It is a damn shame, but it's just the way it is. It's quite easy to mug people in, the muggers always pray on the easy targets.

I've been mugged twice myself, both times partly my fault for being completely off my face. The second time I had a knife put against my throat (having learned to get the hell out of there on the first time).

There have always been criminals, I doubt that has changed very much over the years, maybe there are a few more robbings for drug addictions rather than basic survival in ye olden days.
