run a UT server that had a collection of the best 20 maps made and the Zark's Assault Rifle mod. Man, did that game rock!

I'll have to give UT2004 a whirl. I had given up on the franchise after I wasted $50 on the crap that was UT2003 and took part in that stupid XMP beta.
