Okie i got 200 euros to spend on my PC. Im prolly getting some new GFX card and the ever lasting dilema is here.

Ati or Nvidia?

In particular:

ASUS ATI Radeon 9600SE with 128 mb DDR at 134 euros?

or

Albatron GeForce FX 5600 with 128 mb DDR at 128 euros?

or

Albatron GeForce FX 5600 with 256 mb DDR at 165 euros?

I have to say i am i am biased towards Ati products myself. Ive been telling most of my friends to get ATI products and theyve been very happy with em.

So what do you think?

Please justify your opinion :-)

I think the expensive ATI cards are far better than the Geforce cards but if you only got a certain ammount of cash to spend geforce gives you a good card for a good price.

I am running geforce FX 5200 and it cost me only $100 cnd its a good card and that is a dam good price. I dont think I could have got an ATI with same preformance for so cheap

What about those 2 (or actually 3) specific GFX cards?

Get the FX-5600, it out performs the 9600 by far. If your going to want to play the new good looking games get the 256 one, it'll make a difference ;).

If you got the cash I would go with the better nvidia. However this is my personal preference im sure there is an ATI fan that could make a good case as well.

One thing i cant seem to figure out.

Are those 3 cards the Pro variations?

I mean ive seen the Radeon 9600 being outperformed by the 5600 PRO but beating the crap out of the plain 5600.

Is there a place i can check this out?

From Tomshardware.com:

Compared to the FX 5600 Ultra, the 9600 PRO seems the better choice. For the most part, it offers higher performance and also takes the lead in image quality, thanks to excellent FSAA and anisotropic filtering. The FX 5600 Ultra also seems to have trouble with some modern games like Aquanox 2 (with DX 9 shaders) and Splinter Cell. The results of the 3DMark 2003 subtests were also disappointing. Then again, the possibility remains that NVIDIA will be able to remedy this with a newer driver revision

So according to them ATI>N-Vidia.

Still i wana see if i can get hold of a Radeon 9500 PRO. Damn that would own.

The GF-FX will be faster for most things but the Radeon is far faster in games that use pixel shaders. And since lots of games are coming out that will use them, I would say get the Radeon. If however you are gonna upgrade again in 6 months to a year, then get the GF-FX, since it is indeed faster with older games. There's no reason to get the 5600 with 256MB ram, any game that needs that much on the card will run very poorly on a 5600 anyways.

Yeah ive been looking everywhere for a Radeon 9500 Pro or a Radeon 9700 pro (both overscoring the 9600 and the 5600) but they are nowhere to be found. Alas i will keep looking for them!!!!

I have an ATI Radeon 9800 XT, I absolutely love it, I'd recommend one over any other card that's on the market right now. I get great FPS in every game I play, and I play on highest settings on all games.

Ignore DX9 data - ATI got to market first by being somewhat non-compliant. ID are now hinting that Doom 3 will run like dog-shit on the ATIs they intended to bundle it with because ATI cut too many corners.

By the time any decent DX9 games hit the market both companies will have their next generation out. Pick the card on DX8 only unless you only intend to run benchmarks on it.

On DX8 NVidia are far better value for money.

the difference between 5600 128 and 256 is minor and not worth the money. FX5600 128Mb get my vote.

Actually with all the multi-pass processes in DX9 cards the memory is worth it if you want to turn up the detail. Then again, you know you'll turn it down a few mins later for higher fps.

Personal preference I guess.

I'd say go with the ATI card's. Euro for euro they are generaly faster, if you can find an old 9700 pro grab it, if not 9600 is ok, though it's alway's better to just bit the bullet and spend that little extra for the better card's..

I think you should get this one: GeForce FX 5900 SE also know as GeForce FX 5900XT.
Basically it is priced at mid range and it's almost as good as a regular 5900/ATI 9800pro!
I normally like ATI more for some reasons but this card is way better than anything price/performance wise. The bad thing is at least in Denmark (my country) it is not for sale yet. My guess would be Jan/Feb if you can wait that long.
Well to document my oppinion:

OK after a lot of pleads to my father, i managed to get him to buy me a Hercules Ati Radeon 9800 SE All-in-Wonder. What do u think?

Well, there is a wide discussion about that specific brand of card ATM. Apparently some can be softclocked to 9800pro performance. Do a google on it and you will see what I mean.

Has the card actually been ordered? My missus ordered me one 3 weeks ago from Dabs and there were a lot of problems with them not getting any stock etc. I ended up getting a 9600pro, hasn't been delivered yet so I can't give you a definative review of its performance.

Hehehe the card is in my PCs 8x AGP slot as we speak. Yeah i heard about em being hackable into 9800 pros but im not sure if it can be done with my card because its not a plain 9800 SE but an All-in-wonder version, meaning that it has intergrated TV-Tuner and video editing capabilities. Still a google on the matter is imperative :-)
