Yeah i know u can use it without buying it, but my boss wants to legally install it on every machine and system in the company.

It also looks a bit dodgy when you zip up a file with a auto-extractor and it gets to a corporate client and says "this file was zipped up from un-licensed software blah blah.

so an alternative that completely free ? if it exists

You can use Winace, Winrar gives annoying popups, but is still good.

heres a free thingy, but i have no idea how good it is.. (http://download.com.com/3000-2250-10188238.html?tag=lst-4-8)

just found one called justzipit, tested it and it looks pretty nice, 400K so 4 times smaller than winzip and made a 2mb file compress to 1.2mb where winzip could only reduce it to 1.6mb

WINNAR

Close thread plz mods

Only using zip files though.

Got win rar and winaceinstalled. Like them both.

And as rade said winace is free you just get a pop up when u use it until u register.

Yep 7zip is the best I've seen in a while. It's really streamlined, no need for any silly extras in the interface. Winace and even Winrar can take a little while to open up because of their interfaces. The coolest feature though is it lets you cascade the context menus. Rather then stuffing another 5 options in it, it gives you one with an arrow, move over and up pops another menu with the typical zip/unzip operations. I believe it's also faster at decompressing then any of the others. It has to be fast because the .7z compression format that it introduces is prolly the best I've ever seen. It compresses much better then any rar/zip/ace, the downside is .7z takes longer to decompress, because of how compact it stuffs the files. So when doing a simple zip file, it flies : )

Just in your opinion. In my opinion it's teh win. Other win systems suck ass and i don't even want to talk about linux... it's not an OS, linux is more like a lifetime challenge for ppl who like to configure all the time without beeing able to play some games at all and use some softwares.

Winzip basically uses the same compression as JAR, which is free with Java JDK.

jar -xf filename.zip = Unzip
jar -cf filename.zip *.* = Zip

Fine for at home, but you can't use it for business legally

ARJ and it's little brother JAR (Not the same as the one that comes with JAVA, makes .j files) are what I use for anything that doesn't need a GUI (ie: Boot Disks). Gets good compression: equal to or better than ZIP and RAR in some places.
