Lo guys.

I thought that i would take a wee break from NC and explore my old PC games to find ye old favorites.

So far i found Fallout 1 and good old Worms.

As i have played theese till my fingers began to lack skin i would like to ask the community what THEIR favorite old time games are?

My old PC games are:

Apogee ones (classics!), including:

Duke Nukem 1 & 2,
Biomenace,
Commander Keen (!),
Raptor: Call of the Shadows

etc. etc.

An old, weird, classic adventure game called "Dreamweb" by Empire Interactive.

Betrayal at Krondor.

Many by "Epic Megagames".

One Must Fall 2097.

Another even older one that I bet no-one knows: a RPG called "Vampyr: Talisman of Invocation"

And many more that I should mention, but elude me at this late hour :P

EDIT: UFO: Enemy Unknown and Terror From The Deep both scared me shitless in my younger years :P

You guys might want to check this site out:
http://www.the-underdogs.org/

Just scanning through the lists is like a blast from the past. :)

Magic Carpet rocked, and Elite 3 was good (after the bugs were fixed).

Gonna have to dig out an old P233 to play them on though, 'cos they don't run properly if at all on modern computers.

Elite roxxor'd, (C64).

Paradroid, (also C64). If you remember this game, part of it isn't too disimilar to the hack screens in our dear Neocron, when you took control of your next robot. Class.

1942, (the overhead plane game).

Total Annihilation. Doom, too.

Don't know if some people count that as old but I got TA years ago and played Doom aroun the same time; being the "young 'un" that I supposedly am I call it old. ;)

I've been playing games a *very* long time, so I won't bore you with a humungous list ... just a few highlights ;)

Planescape : Torment - Best storyline/atmosphere *ever*.

Unreal Tournament : Got an *ahem* unofficial download 3 weeks before release, had to buy it 3 times eventually due to scratched CD's, new installs on new PCs, lost discs etc...
Was still playing it on the day they finally switched off the stat logging servers 3 years later.
(For officially logged games only - 6,500 matches, 122,000 minutes [85 *days* eek ], 71,000 frags : 11,500 deaths - 18,000 of the kills were headshots. And people wonder why I am a sniper in NC :D)
Even made some money and got some free (sponsored) travel out of tournaments :D

Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy: Aaaah - Infocom text adventures. Great days.

Sensible Soccer/Speedball 2 : Spent uncountable hours wearing my thumbs to stumps playing my housemates at these after getting back from the pub.

That'll do for now - getting all misty eyed reminiscing. lol

Damn I always wanted the full version of Constructor
Also I'd say (with so little time, back to work damnit, adding more later)

*Cosmos Comsic Adventure damnit! It rocked when I was a kiddo
(First experience with shareware btw, damn I hated that)

*Chaos Overlords. Hardcore strategy at it's fineset

*Syndicate: American Revolt. Now THAT was hard shit. BUT, I made it *bwahaha*

*Commander Keen 1-6. Kiddo, a 33MhZ and too much time in school, what to do what to do

*It came from the desert. *sniffles* Oh sweet amiga days.
Still revive it at times with the emulator, get pissed of the sucky rip, back to NC

*Gazillionaire. Bwhaha I own the universe! Damn I loved playing this game with my friends.

*Sam & Max: Hit the road. My first real adventure game, aaaw so sweet memories and so many laughs

*X-com: Terror from the deep (And UFO too). Another fine hardcore strategy (only to be played on Superhuman)

*One Must Fall 2097. Jaguar still owns every damn char in the game. 'cept for shadow, of course

*Total Annihilation. Love! Soooo many troops. Soooo BIG wars! Bring it on!

*Planescape: Torment. This game is WACKED but so damn cool.
Also where my PPU got the word "deader" from. Damn Mort is rock hard.

*Pirates! Gold. Loved the combo of RP, strategy and FIGHT

*Colonization. First REAL strategy I went into and whooped.
(took time but yeah I made it.)

*Mystic Towers. *sniffles* Oh sweet C64. Still revives this oldie too.

*Wacky Wheels. First REALLY kewl multiplayer game I played.

*Grand Theft Auto. Aaah freedom.

*Ultima IIX. Damn I actually hated this game cuz it was so damn hard and my english sucked. But it's the first REAL RPG so..

*Dune 2 (and 2k)
Nuff said

*Shadowlands
First real hardcore RPG I finished off

*Rygar
Opinions on this one anyone?

*Heroes of might and magic 3. Now this is what I've spent my nights with friends on until we all just sat there like zombies sleeping with our eyes open

*Lords of the Realm II. So many bugs so kewl game.

