Hey, anyone else doing a university course at the moment? Would be interesting to see what my fellow NC'ers plan on doing career-wise :)

I'm doing a Games Computing course at Lincoln University, UK...
covering all aspects of game development, from 3D modelling and 2D animation, to Engine Programming and Project Management.

I'm in the second semester of my first year, and it's been a blast so far, my assignments are actually quite fun :) And we have a "geek lab" which is open from 8:30am to midnight every day and is full of fellow gamers and plenty of multiplayer action.

Anyway, if you're doing a course, post it and let us all know :)

Hey, how do I get into that? Sounds right up my alley. Better than working a crap job and just plain hating it.

P.S. I did history at the University of Oslo (Norway), now there´s something about as boring as it gets, and I like history.

hungry and soberTell me about it :)
Then again, it seems my diet consists mainly of alchohol and pop tarts (yes, they are sold in the UK, stop by your local Morrisons) at the moment. In fact, I'm preparing myself for my night out with friends with some Fink Brau (check your local Lydl's) as we speak... *hic*

It's a good course, and a good city...
The A level grades weren't too strenuous if I remember right (Fink is hoarding my memory). Do you have your A level grades with you? It's worth a look.

I'm liking university :) the freedom of moving from home to your own place is great :)

EDIT: http://www.lincoln.ac.uk/courses/comp-gamesi-mvr/entry.shtm - entry requirements, if you're really interested :)

The first year of Uni, is one of the best of your life.

It tends to go down hill once you remember you can't get pissed every night, and the work load increases.

My 'new' house is not only about 100 meters from my lectures but its about 50 meters from the cable exchange  theres gonna be 6 of us sharing the net so we'll get 1 or 2 mbit :D

In my 'flat' in the halls we've got a norweigen girl, shes pretty cool :P

*edit I realised that after the first fortnight DJ, I dont enjoy getting 'pissed' really often and I spend ages on my work so im ready for my second year :P

I'm sorta glad I didn't get into halls, they feel a bit too much like a youth hostel to me :( I think I'm gonna stay in my house till I graduate hopefully :)

Anyway, I gotta leave now, meeting a friend before I go out... keep posting :)

I start Uni in September 04, as a mature student.

Im studying 2 BsC hons degrees.

Computer Programming (4 years, full time)
Modern Philosophy (5 years, part time)

Not sure where at yet - last year i was accepted into Durham + 3 more (Manchester, Sheffield, Newcastle).

I think im gonna stay in sheffield - gotta love home :D

Only reason i didnt go sooner, was that i wanted to buy a house for my fiancee - and get some money saved. :p

Good to see all the posts :) Axion, good to hear of a fellow student, how's the third year treating you?

What with this whole top-up fee thing supposedly kicking in in a year or two, I guess the value of degrees is gonna rocket a bit :)

@ Sanch0s: I never really decided to try to get into the games industry for the money, it's more about getting a job I'd really enjoy that made me wanna join the course. Never the less, from what I've seen in various computing journals, a games designer can make up to £60k a year in a good position... bonus I guess :)

A friend told me that the Hull students did a bit a paintball now and then, but never got around to finding out where :)

I think the first year programming assignments have changed, I know the second years did a slot machine game for theirs last year, but we get to do a text based adventure this year... should be fun :)

but there good bruises :) Yeah, its a blast... especially when you get a good pit with proper pit-iquette, so when someone goes down, everyone helps them back up :) As opposed to the lamers around the edge who don't even dance, they just push people back into the pit when they're trying to get out after having the wind knocked out of them. But's it's all good :)

best way to deal with them is to dive at them sholder first, best case senario you shoulder/elbow them in the face, worst case senario they step back and you catch them in the chest and knock them over. Its win win :) (unless the bouncers see you of course)

Game design and programming, 3 years. Mostly design tho, alot
of script writing, project management, balance, what makes
game fun, computer-human interface, idea development,
etc. We have an "advisory board" made up of people from all the
big game companies and some publishers here in sweden that
help making sure that the classes are meaningful and that we
have the skills to work as game developers when we're done,
they also draft alot of people from here. They come here every
now and then and hold lectures or just look at our projects etc.
Pretty hard to get in, here in sweden the grades/eta are on a
scale from 0.0 to 2.0, to get in you need 1.8, same as the guys
that study to become doctors... its the best school for game
development in sweden tho. Very fun and rewarding.
