View Full Version : Important! New Spyware for account data theft in circulation

Hermod

Some new spyware programs are in circulation. If you see a process called "duplicate.exe" in your process window be sure to cancel it.

So be very careful what you download off of the neocron forum and anything related to neocron for that matter. For the time being it would be a good idea not to download anything neocron related that is unofficial for neocron.

Please put some sort of firewall and spyware remover up, as it is the best protection you can have for the time being.

Some free tools include
Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/zap/trial/zap4x_trial.jsp?lid=pdb_zaptrial) (Firewall)
Ad-Aware (http://www.lavasoft.de/) (Spyware Removal)

These tools do not guarantee 100% safety but it is better to be with them than without

UPDATE
The cause of the problem has been identified to a trojan backdoor program called Optic Pro 13.

This program should remove the virus from any infected systems (http://www.pandasoftware.com/download/)

For further info check this link (http://www.pandasoftware.com/virus_info/encyclopedia/overview.aspx?idvirus=39542&sind=0)

Dumb question,

Neolauncher pro, is it reakktor supported?

And exactly what 'new spyware' do you mean?

Elric

NeoLauncher PRO is NOT reakktor supported (read the disclaimer at the end of http://www.creITive.com/neocron). A few releases back it was "approved" though.

But neither does it contain this (or ANY) spyware. With so many people using this, you'd think at least some person should have found it by now ;)

But better be safe than sorry.... do use a firewall 'n stuff...

If you got a basic unterstanding of networking, then don't use zonealarm, use something like tiny personal firewall or kerio personal firewall.

Didnt zone alarm cause NC to freeze or crash or something or has it been updated since?

greploco
06-03-04, 15:14
zonealarm has been updated, as far as I know

it didn't just involve nc, it messed with a lot of games

I think it was addressed fairly quickly

btw, zonealarm is top notch + easy to use

That tends to happen the first time as the pop-up which asks if you want to let NC access the net comes up behind NC and you can't get to it without alt-tabbing.

Just put Neocron as having access manually on the Zonealarm page.

Get the Panda Antivirus and you won't have any problems. I tested all major antivirus programs on the market and Panda is the best. Please just trust me. Even the support (only tested it in Sweden but they are worldwide) is absolute top class.

And I don't work at Panda nor do I have any connections in any way with the company :p I'm just a happy user :)

so does this mean now you at least acknowledge hacking aimed at neocron that you will be rolling back some of the people who have been hacked?

Probably not seeing as its still arguably the responsibility of the player to make sure their computer is secure.

You have to pay for the Pro version, but there is a free version that works just as well.

Tell that to the devs that spend 8 hours a day programming this game that we all love so much. Stealing software is a crime whether or not you get caught.

I never said it was a good system. Just because you don't agree with it does give you the right to violate its laws. I reiterate, stealing software is wrong even if the market is controlled by a monopoly and the price is bloated.

Zonealarm = teh win.

Never had one problem with it, with any game whatsoever. Perfect for me.

It's caught many things before they had a chance to fuck with my system, I have been using Zonealarm for close to 6 or so years, and I would recommend it to anyone.

I swear to god, it's been 5 years now since I last got a computer
virus, and I download stuff off the forums, kazaa and everywhere
daily for years...

I don't use a firewall or have anti-virus software running, I do
one a month virus checks with the free online virus scan located at:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com

And use Spybot search and destroy once a week, I like using it
to clear all my caches on media player, winamp, IE, outlook etc
more than finding trojans which i never get, sort of a free window
washer in one.

You all just have to use good judgement, look at the source of the
download.... does it seem trustworthy, does the person on the forum
have a good reputation? has he been a member for a long time?

Make wise decisions and use good judgement. If it's a home computer
used by more than one person, forget everything above ;)

using a combo of Ad-Aware and SpyBot S&D (http://http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?lang=en&page=download) and Spywareblaster (http://http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) in that order keeps my delusions a bit safer.

they're all documented spyware-free themselves, and freeware.

but, alas, never trust just one program, or one AV prog, if ur using a palette of them, u may be a bit more secure, but never safe.

I use a combination of AVG virus checker, Adaware and Spy Sweeper. Spy Sweeper detects virii and spyware, so if AVG or Adaware miss anything, it usually picks them up.

im not a big fan of Norton or Mcafee since a lot of viruses r made to mess em up first.

AVG is pretty sweet although butt ugly

I prefer using Jeff K's measures of dealing with hax0rs.

When a hax0r enters my pc i quickly unplug my modam & trap teh hax0r inside.

Then while he's panicing cos he cant get out & can only look at my ugly background i uses my Jeff K leet hax0r torture tools ver 1.69 K4F Release for windos

And i tortures him for hours hrrhrrhrr FEEL TEH PAIN!

www.somethingawful.com/jeffk/ (http://www.somethingawful.com/jeffk/) Here's where i get all my pc advice tis top knotch

EDIT - lol just read about that virus it disables pretty much all virus scanners & firewalls including all the ones mentioned in this thread except athon's hardware linux firewall

A few more nice links for ya'll

http://www.trojanscan.com/

Its an ActiveX based product, so requires IE to run. Does what the URL says, scans for trojans

http://www.moosoft.com/products/cleaner/

Real-time memory resident scanner that detects and removes trojans, worms and keyloggers. - Commercial, but has a 30 day free trial, which is really all you need to get rid of any you may have. I'm not aware of any free ones however

http://www.grisoft.com/

AVG Anti Virus - free of course

http://scan.sygatetech.com/prequickscan.html

To check your vulnerabilities (best one out there)

http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareblaster.html
http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html

Spyware protection, freeware :)

Ok i have a serios problem. this may be a "bit" off topic but it can effect my NC account and all that. i have a virus that is in a file called winkey.dll and wininv.dll, i know this is a virus because everyone i talked to that has XP dose not have this exept me and my m8, norton also told me its a virus but it couldent get rid of it, an online scaning thing ( forgot name of it ) said its a virus but cant get rid of it cus its being accessed by a diferent program, its blocking my MSN mail AOL mail or anything like that exept this site, neocron, my website, and my yahoo mail. the infermation said its somekinda backdoor torjen or something like that that gives access to my computer to a sertem person that has a tool that they made or something like this. i downloaded panda titanium and all that, it cant detect it. it whont update itself, but yet on my laptop it detected it and removed it.. can anyone please tell me how to get this virus off my computer? and formating it is not an option because i cant atm...

edit : btw these 2 files ( winkey.dll and wininv.dll ) are both in windows/system32 on my windows XP comp...

Assuming the virus you're talking about is Backdoor.Prorat (http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/backdoor.prorat.html), then these should be the full removal instructions from Symantec. Since you're using Norton these should be accurate...

yea, thats what they said it is... ill try that and see if it helps. do these also block my MSN and all that?

see. the thing is i cant delet it... it sais access denyed or something like that because its in use by another program :/...

edit: yea i jest did all that that it said i found the reg things and deleted em but every time the anti virus trys you delet it it sais it cant repair it and access is denyed.
