Ok...so I'm (hopefully) getting a new comp soon...and I was thinking of going with a Radeon 9600...the one I was thinking of getting was an "Asus Radeon 9600 XT 128MB AGP 8X VIVO/DVI"...I was originally thinking of getting a 9600 All in Wonder...another guy told me that he'd just gotten one and was very happy with it...but it's got some features I don't really need...I just want the video-in so I can transfer some stuff from a camcorder over to a cd/dvd...But then like the other day someone was telling me the XT's don't get as good of performance as say other versions of the same card or even other versions of lower grade cards...so any advice anyone can give on maybe what type of 9600 would be best or anything of that nature would be appreciated...I'm looking to spend no more than about $200 max on a card...so plz don't suggest anything too xpensive...haha

If it makes any difference I'm looking to get an AMD ATHLON XP 2800+ QuantiSpeed CPU [512K L2 CACHE]

Thanks :)
cut and paste is my friend

get this one instead, try to get the Leadtek version. But u must get the version which has the 2.2ns of Hynix memory on. Very fast, very overclockable and very cheap.

Also imo get a 3200xp 400fsb oem chip
pc3200 ddr
dual channel mobo
Nforce 2 mobo

I like Sapphire and from what I heard they have a good reputation, as they actually make the official ATI boards too.

Anyway, if you are in the UK you might want to look at the Radeon 9800-Pro. They have recently nose-dived in price and you will get more bang from one. They are about the £150-180 mark at the moment, which I believe is similar to the 9600XTs.

[Edit] Agggh. Must read more carefully. You quoted $ so you're obviously not in the UK. Anyway, check the price locally in case it's not just the UK that the 9800Pros are nice and cheap (relatively) at the mo.

I just bought the Leadtek GF FX5900XT. Fantastic card and according to the 3d mark tests i done is running just as well as an ATI 9800 on an equivalent system to mine. It does fall over a little on the antialiasing stuff, but thats not something I use, so doesnt bother me much. Even then its only a difference of maybe 3 - 15 FPS.

You might also wanna factor in CPU speed if you're getting an upgrade just for better NC performance. NC is heavily reliant on the CPU. Basically, if you wanna run smoothly @ an event where there're mobs upon mobs and over 50+ people, have at least a XP 2000 or P4 2 Ghz +

neocron seems to push the cpu much more than the video card

imho (in my humble opinion)

with a new system it would be hard to go wrong with any 128mb video card (gforce or radeon)

asus are my personal favorites
