Ok, early retail people, we all know who we are..

What do you miss from early retail, it don't have to be nice, or even kind to other people, but what do you rember about the "good old days"

Me, I miss the random killing myself.. everyone complained about them at the start and how the LE was nearly useless, but for all the complaining it made the world feel, somhow more solid, alway's watching your back while hunting..

Yeah that was quite good, seeing as it was a kind of Trust Noone except your friends feeling.

I miss the way people were care free, noone was arsed about 'nerfs' or overpowered classes, noone care about bad bugs, people just got on with it.

Yea.. But they played the bad guy's so well..

You'd alway's go oh shit when you saw in your local list the name's of the member's of HATE..

Some good times.. comming though a GR into the waiting gun barrel's of so many..

Not seeing a thousand monk's everywhere, well you'd see a monk and it'd be the uber hybrid.. but still..

Yea... These kid's have it a little too easy for my liking.. hell I rember before retail the aggy celler's simply didn't exsist, now them where good time's, I think I can trace all the loot nerf problem's right back to the aggy celler's implamentation...

but this is meant to be a happy look back at all the thing's we smile about and dream of their return..

lol i remember getting killed as a 0/2 noob monk and losing both my glove and my only spell  had to punch spiders till i had enough to get some more stuff.

early retail on saturn HATE are proberbly gonna be the major memory of most as they pk'd anything that moved, and if it wasnt moving its cos they had already pk'd it :P

umm my first big ops fights with MiG was fun, before then it had been smaller fights with my Followers of Crahn clan(seemingly reborn with Yamma in charge i belive)

hehe

when people placed grenades between the cops and ts guards then zoned, the cop vs ts guard fights where the best :D

hehe, when the cop takes damage the other two (zone cops plaza 3 - pp1) would come rushing around the corner

the ts guards got ownd so badly, poof then hey nerfed it :(

anyone else remember this?

(Btw how do i get my sig to work?)

Thats what I miss too.
PKs alone or two of them on killing spree, no PPUs and stuff, just setup & skill. You had a good chance against them if you stood up.
All it went down to was a cruel world where you had to watch your back all the time. I really miss that...

i miss copbotrifles being dropped outta copbots, like i miss gatlingpistols being dropped outta aggresors

i miss overpowerd phosphorrifles (the mutant ones)

i miss nathan profit with he's flamer in PP

i miss the fear i had off a hoverbot :/

i miss fighting in PP1 with 1 to 3 fps: when ya actually succeed in killing someone it feels soooo good yust cause its so freaking hard to kill someone that jumps left, right and up in steps of 25 meters a second :P

i miss events where ya fataled every 2 seconds cause everyone on the server is packed in 1 zone at MB J_O1, daamn that was fun

i miss a server with 700+ people

i miss my hybrid

them phosphor street rifles with scopes were definitely the shizzy back in the day

i remember recycling chitin for hours raising my dex and str like nuts

i remember when taking out and putting in the LE raised your dex and int, and doing it over and over again when i was bored, even if it was incredibly slow and i probably could have gotten better xp outside leveling

i remember my first OP war at McPherson vs. EoB on Pluto about 2 years ago heh....PPUs didn't matter...monks didn't matter...everyone was special for something- where did it go wrong!

HATE (or random PKers generally)

Less specialisation

There are no real villains in the game atm... sure loads of people kill everyone who is red but come on, they don't really compare to the carnage that HATE unleashed. Maybe there are a few dudes like Vett who have tried to pick up their mantle.... but I don't think that anyone has been able to give the feeling of terror at seeing their names on local as HATE did.

before patch #160

the bats at crest village were awesome. tons of xp...and most of all....

tons and tons of weapons worth between 3k-8k....you could make masses of cash if you were a newbie there. approx 400k per hour or so.

plus, gr's to and from your app were free.

it was a bit more carebear, true. but for newb's twas a lot fmore fun having more cash to splash.

then they destroyed neocron with the notorious patch 160. and had to have 5 patches within a week to fix everything. lol.

The only thing that comes to mind when i think way back to early
retail is the day pluto opened. There were hundreds of people
leveling in the sewers, people from beta were trying to be the first
ones capped. Every common leveling spot in the city's were taken
and filled with noobs, I remember punching a 0/2 player to death
with my 1/6 tank just to have space to level!

Then there's all the veteran players from beta that were in early
retail and either got banned or quit, eon, etc. Those times were
the greatest.

The patch that boosted high ranked mobs to be be three times
as strong and powerful. Going up to the typical warbot was no
longer easy peazy, trees were your friend.

