Those guys are actually trying to make a real mech. Seems a ways off, if what I'm seeing is right (scant and rather simplistic atm, though)

Whoa.... thats well cool. I wonder how they are getting funded... Because this sort of equipment http://www.mechaps.com/mps/mcf1/bilder/scissorlift_up.jpg can't come cheap.

Note the DISTINCT lack of any actual photos of real engineering R&D.

No notes on how they plan to make a full sized bipedal vehicle and the balancing system they plan to use.

I did mention that the info was scant and simplistic, only some CAD drawings.

The torso section will be housed in a light weight metal sheath with visual ports of Lexan glass. This configuration will be suitable for stopping small arms fire and heavy collisions as expected in an industrial or commercial application.
Small arms fire expected in an industrial or commercial application?

well, considering its a prototype...

flying debris from moving around and skinning buildings or insurance against falling down flat on face as in "heavy collisions as expected in an industrial or commercial application"

Yeah that makes sense, I understand that. It's the small arms fire part that gets me.

well, yeah, if you extend the situation to military use, small arms fire is exactly like the flying debris you'd get from testing and commercial use.

That's military use though. Not commercial and industrial use. ;)

This could end up as one of two things:

1) Really fucking cool, with mechs actually starting to be used in industrial and military uses.

2) A large metal statue that falls over when you press the "Forward" button, and fires two firework rockets out of its arms.

2) A large metal statue that falls over when you press the "Forward" button, and fires two firework rockets out of its arms. Reminded me of the 2nd episode of Neon Genesis Evangelion...

Well you never know, any revolting workers could be delt with quickly with a mech on scene ;) red faction style.

And we can all get our own commercial hoverbot if that ever comes out that is :)

actually i thank the japanese are closer to completing the task at hand

the one that i have seen is a mini backhoe with the bucket and arm removed

with a set of hydraulic arms mounted up high with the pilot seated in awindowed cockpit between the arms

the arms very much resemble those of the loader mech from alien 2

and it runs on tracks not legs , and is supposedly going into production for debris clearing in the event of earthquakes and other natural disasters in which heavy lifting from a smaller more mobile and more articulating machine would be needed........basically a bobcat wit arms if your from the U.S.

i swear they showed it in either FHM or maxim last month i believe

When it is a Battle Tech Meck then I'll call it a Mech.

The BT Mechs seem like they would work in real life, why don't they just copy them?

In reality mechs are not needed. other wise they would actualy be made by now.
