Whats the virus called ? or did they just give the usual TS reply '' you have a virus so it aint our problem, fuck off and sort it out yourself'' in their reply ?

A .bat file is specifically, a DOS batch file. These are normally a plain text files which carry out a list of commands. Windows ME and below and all versions of MS DOS use a file called c:\autoexec.bat that is a list of commands to run on startup - so don't freak about it. Windows XP still has this file, tho it's normally empty.

As for free antivirus, I use AVG Antivirus which can be downloaded from http://www.grisoft.com/

OMG. First of all, you made me feel too old. But second, i still use .bat files. Since they are an effective way to automize some repeatative(sp/word?) jobs.

They dont contain any data like .EXE. BAT files are just a list of ToDo things, uncompiled and in clear text. They are interpreted at runtime.

.EXE are compiled(tho for humans unreadable) programs. Their older version is .COM, that came first used in CPM (the father of DOS), and are limited to 64kB

But back on Topic:
I prefer "fprot" for antivir. just google for it.

AVG is quite good for a freebie. I believe the webpage for it is www.grisoft.com.

Hope your computer gets better soon.