FBI

Mingerroo
02-02-04, 18:04
Everything. Nobody gave a shit about cash because the economy was busted, and nobody wanted MC5s because they didnt exist.

It was all about the levelling and messing around, not the capping and PvP. It was just a more fun game when you didn't care about being capped, you just wanted to have fun.

Now there is so much that if you aren't capped you can't use it, and therefore are a hell of a lot weaker than capped players.

[edit]Oh yeah, the many clans and people who ganked you, but they roleplayed it and talked to you before hand. I remember some guy saying "I'm going to kill you, and you can't run fast enough to get away", or the time I pissed off a clan, they came to my appy and I agreed to come down as if they had dragged me out. They then stood in a circle around me and their commander said "no guns". I was promptly beaten to death for my PKing sins. That's what made the game really fun for me.

Oh, oh, or the time me and a friend RPed that we lived in OZ and couldn't visit the city, and we levelled in OZ all the time and learnt it off by heart... and we had city people come out to the station just to take our money and orders and bring us the weapons we wanted.

The severe trust and reward from trusting them made it all very "wicked".

I miss the spiderbot guards in TH, before they were replaced with turrets. They made funny clicking noises and servo sounds.

Copbots in Pepper Park were kind of funny, the way you would sometimes duck into dark courners to attack someone so they couldn't see you. You actually got to hear all their voice clips if they saw you with a gun, to do that these days you have to pull a gun out by the STORM Bots at the gate. Some of those clips are REALLY menacing :)

"Drop that weapon"
<pulls out gun>
"I said, put that weapon away."
<copbot gets ultra scary>
"Put...your...weapon...down!"

being able to judge a tanks skill by the colour of his suit..... right before he drew the cs and pasted my 0/2 ass over the sewer wall.

also there being known pkers around who u could watch go in to the sewers as soon as a noob went in just to gank them. codename.sexy was one of em on uranus a long way back. Watching 5 other people watch her follow the noob and gank her was even better. specially with the old rules of drops before belts came in to play.

i remember my first trip from TG to NC

leff driving an apc he wasa spy at the time
cray a droner spy
kjeldoran a tank
fridge a tank
me a hybrid monk (one of only 3 monks in clan)

leff had no ide where he was going and the drive took us about 4 hours along with sync and crash and other known car problems :)

we goto gates and it was the wrong gates at first it was the ones near simmons. so a quick turn around and we came to the main entrance it was like FUCK ME this place is big.

we went in side and got on the subway at outzone.

we got to pepper park into pp1 and i was like wtf where the hell am i :)

then us being tg we had a little fight in pp1 :) at this time i was like psi 40

then we got to p1 and i was like thank fuck it was fun and gave you an idea of size of the game which now seems tiny in comparison

1) Not knowing every inch of every map in the game.

2) Playing so much that I'd recognise most people by class and skin, without needing to look at their name. (Not joking :p)

3) The sewers in Plaza the day beta4 was released. I've never seen so many backpacks since :)

4) Not having to throw 95% of your points into specific skill to be combat viable. Nerf specialisation.

5) Hardly anyone understanding how resists worked. Heh.

The thing I miss most is the fear....

When I started you would get PK'd 2 or 3 times a day, and everyone you met was potential killer, these days I never get PK'd even with new characters.

Random PKers if done correctly (with good penalties to stop everyone doing it) add that element of fear which can make the game griping (along with good penalties for death)

I miss being truly nervous about walking into pepper park. Back when there was the possibility of me dropping one of my more favored weapons, it made me be really careful and look around every corner.

Now, I don't have to do that. I have a trusty safeslot that I keep my favorite weapon in and I have a belt that the crap I might drop will fall into.

I remember on several occasions, I was killed by styles in the canyon and I dropped a medkit. Boy, I miss that medkit.

I miss seeing the bunker at MB full, and then people running in terror as a TG raiding party rolled through it.

I miss noobs fighting back inside MB, me being my spy using a low level shotgun and actually hurting someone.

I miss the first time my clan and I went to tag the GRs around MB and ran into warbots.

I miss the feeling when I killed my first Marsh Hippo and marveled at the 'uber' experience.

I miss fights when over a 100 people would show up, lag the servers so bad everybody crashed.

I miss the look of terror on a tanks face when we had 5 tanks with rocket launchers blast him to hell (he got hit by 2 or 3 at the exact same time, talk about a one time shot).

I miss being able to drone and shoot rifles at the same time, plus drive a vehicle.

I miss seeing my tradeskiller buddies (Misguided and Jalthier), they quit when Specialisation was introduced.