It was an Atari game called Supremacy. You terraformed planets, built some mining/farming/whatever structures on them, trained guys and sent them off to defeat the CPU opponent. :)

Ah, 16-bit nostalgia... Carrier Command and Supremacy were awesome. Civ, of course, needs no comments other than ":0". DM was THE daddy, and though I never played Millennium 2.2 it's follow-up, Deuteros, I still come back to from time to time on WinUAE. :D

Going back more than 6 or 7 years or so there simply aren't that many good PC games - all the major talent was still writing primarily for Amiga/Atari etc.

Ahhh, you did not play TfTD much did you? The Blaster missile WAS in there. although slightly less effective.

Best tacktic ever that was:

1.Form up Blaster line IN dropship (sitting 1st line and standing behind it 2nd line)
2.Unload troopers in heavy armor around dropship.
3.Nuke the shit out of the ENTIRE level by bombing every house or area.
4.close dropship
5.Takeoff and call in the cleaners to collect still identifiable alien parts for FURTHER autopsy.

Ah! There IS someone else who remembers this classic with equal fondness. Gr8 game. Spent far too many hours glued to a 14" tv in my m8s room playing this game.

On reflection, X-Com was and still is a highly addictive game. I have it in the box and it's sat in front of me, although I haven't played it for a few years now :(

I got an ST-E when my ST-FM was getting a bit too old to handle the games. It was also my first encounter with dismantling two computers in order to fix one, since I was going through my childish "hit the computer" phase when I lost games at games at the time and managed to nuke the floppy drive on the ST-E. :)

Managed to complete the entire thing 1-Up without using an umbrella back on the Amstrad CPC-464. That was about the time I decided to see if Gauntlet really was endless. After a week's play I gave up at level 523. :D

Yeah, I did the same thing, but I used four 2-man teams to spot for the 4 artillery pieces, and made sure at least 2 of the Blaster troops were heavily Psionic so I could Mind Control enemy troops and use THEM to scout! :D
The Blaster was a good way of making an doorway where the aliens didn't expect one. :D

PC is comparitively recent in my gaming life, so most 'old' games were on the amiga or spectrum for me.

The ones I can remember (many of which I only remembered cos this thread reminded me, heh):

Chaos
Laser Squad (both done, if memory serves, by the brothers that were responsible for UFO: Enemy Unknown)
UFO: Enemy Unknown :p
Speedball 2
Bloodwych ("Thou art a smelly bumblefoot" "Maybe so, but thou shouldst be so lucky")
Monkey Island
Elite
Robosport
Sim City (never really took to the sequels)
The Bards Tale
Turrican (just cos of my 11-year-old-awe at the digitised speech after years of the spectrum)
Ghostbusters (just cos of amusement remembering the 'He slimed me' speech on the spectrum.. the music too :p)
Dungeon Master
Pool of Radiance
Bruce Lee (forget if it had a sub-title)
Syndicate
Sabre Wulf (first game I played using a joystick instead of keyboard)
Paradroid (first time I played I had NO clue what was going on.. played a year or two later and it was pretty easy - this was on an Amstrad I think...)
Jet Set Willy (actually a bit crap, but nostalgia and all that)
Dragon's Breath (I think that's what it was called.. brewed potions and fed them to your dragons to try and enhance them so they could go burn down villages and stuff.. multiplayer too)
Renegade
Space Harrier

and of course, the source of my NC character's name:
Hired Guns

Just a repeat of what everyone's just said, but I can't sleep safe at night without mentioning:

Baldur's Gate 1 (and 2): probably the first "real" RPG I played, and completed, and played again. And I still love it to bits.

All the monkey islands were truely classics, and ripped my sides. Them guys at Lucasarts sure are funny :)

I really should dig up Pool of Radiance and/or Planescape: Torment - even though they are a tad old, or maybe the new NWN mod.
I didn't think NWN was as good as it was cracked up to be, SP wise, as good as BG1 and 2 at least. And the reviews put me off PoR, as well as Arcanum. Grr.

The following disregard gfx.. ie. based only on gameplay (and in no particular order).

1) Stunt car racer (best driving game in history of mankind)

2) Blood money (best scrolling shoot'em up ever made)

3) Speedball 2 (best brutal sport game)

4) Impossimole (Not sure about the spelling, but it was a cool platform game)

5) Pirates

(played so much I could identify any part of the world by one piece of a treasure map.. handy for rescuing relatives and then loads of money!)

5b) Pirates gold (as good as the ST version, but with a slightly better interface and SVGA gfx)

6) Dungeon Master (best ever dungeon crawling game)

7) Half-life/Doom 2/Duke Nukem 3D (hard to split these three - Best 3D FPS games)

8) Joust (fantasic multiplayer game)

9) PANG (addictive)

10) Rogue Trooper (can't beat a blue super soldier) :D

11) -"Can't remember the name.. maybe was Soldier. Whatever it was called, it was amazing for it's time.

