3) Baldurs Gate 1

5) Morrowind

hmm, can't decide either ... have to add the following to your list:

Gothic I + II
System Shock I + II
Ultima series
Might & Magic series
...

too many to name them all, and some of them are probably older than some players here :D

Well the rpgs I`ve had most fun with and that thrilled me the most was:

1. Ultima Underworld 2. OMFG 3D Grafics?!?

2. Daggerfall

3. BG 1 and 2

4. Eye of the beholder

5. Ice Wind Dale with 5 buddies with laptops a hub in my living room :D.

I guess the reason for me putting up the old games here is that they where my first rpgs. I would probably laugh at them now, but when I got UU2, man it was so increadibly good. After a while I kind of got spoiled with other rpgs as they became known territory.

I don't have very much preference over these but here ya go...

Deus Ex
FF7
Chrono Trigger
System Shock 2
Baulder's Gate I
Icewind Dale I ( havent played II )

MkVenner
25-11-03, 19:48
2 is better than 1 (icewind dale) but slow to get started, story wise. And its based on 3rd edition D&D instead of 2nd like the earlier ones

Er-hem... I play way too many RPGs, which is a pity, considering 99% of all games in this genre are tired old crap. And don't mention the typical Final Fantasy battles, they make me cry.

One thing to bear in mind - the definition of RPG. Now, some people have listed Zelda as an RPG. That's... odd... I reckon, as while you are playing a role, the same can be said for practically every other game ever. Half-Life is an RPG, because you play the role of Gordon Freeman, et cetera et cetera. For reference, I'd say (and Nintendo says) Zelda (in all incarnations) is an Adventure game.

I'm going to go off the proviso that RPG is the "levelling up" genre, where you increase stats through fighting and the like.

1. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (SNES)
2. Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (GBA/GameBoy Player compatible)
3. Chrono Trigger (SNES)
4. Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, assuming you have friends (GCN/GBA - JAP)
5. Planescape: Torment (PC)
6. Final Fantasy Tactics (PSX)
7. Earthbound (SNES)
8. Final Fantasy VI (SNES)
9. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (GBA)
10. System Shock 2 (PC)

Tried to like FFVII and up... played all the FFs since then... what the fuck have they done to the series? Bastards...

msdong
25-11-03, 20:46
Ultima 4 (and series)
Phantasie III (and series)
Fallout 1 (and the rest)

Well, is NC a RPG ?

The storylines, magic systems and overall playability are just untouched.

Breschau
25-11-03, 20:58
Fallout 2
Planescape: Torment
Baldur's Gate 2 (expansion was mediocre at best tho)

for nostalgia, Bloodwych on the amiga (2 player rpg on one machine! talking crabs that you can sell swords to! Insult people by calling them a 'bumblefoot'!). Though I'm reluctant to really consider it an rpg, it's about as close as it got back then.

And the roleplay parts of Arcanum - the combat was a bit dodgy and there were serious balance issues with a lot of the spells and (particularly) the tech, but it was good for the story/theme and the way the player was interacting with the story.

Mana.
The intro music still makes me emotional :P

1. Morrowind
2. Final Fantasy VII
3. Neverwinter Nights (online)
4. Dungeon Siege (I know it can be called action, before cheats it OWNED)

Dungeon Siege (I know it can be called action, before cheats it OWNED)

Yea this was a great game, why did they put cheat codes in it? Kind of lame that you could just cap a character with a cheat and then go online with that character...

Mattimeo
25-11-03, 21:58
1. Final Fantasy Tactics.
2. Chrono Trigger.
3. Final Fantasy 2(4 jp)
4. Lunar (they tie for this spot)
5. Secret of Mana

List list made me realize just how many awsome games square made before they went south.

I have played it. and got cheated out of my 100 jumps the first time (got to 99 then my sister kicked the controller out of the socket, ARGH!)

I like the game, I think it's awsome, but it's nowhere near in my top 5 (or even top 10)

Whoops! I forgot About Super Mario RPG!

It was a decent game :p

Damn. I feel your pain. Getting 100 jumps was a bitch, but it paid off in the end. Mario with Super Suit + Lazy Shell Weapon, and Peach with Lazy Shell Armour made the hell all worthwhile.

And I think the "100 jumps" thing will attest to the fact that it ISN'T a kid's game. No child should ever endure that. It's worse than being beaten with an extension cord. By your dad. And if it's just because it has colours, live a little! FYI my favourite games have bright colours, and a grand total of ZERO murky greys and browns. Does that make me gay?

25-11-03, 23:09
In no particular order

FF6
FF7
FF8
FF9
FF Tactics (but NOT FF10)
Skies of Arcadia
Grandia
Grandia 2
Alundra (The first one, not the crap sequel)
Deus Ex

:p

..................and?

When I play a RPG I want to be casting demonic spells, element based spells, fighting with daggers and swords.

I dont want to be summoning Yoshi and jumping on mushrooms, and getting smiley-faced-starts for a powerup.

Thats why the game was never a top game for me.

How so? Do you still play in a crib with a toy spaceship? No you grew out of it. Do I still play Mario games? No I grew out of it.

How is that sad?

I think the only thing thats really sad is that your favorite game is aimed for ages 5-8.

Good game.

Marx
25-11-03, 23:56
Wow, but you still play video games (which are aimed at kids in general).

YER A GRONEZ UP NO!111

Mumblyfish
25-11-03, 23:57
Because you can't grow out of Mario games. Apart from the odd exception (IE Mario is Missing) they aren't aimed at kids.

I still maintain that Wario WILL fuck you up.

Closeminded? No...I would still be playing Mario like you two if I was closed minded. I can just accept when someones opinions differ from mine.

Both of you have trouble with that.

In no particular order of preference because I loved them all:

Diablo II
Morrowind
Baldurs Gate
System Shock II
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Deus Ex
Thief
Vampire
Archangel

-FN-
26-11-03, 00:21
Baldur's Gate 1
Morrowind
Dungeon Siege

Those I think are true RPGs. Many other good games were listed here (Diablo II, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Theif) but they're really FPS, not RPG. RPGs have skills and classes and you build a character to follow one player path of many. Many of the other games mentioned are just FPS where you get stuff and don't actually improve your character. While yes, you are "playing a role" there is no real character-specific content.

ive got a huge list of games to go and try, but still no one knows how to get a copy of Planescape Torment...:(

Rachius
26-11-03, 08:22
Baldurs Gate 2: SOA
System Shock 2
Deus Ex
Fallout 1
Fallout 2
Baldurs Gate
The Nomad Soul

Neverwinter Nights (Shadows of Undrentide)

Had to put NWN seperate, due to it being a good RPG - but only in certain cases. The SP was slightly disappointing, but there are some very good MP Persistent Worlds.

Diablo II was a good game - but RPG? No. Hack and slash dungeon crawling, nothing more.