I miss the smack talk on Zone chat and every other channel, it was good natured, now its endless lame flames.

I miss watching gaudhand wipe out an entire clan with his drones.

I have to say Starkes as well :p

* Opening the big doors to the wasteland at OZ station for the first time (you could almost hear the 2001 music in the background)

* First WB was actually a spawn on my head for me. I had nightmares about that one...

* Went out to a storage in OZ as a noob and met a butchee. Somehow I managed to kill him with a stiletto while crouching or something. Remember he had a * and I was like woooooow, wonder if I get that after I kill him :p

* Hurler bridge in IND SEC 2, man I miss those days :( *sniff*

* 1st day of beta registration (a Monday). I was in the IRC channel and all people just went utterly and completely bezerk. All pressed refresh on www.neocron.com just to see if the registration turned up.
I remembered some poeple got so excited when it actually turned up that they couldn't fill it out.

"OMG AAAAH I PUT THE FROM NAME THEY WILL BAN ME NOOOO"
" I'm to exictetd to fill out form HELP OMG IT'S HERE"
"NOO WTF TEHY CALL ME NOOB AND BAN BE NOOO"

So to some it up we need specialisation nerfed to fuck so we dont need every single point in eg. R-C just to cap freq on a first love.
And we need outzone to be a viable place to hunt and lvl.

i miss the rush you got in pvp when you knew someone could drop their rare gun
i miss the days when a players item dropped freely without the quickbelt
i miss the days you could pvp and have 5 new rares then the next day have none
i miss not having to break a sweat when you had 2 warbots on you

i remember the "good ole days" as being a morass of confusion, bugs, more confusion, and still more confusion. did resists work? did armour work? did armour get fixed with the last patch or broken again? if resists and armour are working now, HOW the fek DO they work?

people putting all their points into HC or RC or PC and gimping themselves to hell (ach - people STILL do that). people trying to get the highest possible combat rank because it's "better". tanks using HC PA because it's "better". people trying to get the highest possible DEX or STR because it's "better" (capped tank + BEZ2 + BEZ3 + Marine + harden back + moveon + beast = teh win). people with idiotically modded 4 slotted weapons thinking they were better than a properly modded/statted 1 or 2 slotter.

and yes, i've personally made all these mistakes. but what's nice is that we've learned. we now basically know how resists and armour work (no small thanks to the brave and determined few who tested this stuff endlessly, some of whom actually had the grace to share their findings) and can have a reasonable stab at balancing our resists. we now know that capping your weapon is the very last thing you should be trying to do. we now know to try alternative armour setups to the PA cookie cutter ones.

it's a far cry from the days when i was running around on my PE with moto3, vhc3 (yes - really VHC3), dex boost 3, SF and mindcontrol 3 so that i could meet the reqs of my redeemer. happy days, yes. and i miss the blissfull ignorance, but i wouldn't swap it for what i've learned in the meantime.

I remember expecting shadow run online and getting something quite different.

There used to be a bug that meant that someone higher level could attack you but you could not target them. There was a monk exploiting they bug and trying to pk me. So I pulled out my grenade launcher and through shear luck got three direct hits :)))

he felt the sudden need of a dental appointment and left :)))

I remember my first trip into the wastelands with my friend. I remember he picked me up at the nc gates (he was in PA by now) in his vehicle and he drove me to the ASG, which everyone used to call 'the garage' and how when a wolf came along he told me to stay still else itll kill me. So he got out and shot it and we carried on. Then when we reached 'the garage' we saw a TG. And back then, no matter who you were, you HAD ot be carful about being near a TG cos then they were renowned for being HARCORE pkers. I remember hiding in the shrugs to avoid being seen, and then went he went away we went on our way.

Also remember the days before everyone had rare weapons and i never knew the significance of the little swirly around the rare weapons. I remember when Hakusho Soulweaver first explained to me about rare weapons and how he gave me 5/6 parts for a ROLH for my spy who was a bit nooooobish back then.

I miss everyone not knowing shit about the games, and all the lvling spots and stuff like that. My first trip to the aggie cellars where i got PKD cos i didnt have enuf agility to jump onto the boxes to get out. I remember when i used to have a mix of PC and RC cos i just didnt know shite about the game, and how i had no idea how to use loms to fix it. And how when i rerolled the guy cos i cldnt be fucked with LOMs i like lvled my guy to like /20 in a day and i thought i was rally good. Now i can get a new char to /50 in less than a day, as long as u got a ppu.

