View Full Version : Creating new char: spy

Hi there,

I am thinking about creating a new char that can hack (about 100 base) and poke (about 100 base) . I thought about making this char a member of the class spy because of the high INT. I would also like to make it a rifle-user. However do I have enough weapon lore left (about 105) to make it worth it? Can I cap the high-end rifles (low-tech and high-tech)? Maybe I should skip poking or be a pistol or drone user? Anyone got some thoughts about this?

Thanks in advance!

105 is very low for a rifle user but you can use pistols with ease

If you want to go rifle then pick only 1 tradeskill, either hacking or poking but having both can somewhat gimp you.

Use pistols, you can have less wep lore than that. Put your hack to 90, poke to 99 (Spy 3 will up it to 115; enough for MC5), and wep lore to 90. All leftover int points should go into psi use. Use SA/SF/Distance3/Ballistic3 for head imps to get good RoF on slasher, reflex booster 4 for backbone.

Carry a Explosive Lib at all times for killing monks, and some tech pistol for everyone else. Aim for 180 P-C with imps/PA, 88 tech with imps/PA, and 70 agility (I prefer a lot more agility, somewhere around 100, but I gimped that for enough vehicle to drive the higher level vehicles), the Reflex will help with your agility.

As for con all you have to worry about is fire and energy, as you already have massive xray resists from your PA, don't forget to get a heavy belt from Tech Haven.

Str you'll need some transport and some Force Resist, fuck around with it until you find something you like.

And psi is up to you, I haven't even capped psi yet ;) (But then I haven't capped dex or int either :()

Good luck with your char dude, they're a bitch to level (Try the swamp caves near Gravis OP.)

Thanks a lot! I think I will be using pistols then so i can be a poker and a hacker as well. Nobody named droning as an option. I guess droning isn't something to try?

IIRC you can use str imps to wear INQ armor, since you'll be using liberator. Rade knows more about this than I do, :p.

You could also drug up for shelter. That would be ubar!

A pistol spy who uses Liberator (except against monks) or doesn't wear Inq armor = dead pistol spy, in my experience (which is admittedly brief). RoLH is a great close range weapon and Slasher is an excellent all-around gun, though you need an agility/tc gimp or a pistol 3 boost to really get the most out of it. With around 180 pc, you'll need something on the order of 140 weapon lore to cap damage on a RoLH (I get 164% dmg on mine with 150-ish lore and 177 pc, but it has a 109% damage stat and I have yet to re-cap dex after my last batch of loms).

Also, you'd do well to learn to love your drugs :p

Meh. Don't listen to the naysayers. Diversify, you'll be fine. Sure, you'll aim 30% slower than pure riflers... but GOD FORBID you can do something they can't! People who force you to go down the path of specialisation are ruining the game, in my opinion. It's not KK's fault... they simply gave you a bonus for being a pure combat character. Meaning it shows if you spec "UBER" rifle combat and weapon lore. But of course, EVERYONE has to be UBER when it comes to fighting. Sheesh.

Here's some tips:

Pick up a Special Science and a Special Forces, they'll save you a LOT of INT points.

Don't bother with rares. The Commando sniper rifle does CRAZY damage, and is easier to cap than the Silent Hunter. Maybe make the highest one you go for a Pain Easer.

Have fun with your character, and remember that you're not one of those cookie-cutter bitches :D

A TL115 implant/hybrid monk (they said it wouldn't work)
A TL 150 CST, 165 RES, 115 IMP Slasher-using pistol spy (they said it wouldn't work)
A Commando Sniper Rifle/Melee tank (guess what they said..?)

Mumbly, doesn't all that poking gimp your rof on PPU spells?

Yes, but if I die I can be battle ready again as soon as SI falls. And that more than makes up for it.

Funny, i'd prefer not to die at all, which having a high rof on ppu spells helps to achieve. :p

I solo most of the time. And I have 0 points in PSI Use. I don't care if my heal takes 1 second or 3 seconds to cast... :)

i strongly suggest drone to LvL up then you can loom rifle.
Trhow in as much you can first in the combat skill. wpw or wpl depend.. then when you get about 100 wich is easy started putting some in implant. forget 99. 84 its ebough. grab a glove and a buff (spy 3) if you really want to poke Mc5. anyway at 84 you will be able to poke anyone else.
then keep putting point in youre combat skill. and started to put some in hacking. by the time youll get to 50 in hacking you will be ready for WB. Especilly with drone.

The only draw back with drone Its the 2 other tradeskill. those point you need them a little more then other (rifle or psitol).

With all implant and PA My spy rifle have 88 (78 pure)in hack,
161 in wpl (126 pure), 84 in research(74 pure). i have Science force, Special science, exp balsiticweaponchip 3 and vehicule 3 (to be able to drive the 4x4 chaincraft. Smart cyber-eyes 4 and dext booster 3. With my glove and my neural advancement backbone. in a allied op with buff 3 i can do E part without breaking too many. (1/15-20) in dext T-C 95 if you want to use the stealth II. a little bit in recycle. just enough and some point in vehicule use (cant remember how much). all the rest in R-C about 166. AGL dont put any point there since you want to be rifle. no need. Same goes for droner. (im not cap (6 to go in dext, 10 in intl)nor im i a uber pker but i can manage myself)
For the rest.. its up to you.

Thanks again! So droning is very usefull in the early stages in leveling to gain Int XP. Later on you can lom WPW and RCL away to WPL an R-C or P-C.

yep
or can even stay droner for the rest of your life..but understand this...droner in pvp sometime sux... you have to be really high in both skill to be effective. Because drone damage on runner is weak..
i really met almost no-good drone in pvp. Almost :)

If youve got some nice guns and rare imps like SF and SS or even SA and Hawkins, its possible to use rifles. Just go for 99 imp and 90 hck, a spy booster 3 will help you to poke tl 115 and hack ops and most belts. If you put the rest into wep, you will get good aiming on most rifles. You wont cap the high end rare guns but your wep will be enough to use em for pvm.

If you want to pvp, its a completely different thing. You can be a good sniper with one tradeskill, 2 would be too much. If you want to pvp, get a LOT of wep, some psu helps a lot, then use the rest for a tradeskill. Get a shitload of r-c, enough t-c for stealth 2 at least and maybe 25 vhc to ride a hovertec. Put most con points into health and atl, some into fire. Done. Nice sniping spy. :)

Droners...well you can level up fast. Damn fast. Rifles get your dex up faster if you know how but your int will be slow. Losers drone up till they cap, then lom over to whatever they want to do cause its the easiest way (and the most boring one plus you dont get any rare parts or imps or loot). Those people suck.
