Greetings.

(I actually expected a bow gesture there. From what avatar or from where I don't know. Damn this NeoCrack o_O)

So... I'm going to buy a new GFX card.
What I want, is teh sex. I don't care if it costs $500, me wants it.

Basically I'm leveling between Radeon 9800XT 256MB and Geforce 5950 Ultra 256MB.

I'm planning to choose between the following:

Powercolor Radeon 9800XT 256MB DDR 410/730MHz AGP8X DVI-I Tv-Out Retail
Asus Ati Radeon 9800xt Tv-out Dvi 256mb
Connect3d Radeon 9800xt 256mb Ddr Agp Tv-out Dvi
Creative Ati 9800 Xt 256mb Retail
Sapphire Radeon 9800XT/AGP 256MB DDR DVI TVo Retail

Gainward Fx5950ultra 256mb U/1800 Xp
Leadtek WF FX5950Ultra 256MB MYVIVO Retail
Creative 3D Blaster GeForceFX 5900 Ultra 256MB AGP8X DVI-I TV-out Retail
ASUS GeForceFX 5900 Ultra 256MB DDR AGP8X DVI-I TV-out Retail

What do you think? Did I leave some brand out that is better?
nVidia or ATI?

Thanks :)

EDIT: I've always used nVidia btw. Have a Leadtek GF3 now, and it's really good (for that level)...

hmm man i got the same prob imo... thinking about ati 9800 ( pro or xt ..whatever ) 128 mb or gf fx 5900 xt

cant decide =(

Yeah, it's problem :p

If it's going to be a GF, I'm quite sure I'll pick Gainward or Leadtek, since they've received very good reviews (in the past at least). I have no clue on the Radeon part really...

Now is probably the worst time in the last few years to splash out for the VERY top end of home graphics cards.

To put it simply, choose either a 5700ultra/5800ultra on the geforce side, or a radeon 9800 pro(NOT XT) on the ATI side.

They are both not quite as good as the XT/5900ultra, but the difference saved in price is amazing.

Then, in 2 or 3 months, buy the top-end of the new line.

@Celt
Yeah, the thought have crossed my mind :p

And yikes! The Leadtek 5950 does seems to perform very well http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.html?i=1955&p=22
Also, check out the halo and the other overall comparisons :)

Excellent.

Omg, who am I kidding... I want the Leadtek 5950... WE WANTS!!!!

Well, for any other interested, check out the link in my previous post. Very good comparison tables :)

Get Leadtek. Nuff said.

They Kick ass, and the custom drivers are superb.

my card : http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?LEA-FX59XT

A350XT.

the 5950 you had there (and on that etst site thingy) is the A380.

is that card better than a 128 mb ati radeon 9800 ?
how much fps you`re gettin in op fights / p1 etc ?

tell meeee :)

Elric

well, since i havent upgraded my processor, FPS is pretty much the same.

Things seemed to be more stable though, even with more particle effects goin off, it wouldnt drop lower than about 20fps, where before it used to plummet to about 12 - 15.

Also, the actual graphic quality of NC has improved greatly since putting the new card in. NC looks like it did with my GF4 with full on antialiasing and anistropic filtering but without getting the hit on FPS that it used to. And thats without even turning AA / ASF on.

NC used to be "blurred" and only be bale to see detail when getting very close to objects. Now you I can even make out facial features and texture details from a good distance. Does anyone actually realise how damned good the PE PA looks and DOY Bots?

A better comparison would be the Aquamark3 bench test i ran. full AA / AF, was getting 25 - 50fps solid, 30,000 ish marks.

FFXI benchmark was running at almost constant 48fps (AA/AF off though).

kickass card and pretty cheap too considering.

hell, Even the Farcry demo runs damned sweet now. Mostly medium details, some at high, and getting a good 30 - 40 fps.

:edit:

In comparison to the 9800 it runs better. But, if you switch on AA / AF then the ATI's handle that better.

Try changing the filtering mode in the games. Switch it to either Tri-linear filtering or Anistropic Filtering. Either that or up the screen resolution. That'll probably help.

The only nvidia worth buying is the FX5950 but get this you can buy a 256 meg 5900 and soft mod it to a 5950 easy as pie.

Basiclly the Radeon 9800 family fully support DirectX9 at the hardware level (where as the 5950 burns GPU cycles software supportign some features) and all the next gen games that are coming out soon run on DX9.