OO OO and do any of u remember when BASIC resist one pretty much made u immune to any poison, and how u cld go down to the swamp caves and just lvling for hours on end without any worrying about dying. I mean even a spy cld lvl there on his own without any worries what so ever. :). Those really were the days.

I also remember when i first bought a hovertech and i went into the wastelands getting GRS and then i crashed it into the lake by jeriko. Also when i finally got it out i travelled across the wastelands and i kept seeing big creatures like DROMS and stuff and think they were really big and powerful. Back then i didnt risk getting close enuf to discover droms were 1 hit kill /10 mobs :P.

THOSE WERE THE DAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYS (simpsons style)

i miss the random pk'ers too, of course...

Where do I start....
I miss...

- Being able to do tradeskills without worrying about "lubes" and "gels"...
- Being able to do a tradeskill AND have a decent combat skill...
- Not knowing virtually every nook and cranny of the world... getting lost.
- Being able to buy a weapon or blueprint for one and have it built within a few minutes at almost any time of the day.. Not having to search hours for a tradeskiller.
- Being able to change my faction simply by making my sympathies higher for them. I played around with this alot. Changing from Tangent to Fallen Angels to Crahn to Twilight Guardian to CityAdmin, etc. It was strangely fun.
- Being able to go anywhere in the game as any faction and not get shot by faction guards (unless I had negative sympathy).
- Playing with my friends. Usually kept to myself aside from three friends I knew from out-of-game. Alas, none of them play anymore. Various other nameless scourges have claimed their damned souls...
- Hanging out at the Outzone 4 spawn in a huge team getting loads of XP as a lowbie and sharing the loot with the others. Most of the times I've been there in the past few months its deserted. Might be related to the fact that the spawn occasionally breaks and few know how to get around that.
- First trip to Tech Haven with my friend. It seemed like it took so much longer... And we were constantly dodging hovers.
- The occasional Warbot hunt night with my friends. We'd spend an hour or three dropping Warbots and other assorted mobs. Collect a lot of rares and as many weapon parts as we could carry. Last time we tried Warbot Hunting 2 hours yielded a handful of parts and a few decent imps.
- Hearing in September 2002 that a free expansion, "Dome of York" would be out in first quarter 2003... and believing it..

Rather depressing... :(
Oh well. Life goes on.

This might sound a bit odd, but for me, besides the higher server populations, the next best thing was i met some very very odd people during beta 4 and early retail, i mean truly strange and disturbing individuals. People were a lot more shifty back then and you could trust no one. People would be nice and then mean the next second and that dirtiness to the game made me want to play more. As dark and gritty though, there were people that played with some great senses of humor about killing. Now all we get is people pissed off spamming trade.

I remember leveling in the sewers and having a grand time until a tank with a grenade launcher would come. 4 of us newbs would try to kill the other newb. was so fun.

We still have the bugs here to remind us of those days

I miss the start of retail when everyone was a noob, no question was too stupid and no one had heard of 'cookie cutters'.

Other than that things are good. Despite what it may seem, the game is better (and more stable) than it used to be (down to population decline rather than much optimisation imo).

I miss:

- being good in PVP as spy :O
- buying 100 INT for about 10.000.000.000 nc (and was able to have so much cash)
- hiding cash cubes in gogo and cabinets (mayby kk dont find it !)
- geting 1 free slot all artifact EPR from GM because i lost all inv due to bug
- my 7 sloted TA
- tons of Armor Parts 9 in Escador Oasis (good cash)
- hackers paradise in K13 where about 10 wooden crates acting like outpost console .... 10 hacks, tons of XP, relog , 10 hack ... etc
- ghosts in Swamp Caves (npc that you cant aim and they dont move etc all looks like female PE ... OMG wtf ?)
- set reset_position (or smt) to move faster in wastes :D
- finding first Advanced Nervers 1... omg not buyable implant wtf ? :D
- having full set of Inq 1 (and one part of Inq2), Experimental bones etc as spy ..
- ppl from NCAT .....

I miss:

- People being so helpful, no more just give em a 100k to shut em up like now, but more like give em a decent rifle they can look forward to using :)
- Being a tradeskiller, having lots of business (Got very rich as me first Researcher standing in Plaza 1)
- Less random noob PKing, it was like so much easier to level back then.
- How big the server popultations were, we had 100 active members in me first clan, man were those clan hunts so much fun.......

And although I like the quickbelt system, I do remember enjoy finding something really sexy just lying around, I wouldn't mind hackable belts nearly as much if it came up in a window so I can still see my local and such.

And the rare guns point is the most important. Not only were we more cautious of PvP (not just storm them until we finally win) because we could drop a gun, but it was also a great reward for your victory if they happened to drop their weapon.

