My old 1400mhz athlon xp is begging to run thin on power, im probably gonna be doing some major upgrades this spring....

Still yeah thats huge.

BUT...

Do keep in mind everyone shat themselves when they released the requirements for Quake3. No one had anything near what it needed to run, and people were pissed. A year later when it actually came out, the requirements were all of a sudden not such a big deal. Same thing should happen in this case.

Hmm..

My 1.4 athlon will need to go then.
512 of 1st gen DDR don't help either.

Would my 9500 pro be good enough? (128MB)

It says u need a gfx card with 128mb ram and is HAS to support 1.1 pixel shader but 2.0 pixel shader is reccomended....which is cards like the fx 59xx and rad 9800 as far as i know.

my cpu is actually a 2.8ghz athlon but runs at 2.2ghz and i never have known why athlon say there cpu's are actually higher than they runo_O anyone?

yeah dooms engine is getting far too close to 'real' physics .. stuff like every hair's shadow is calculated .. ok not that bad but its pretty mad

i once saw someone playing the alpha... was awesome then .. even with 7 fps :P

The actual model number (3000) suggests 3ghz, but it actually runs at around 2.2-2.3Ghz. But due to the architectural differances, such as that double data rate thing and others, it runs at the same speed as an intel 3.0ghz

So to prevent themselves being owned in the marketplace, AMD started using their model number system to give a real idea of the CPU speeds.

Damn.... I was configuring a new computer yesturday, my current one is over 2 years old. I was gonna go for a 3200 athlon 64, 512 megs of ram, Geforce FX 5900 128 mb..... and now it looks like that will be "just" good enough.... lame.

I just got my tax refund in the mail yesterday...

Spent most of today pricing PC's......

Looks like it's going to be 3.2ghz P4/ATI 9800 pro/1 gb 3200DDR

Hopefully, I'll notice a slight performance increase over my current 733mhz Celeron....

Doom III/HL2...

Uppdatering: id Software har nu dementerat ovanstående uppgifter från den tyska tidningen. Carmack har aldrig gjort detta uttalande och uppgifterna är alltså falska. Tipstack till r3load.

Which means that there are just false.... and ID software has gone out official and said that so just wait ;)

I would only need to upgrade my CPU which is only at 1.8 GHz right now. Everything else is fine. I won't be upgrading just for that game though.

aww so lame

my P4 2.4 ghz oughta run it though...i seriously doubt .1 ghz will differ in one game

Fuck Doom 3, nothing I've seen bar eye candy looks making an upgrade worthwhile.

Half Life 2 is far more interesting, as are several other games.

But half life 2 has been set back about 1 yr like the original was cuz Valve dont wanna release a game that they know will be probably the most popular game of all time for a long time in a shit condition (even tho atm it would pwn every other game out but i guess they want it to pwn games that arent even out at its release :p)

Will be upgrading to a 3.2+ GHz processor, 1024 DD Ram, Radeon 256 MB card, and retaining my 1 MB DSL.

All this....For BDoY. :D

On a side note, which is the BEST graphics accelerator out there? No budget range. Skys the limit. So i'd appreciate suggestions which reflect the very highest-end in gaming cards, since i dont want to settle.

Any ideas?

Havent a toffee of an idea as to what that is.

Got any specifications i could hand over to my technician? Perhaps a brand name? (And does it work well with all games?)

I'm only 2 GHz short! With my mad game tweakage skills i should be able to run it just fine! :p

Heh, seriously though, my old trusty non-overclocked PIII 450 MHz can still run the newest of the newest games, as long as I sacrifice some graphical quality.
Of course, it probably helps I'm not twitchy enough to recognize a difference between 24 and 60 FPS ;p

Dude throwing the cash around, wait a while longer, the new nvidia and ati cards are gunna rock...go look here (http://www.megagames.com/news/show.cgi?&idtype=hardware&list=196&) ....it seems that doom3's reqs will be average like someone said, this next card is already running 2 versions ahead of wot they need for pixel shader .....this ones 3.0.
