Heyo,

That is the first place that came to my mind thinking about where i'd find english students.

I have the following problem. I am searching for an university to graduate in information & telecommunication technologies or however that is named in the UK.

Since i'm open minded about where to study im currently searching within my homecountry germany and otherslike the UK (Because it is part of the EU an imigration would be easy). But the information i was able to google for is quite complex to understand if you dont know the english school system.

So my question to the UK buddies:

What qualifications do i need to study in the UK, is there a special organization that handles the applies to universities like here (ZVS) or can you apply direct to an university?

What university can you recommend ?

Thanks
MightyMax

[Edit] More specifically http://www.ucas.com/studyuk/index.html will likely interest you.

I want to study something that is called "theoret. Informatik" in germany. Thats basically the dry stuff behind computers. principles of algorythmic (word?) you know the very theoretic stuff behind it all. Math in its best form :p

I'm off to Sheffield Hallam University this year, as a mature student O_o (lol @ mature ;) - Im a 21 year old boy).....

Hallam does a nice telecomms course - i just checked my prospectus.

Anyway, other Uni's i visited that took my fancy were:

-Bristol
-Durham
-Sheffield Uni (not Hallam)
-Huddersfield - this is a good fall back as ANYONE can get in.
Its a very nice part of the country (imo :p)

Oxford + Cambridge are hands down the number 1 and number 2 Uni's, but you REALLY have to impress to get in there ;)

IMO, A Uni is a Uni, and a degree is a degree. If you're gonna pass your course, you are gonna pass it regardless of where you study.

Check out the area you would prefer to live in, then apply there.
Thats prob the best advice i could give.

I love sheffield - cheap to live, Meadowhall (2nd largest retail outlet in the UK), music for all tastes, Rave clubs (not my thing), Rock clubs (definately my thing)...

4 cinemas, Ice skating, Horse racing, dog racing, casinos, bowling alleys, 2 x pro football teams all within about 2 or 3 miles of centre...

We got it all baby :D

All the good UK Universitys will list their entrance requirements on their website. They are generally very flexible for people who haven't come through the UK school system (Foreign/Mature students).

I don't know much about English Uni's, but in Scotland I'd recommend Edinburgh & Glasgow (I went to Edinburgh so I'm a bit biased :)). St. Andrews is a very good Uni as well, but it's a long way from civilisation :D

Here (http://www-maths.mcs.st-andrews.ac.uk/topunilist.html) is a list of the top 100 Uni's in the UK (compiled by the Times newspaper). I'm not sure if that's this years, but it doesn't change much year on year. I hope that helps.

Thats where I went...until I got run over and had to drop out but thats a diff story. Yeah Huddersfield WILL let anyone in but imho they do their stuff and do it wel, esp. when it comes to computing (I did software engineering). Just dont choose the Uni accomodation, get a house or one of the privately rented flats instead as the costs for uni flats are astronomical (£63 a week while I was there).

edit:- Ignore anything in The Times it can be a bit elitist

Try extremely elitist :)

But also vaguely accurate. They put Loughborough very high and that's hardly a bastion of civilised culture...trust me, I know, I had to live there for 5 months. The mental scaring is still with me.

Use the list as a starting point for further investigation rather than a gospel truth :)

The other guitarist in my band goes to Hudders Uni.

He is studying Higher English Language, but he has lived in student accomodation for past 4 years.
Infact, im there every week or so, so i probably ran into ya if u lived around Firth Point, or went to the student union ;)

My union bar got vandalised again ... nearly as logical as striking against fees .. seeing as you waste about 90 quid for not going in for the day o_O

Thanks for the replys. Ive been busy today, but i have now something to start off from.

As it looks for me now ive the right qualifications. 13 years of school (with continously raising diff. :D ) that was passed with 65.6% (German Abitur with mark 2.26)

And an qualification equal to an bachelor with a missing year as an "Informatikkaufmann" (3 year combined school/job training) which i passed with 83% in the school-part.

Anyhow, i gonna mail some of the unis i got now. If that is good enough.

Thanks
MightyMax