Konrad, long time man! 14k 4eva!!!! :D

Random memories:

OMG Rade I remember that APC incident. From then on there was seriously bad blood between us and SS. I remember seeing eRazor in PP1 and i was just a // newb or something. I never ran so fast in my NC life.

I remember saving up for a Rhino tank, and tanking it for a drive. When people found out I scored one, there was a true sense of excitement. Its first run, I remember a few tanks begging to be its first gunner. The awe of the people who saw it. I had a thing for vehicles back in the day, even tho they sucked.

I miss 14k, and TR most of all. TR fighting NDA/SS/Maas/Auriga/PIMP/everyone else on the server.

TR fighting Gang at Rockshore, an awesome huge fight we won...then fighting at...ummm....Damnit I forget and losing to them. Awesome day of OP wars. EDIT: Tezla maybe

I miss raiding MB/TG/TH. I miss elkdor, and his scottish voice over Teamspeak LOL. When I first met him, I was hunting at Cycrow. He ran up on me and started blasting me. I did some damage, but he schooled me pretty good since I was a newb monk vrs PE. He sent me a tell talkin shit, and I replied with something like Good fight. We got to talkin and were friends ever since. In MMO's I meet more friends through fighting them than anything.

Me and wo0pin pwning copbots in PP1.

The excitement I'd get seeing that SS just hacked one of our OPs, I knew a fight was waiting for us. Then getting there and seeing Shadow, .cylon, -insert uber PSI here- ... thinking this might end up ugly.

Fighting twinkle and flyk.

Being in CSM for a short time, there was a group of some tightly knit guys. I forget the OP name now, but we'd defend it at all costs.

Popping in my PSI Core, I was SO uber :)

The Grim Chaser hunts...MB bunker raids...That hollow feeling you get when your defending an Op with like 5 guys and you see like 5 enemy clans come over the hill, all buffed and blood thirsty.

and others. Good to be back in NC, im havin a lot of fun. I hope the server pops get a nice boost with DoY.

I miss being afraid of Warbots, Cyclops, terror maulers and such, etc...

Now all that scares me is a mob that is 120/120 right next to me.

Wanna know what I miss?

Knowing that anyone could come up to me and kill me back during beta 4. (ANYONE)

Im not afraid of any of the mobs anymore really.

Theres no sense of adventure anymore.

I think I most miss that people hadn't fully sussed how to play the game yet. Resists setups weren't perfected, there was still various ideas about how stuff worked, etc.

Had two effects which I liked - the first was just the newness and the sense of exploration and adventure as people were finding things out.

The second may be a bit more specific to me, but it was that equipment and levels made less difference because people weren't squeezing as much use out of them. So I found more fighting at sub-cap levels and characters without the best equipment were more useful.

Though I may be remembering beta4 more than early retail - I'm unsure when things started to shift away from that.

That or the lower focus on specialisation (again, I forget exactly whether the specialisation patch(es) were retail or beta).

04-02-04, 01:12
ah yes the fear...

and i had a lot to fear in beta 4...

my clan was KOS to every major clan.... step outside and any of Eradicators, Crackies and every other top 10 clan would try n paste me on the wall..

drug flashes weren't that bad back then either...

my spy went from like a >> or >>> to a ** if i popped a red and a whiteflash... (turned on my SF (which was like an Marine back then, i think) which in turn would turn on my various exp bones and so forth and my rank would just boost)

i remember scaring the crap out of a few ppl who came for an easy gank and suddenly the lowbie turned around with a couple of stars and a 5 or 6 slot EPR (thanks for that one Maker of Stuff)..

It all felt darker, and fresh.

It felt as if there was a purpose, that PKing was going to be an intergrated part of the game.

Item drops gave tension and excitements to fight, and often didnt require players to HAVE rare weapons.

i remember the first time i made it to CRP/Cycrow, was stood at cycrow GR remarking on how much Raptors hurt, next thing i step out the GR, steadily aim my 4 slot TPC and open fire on the nearest mob, im feeling the excitement u got back then when u found a new mob that u hadnt killed before, all of a sudden vernichter appears waving a CS at me, i frantically run for the GR, spraying off some badly aimed shots as i flee, i just get to the GR, but i was too late, i die, GR to my apt, frantically checking for what had dropped (items dropped outta ALL QB slots)....

BASTARD!!!!111 he had my 4 slot TPC...so i get on direct to beg for it back, but vern just laughed and said it was "another for his collection".

He took great pleasure in DMing me and showing me my TPC in trade whenever he saw me in medi lol.
