My wifes comp crashed and all I have right now is this laptop with XP on it.

Her comp crashed and reboots saying windows can't start because of a corrupt file, <windows 2000 root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

I tried last good configuration, safe mode, all the boot options.

I tried this too..

I really need those emergency repair disks, but I don't have another win2k machine.

I searched for download sites, but can't find anything.

It's been a long busy day and I'm tired, but if you have any ideas please post them.

thanks..

http://www.bootdisk.com/ ?

*edit a 'repair' disk is usually the actual windows disk in most cases .. but if you sold your soul and got a dell or something they'll give u some lame 'recovery' disk

u could be pretty crwed without a win2k disk ...

IF it's the backup disks you need borrow them of someone else.

You could try the Win 2k Registry Repair Utility (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=56d3c201-2c68-4de8-9229-ca494362419c&displaylang=en). It might help you out.

Also, if you have your XP install disk you can try to use that to run recovery or repair (see here (http://www.tek-tips.com/gviewthread.cfm/lev2/67/lev3/70/pid/621/qid/668957)).

If you like here (http://oldlook.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/Win2000/Q_20764296.html) is a link to a forum discussing this issue and some possible fixes.

I hope that some of this helps you out.

Good luck. :)

Use the Win2k CD and bootup with that.
When it loads the installed select the repair option and it should replace the corrupt files with nice shiney copies.

If you dont have a OS CD then you probably dont have a licence in which case your screwed.

That's true, but I know very few people who actually read their EULA's, and, of course, only those masochistic people who read it would know that. :p

Anyway, not many people actually take the time to do that and others don't have CD burners to bother. I have a burner, but haven't bothered yet. Of course, I'm extremely anal and take care of everything like that. I actually have audio CD's from 15 years ago that look like new, and I've played them a lot.

In any case, I hope everything works out for you, Seven. If you can't get it working, you could always get another OS. :)

Thanks for the help and links guys!

I tried the repair thing last night, well this morning... was up till 4am, but it keeps asking for those disks.

As for what I was doing, I was scanning a picture and went to save it and got an error that it couldn't find the file.

And it's not a dell, It's an 850 Athlon I built for the wife and I have a legal copy of Win2k so it's just a matter of trying to get some personal files and mail off the drive before formatting.

OK, off to try the links.

Thanks again! ;)