Get a Radeon 9800XT 256meg and you will have the best gfx card on the market to date.

However DO NOT BUY POWERCOLOUR they suck balls.

The next line of cards from both companies are coming out soon... I'd advise against making a huge purchase now, why not a huge purchase in a couple months? You can't hold out?

Damn that was a heavy read. Bloody good stuff. After playing about with my Card (I must admit, Ive overclocked it a litte :p) it looks to be accurate to those tables n tests.

I didnt realise how much better 9800's were. But then, the 9800 i was looking at to buy instead was £110 more expensive too....

I stick with my choice though and Im happy with it still :)

yep, atis get higher marks BUT they have sloppy drivers, nvidia drivers make short work of ati catalyst, in terms of display experience, graphics glitches are way more common with ati cards, so id go for a 5950 ultra, club3d cards re well known for their high price/quality marks

El_MUERkO
18-03-04, 16:37
Vampire I dont know how current you are with ATIs drivers, I havent had any graphical glitches with any games in ages and I have alot of my HDs.

Not only that but HL2 runs better on the ATI, so says Valve, Doom 3 adds may say nvidia cards give you the best performance but then ID used 9800XTs to display doom 3 recently.

Every DX9 based game coming out in the next while will run better on 9800s thanks to hardware support of all the new features rather than software and guess what... BDoY is updating the GFX engine to DX9.

ATi drivers are fine now. People yelling about bad Radeon drivers are about 6 months behind.

I always had nVidia, now went to 9800XT and I'll *never* go back.

Apart from the extra FPS (which I dont care for that much), the display *quality* is uber.

PS. I got the Asus brand.

just got an asus radeon 9600xt OC'd to 550 core 700 mem

the ONLY gfx errors i've had are in NC, i've got 4x AA and 8x AF and ut2k4 @ 1024x768 max detail full server doesn't slow down one bit and looks beautiful :P

the AA also makes NC look very crisp no nasty jaggy edges at all

I'm sorry, but the question that needs to be asked, is: Do you have the slightest clue what you are talking about?

Hippieman

No he does not I believe. That "ATI DRIVERS SUXX0RS" bit is old. This card runs just fine and the drivers havent caused any problems, hell I think their better then nVidia. The only problem I have on ANY programs is in Neocron. Small thing though, in plaza 1 it screws up every 20-30 minutes idling there and causes the PSI shop to spew out brown thingies. Nothing a alt+tab wont fix.

Oh and I suggest getting a 128MB Radeon 9800 Pro and oc'in it to XT speeds. Lot cheaper.

Samhain
19-03-04, 18:23
ATi is faster and better looking and usually cheaper. Oh no!

[edit]

And my 9500 non-pro has done me right for as long as I can remember. I softmod it to 9700 and then right now it's at 382MHz core (up from 275 stock) and 600MHz memory (up from 540 stock) and it runs everything I throw at it.

Phunqe, matey... if you go highend it doesnt matter...

Radeon 9800 XT or GeForce FX 5950 Ultra... doesnt matter... they are both really great, i have the ASUS V9980 card (FX 5950 ultra) btw, and its really nice. Get like 500 FPS in sewers with VSYNC off, but i dont like that tho... otherwise its usually stable 85 fps (my monitor refreshrate) - stable is what you want in FPS games... and around 80 is fine.

If you do want to buy the best, go ahead. Dont wait. You can always wait for the next step, but thats pretty much stupid in my oppinion. There will always be a new card on the horizon anyway. And with PCI express 'on the horizon'... I mean if you want to keep waiting for the next big thing you can wait until you grow old and die.

What it boils down to in the end is your personal preferance. I bought nVidia because i had an old GF2 GTS, but im sure if i had an ATI card before, I'd have gone for the R9800 XT. Again, the differences are marginal. Personal taste, thats all... :)

(but if you REALLY go into detail, it seems the R9800 XT will be the better choice. R9800 stays an inch ahead of GF 5950 ultra in most tests, but the difference is usually minimal)

oh and a link... should be pretty much mandatory for all people to have if they are wondering about buying a new card:

Onoz, iz teh boss  :p

I don't know what to do with new cards coming up basically. It's like you say, new cards are coming all the time. However, it IS the end of a cycle now so maybe I will wait. I'm not in such a hurry anyway, it's just my credit card jerking in my pocket...

I'll make a sober decision after a couple of beers :p
