My Friend is about to Purchase a new Graphics card and he is looking at a GeForce FX5700 Ultra 256mb.

Good, or Bad?

It'll cost around £115 so he is looking to spend around that much.

What do you think?
Anything else he should consider?

you can get extremely good 128mb gf4 cards for about half the price, they appear to be quite similar to the "brand new" cards which cost more than twice as much.

I would also be interested to know if there is much difference?

anyone know that?

I'm with fx5200 128mb...... not a heavy gamer card so I'm thinking of buying nextgen geforce 6 o_O whenever that comes out

With the new generation of ATI and Nvidia around the corner I'd tell him to wait a bit and he'll get a better card for the same amount in a couple of months.

Not a bad card, but ATI are overclassing Nvidia not much, but theres a difference.

For 150 quid you can buy a Sparkle FX5900XT. That's the best card you can hope to get for that price.

ATi > nVidia for all intents and purposes

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!

Not... another... graphics...card...fanboi...thread...

Honestly, it depends on what floats your boat. Both companies have their ups and downs, and regularily overtake each other when new cards come out.

Nvidia does better at running stable with everything cranked to the max.

ATI does better with creating an awesome image quality, especially when you turn on the AA and AF.

If Possible, I'd try that FX5700 Ultra AND a 9600XT, and decide which one you like better. Both are damn good cards for the money and performance you get out of each of them.

It's all down to preference really, and all the fanboi responses make me wanna puke.

EDIT: The bullshit excuses about ATI having sucky drivers and Nvidia using cheap parts for their cards have absolutely no credit whatsoever anymore. ATI got their drivers together quite some time ago, and actually now, in some cases, run more stable that Nvidia Drivers. About the Nvidia parts thing, that was only true in the first 5800 Ultra, AKA the Windblower. Everything after that, for the most part, has been smooth sailing.

What I'm trying to tell ya is, if anyone uses those excuses in this thread, just shrug them off. It's really up to you, not the people that make false accusations. :)

If he can spare an extra £10 i'd go for a Radeon 9800 Non Pro at £125 inc VAT & then overclock it a bit

Actually if one prefers OpenGL games over DX games he should take nVidia, because nvidia really kicks Ati's ass in it. And then it goes other way around in DX.

Personally I wouldn't buy nVidia card at the very moment.
