Which operating system?
Is it fully updated?
Have you used any Third Party Virus Scanners? (http://housecall.trendmicro.com/) Or just your own?
If the answer is no to any of these, I suggest you try them.

If it doesn't help, I'd say one of your .dll's was feckered but uhh damned if I know which :/

edit;
Don't do anything to rash btw, there are some people on this forum who are pretty good with operating systems, I'm sure one of them will see this and possibly find something for ya sooner or later...

First goto your start menu, then click RUN.

Type MSCONFIG then click OK.

Now goto the Startup tab on the right end side.. Uncheck anything
that looks suspicious...or better yet..uncheck them all, reboot
and see if the task manager still closes..if it does, you can just
recheck the ones u unchecked since it saves the list.

If you don't solve the problem there, try this...

Go get yourself Spybot - Search & Destroy (http://download.com.com/3000-2144-10194058.html?tag=lst-0-1)

and

Lavasoft AdAware (http://download.com.com/3000-2144-10214379.html?tag=lst-0-1)

Update both with newest reference files for cleaning engine and
do a search on both, chances are you have that Gator adaware
or something else checking for the Task Manager window at timer
intervals and closing them.

Very noobish stuff here, i can make a program close the task manager
in 3 lines of code for visual basic, 6 lines in C++, the problem is
more than likely a "service" or program running on startup.

Good luck

Go to www.bootdisk.com , download a dos bootdisk of some sort, run fdisk and rid yourself of that horrible excuse for an operating system in the cleanest way possible...yes a nice partition delete. Ahh goodbye evil xp.

Then get your hands on windows 2000 and install that instead. It uses half the system resources that XP does, has half the bugs and problems, and runs everything better.

That is, unless you cant live without features like that oh-so-important built in cd burning software that no one uses anyway because its a big piece of shit.

Ya.

Edit - im sure 50+ xp noobs will have alot to say about my post here, but sorry im not gonna dignify any of you with a response... im just gonna laugh at you and your wasted cpu cycles. Im sure Omnituens will also share in this laughter, based on some of the posts ive seen from him ;) .

Don't listen to this garbage, keep the OS.

Also, your problem would also exist on windows 2000 so what
good would it possibly do to follow this crap advise. Win2k and
WinXP both have the same taskmanager meaning this certain
program which is closing it at intervals searches for the task
managers "child" id number and closes it via API. This means on
both OS's the program would perform the job equally...

I do admire the windows 98 and win2k lovers...I rather install linux.

pshhh.

btw. I've used windows 2000 for a year then got me windows xp
pro...best decision i ever made. some of my hardware isn't even
win2k compatible, only xp..like my flash card reader/writter and
HighPoint Raid controller. Also, my pentium 4 isn't utilized properly
by win2k, XP is shipped with the correct drivers so there's no heavy
searching for drivers.

Just my opinion, i've used every OS out there, i've got an account
to microsoft's MSDN archive as well, so i can download all their
products and beta OS releases for a monthly fee...which my friends
professor kindly pays for ;)

(he is allowing it btw..shhh)

This is like people saying windows 98 is better or even linux...

I'd use windows2000 if my hardware worked better running it..

Or even better ..properly.

But still, I have games that don't work in win2k...so I won't bother.

Also, I run a server 24/7 on my xp rig, 2 months later from vacation
and the computer is still running without crashes.

Another win2k noob? :D

edit: that's my last OS battle response btw, my main point of the
posts is that both OS's are for different people with different rigs.

Hehe, I only use my win2000 machine for gaming really....im a unix junky the rest of the time, so im sure thats gonna make you love me even more.

Its all what works for you really, in the past when I tried XP it gave me nothing but problems, and I found my system resources extremely high when compared to Windows 2000. But were talking two different systems and two different people here, so whatever.

This is my last post too, im going to bed....people can argue all day and night about how UNIX HAXORS RULE and WINDOWS 98 IS THE PWN and XP ISNT BUGGY and 2K IS OMG SPOOG and the whole rest of hte bullshit...if it works for you, go with it.

Interesting...it's closing msconfig too..damn..

Try this:

Goto Start menu again, click RUN...type REGEDIT..

navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

remove them all... then check your program startup folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name Here]\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

I looked for processes on downloads.com and found this
http://download.com.com/3000-2094-10145265.html?tag=lst-0-8
If that doesnt work they have tons of other programs.

If nothing else you can find out if anything strange is running on your computer, look up the weird stuff on google.

At this point I'd be making sure my Antivirus software was completely up to date then running a full system scan. I use Norton AntiVirus, but I know people who love Mcafee VirusScan. If that turns up negative then I'd say yes, it's a knackered OS file.

I had the exact same problem and lived with it for ages by Bashing ctrl alt delete several times and using my reflexes to click close ^^.

but when i scanned my comp (after ages) I found i had a total of 9 viruses (jeez) 1 of them was a Spybot Ms blaster 2k

So yeah not very nice eh.

i suggest updating your virus registrys and doing a full scan or if u have lost your subscription download a free trial up 2 date virus scanner :)

doing this has totaly wiped out my Problem so DO IT NOW!!!.

If he has Norton then WinDoctor could find any weird system problems. I've had it fix little shit that nothing else could.

Good idea! It's not part of the NAV package though, it's included with Norton SystemWorks and Norton Utilities. They might be available for a trial download, though. :)

there could be any number of virus/worms/trojans whatever that can cause this

the most common is a spybot that is spread via Kazaa (it makes several copies of itself in your shared directory for others to download

to get rid of it, use safemode,
remove a file called explorer64.exe from c:\windows\system32 and delete it in regedit hkey_current_user/software/microsoft/windows/runonce
and delete all the suspicious files in your shared directory.
(ive had this one personaly, serves me right for still using kazaa even tho its a big heap of shit now)

theres another ive read about that looks like a screensaver
named NBRUTE.SCR
apparently you cant delete the file (im sure theres some way of doing it) its usually hidden, and has a registry entry here:

HKeyLocalMachine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

to get rid of it people have just given it a different name
ie. from NBRUTE.SCR to DELETEME.blah

this probably wont help at all but theyre the ones ive seen the most complaints about

The only problem I have with Win2k is that my hard drive benchmarks are almost half the performance compared to when I ran Win98SE.

It might just be the free benchmark proggie I'm using that doesn't fully support Win2k.
