View Full Version : windows XP problem
ive got 2 xp pro machines, connected via a crossover cable, i can ping the IP addresses ive assigned from each of the machines without problem.
but i cannot see either of the machines, and the second machine cannot get internet access, ive already enabled internet connection sharing.
pc 1 has access to internet via a network cable going to a ntlworld set-top box
pc2 is plugged via a cross over cable to pc1.
anyone got any idea's ? ive tried just about everything i can think of....and win XP is not my friend, but i cant be arsed to re-install something better
check both are set to the same network name to connect to thats all i can think of off the top of my head

2 machines take forever to show. Put in another and voila... atleast thats how it used to be. Dont know if the computer browser been updated. You are not firewalling right?
Or do they still dont see each other after a couple of hours?
also check subnet mask.. had same trouble in a little network...

Two Questions :
1. Did you enable Netbios over Ip ?
2. Does Pc2 'know' that Pc1 functions as gateway ?
both are in the same workgroup.
ive had them both on for like 5 hours and they just dont see it each other even though i can ping them from each other.
subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 on both
so annoying not being able to find the problem.
does XP have some way of preventing machines connecting to each other without verifying and password etc ?

where do i enable netbios ?
and er yes pc2 knows that pc1's second card is the default gateway for inet access
do you have a firewall on the internet PC?
cos that was what my prob was.
make sure they have the same gateway and subnet mask:
example:
PC 1
IP address: 195.222.32.1
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 195.222.32.10
PC 2
IP address: 195.222.32.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 195.222.32.10
I'm just putting it up as an example but it should also work go try it out.
first make sure they can access eachother, then sort out the inet bs... you could set up a remote access to the pc which has an internet connection, but seems like your connected 1v1 so it's pretty useless since the account on the pc with the inet would get logged bleh >_<.

Netbios over Ip :
Right click 'My Network Places' -->properties --> Right click your 'local area connection' --> properties --> Internet Protocol Tcp/Ip --> properties --> advanced --> WINS --> Netbios settings.
@ lemon ive diabled my firewall to see if that works, but no joy from that.
@demon, here is the setup
pc1
pc1 has 2 network cards
card 1 > connects to NTL set-top box
card 2
ip 192.168.0.1
subnet 255.255.255.0
default gateway not specified
pc2
ip 192.168.0.2
subnet 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.0.1
so should i set the defualt gateway for the second card ? but what to? the card 1 address ?
omg the netbios worked, how stupid is that, i can see both machines now.
ok thanks for your help guys.
last question.
if i want to run a second client over the same connection do i have to change the port even though they are on seperate machines?
edit : arff already reply

No, normally not. I can run two Neocron clients over one connection without setting them on different ports.
My setup : One pc with two NIC's attached to a hub on one hand and to the cablemodem on the other hand. Three other pc's attached to the hub. Standard Neocron-installation on two of them ... works like a charm.
Good Luck.