An absolutely amazing 3D game on the ST. You were a soldier and could pilot/drive all kinds of vehicles. Surfboards/rowing boats/ tanks/helicopters/hovercraft, etc, etc., great range of weapons to use. Ability to disguise yourself as an enemy [by putting a red uniform on].

You start off in an area near a bull and an enemy soldier you are "supposed" to contact. (iirc you could get the enemy uniform off him.)

I seem to remember always surfing westwards from the start location, to an island that had a hovercraft on it 8) Avoiding the nasty shark, of course.

The game also involved taking to a few people who lived in tepees, before finally killing the enemy general in his bunker

Other mentions (that I can remember)

amstrad (I think)- Chuckie Egg

st- Strider

st- Cannon Fodder

st- Disc (the game in Tron)

st- supercars 2

pc- Diablo

pc- warcraft 2/Starcraft

pc- hyperblade

2600- "Lots of games on the Atari 2600"

st- Bubble Bobble (and other, very similar games)

st- Barbarian

st- Nightbreed

st- Prince of Persia

pc- Lemmings

pc- Worms

st- Panzer Kick boxing (needed 1 Mb to customise your fighter's moves)

st- Stealth Fighter F-19 (think that's the right name.. Only flight sim game I've ever enjoyed)

Anyways... Where has all the gameplay gone? (Apart from the fact my ST blew up)

[edit] Two more mentions after being reminded in this thread.

1) Sensible Soccer. The only football game I really liked (plus, I scored a goal from behind the half way line. The bounce caught the keeper off guard) :D

2) Blood (equal to the other 3 games I mentioned, but much more amusing and bloody)

[/end edit]

[edit 2] Great ones for breaking your joysticks

1) Summer olympics
2) Winter olympics

"4) Impossimole (Not sure about the spelling, but it was a cool platform game)"

I think it was Mission Impossamole. Starring monty the mole
Nice platform game

"5) Pirates

I hope you meant the trick to get 1/4 of the map each time and digging up the 250000 gold treasure 4 times. At least I did

Will someone PLEASE contact the guys from X-com to get us a new X-com. They should be reading this

Game music for download, for that EXTRA nostalgic feel. Could not find the Megalomania speeches though. What I did find was this. Will interest some of you no doubt

http://www.gamesdomain.com/e32000/whatever_happened_to_sensible_software.html

These guys now work for Codemasters. Codemaster did buy the rights for all their games. So let's hope they re-release it.

http://amigos.amiga.hu/ancientoys/screenshots/megalomania2.jpg

Why is is that it always look crappier than how you remember it. Graphically I mean.

Another thing: why is there not some petition-site to get these games re-released?
Some games are already sceduled fo rerelease (Defender of the Crown and Speedball for example) but we can ask for more. Most of those guys from back then are still in business. Especially Codemasters and the guys from X-com

?.. I don't know what trick you are talking about.

I could simply recognise any part of the world map by a single reef/piece of land.

That meant I only ever needed to have one piece of a map to find anything.

ie. you get a bit of a map.. go and rescue a relative.. they give you a bit of a different map (for the treasure).. and you promtly recognise the location and go and get it. :D

As for the X-com, I'm sure "Laser Squad Nemesis" is still going (since it was roughly released a year ago).. and.. oh look, it was made by the same guys.

Of course, it's based on lasersquad, not X-com.

I played it for a few months after it's release, but got tired of playing an unfinished product + listening to the jerkoffs in the community (http://www.lasersquadnemesis.com/)

[edit] Bob696 is a really nice guy though [/end edit]

Ahhh.. Meglomania.. Good game.. (very easy though).

However, it reminds me that I forgot "Populous 2", which we had lots of fun playing multiplayer (using a serial cable). :)

[edit 2] ooh. I just searched for "Medway boys" and found a few things (ah.. loverly compilations by many groups)

1) it was "Impossamole"

2) "Rick Dangerous" .. .. Excellent game.

More games I liked:

-Return of the Jedi
-IK Karate+
-Solomons key ;)
-Elf
-Rogue
-Defender of the Crown
-Oids (make your own lvls and kill or save little stick men)
-Dynamite Dux (though not really)
-Postman Pat (the swaying van and music kicked arse)
-The Untouchables
-Hong Kong Phooey
-Jimmy White's Snooker
-Tired now.

judging from your reply you knew the trick, but maybe you did not see it as one. The idea in pirates was that there was 1 big treasure and you would need all 4 map pieces to find it. yet if you found it with one piece it would reset. and a new treausere would be on the second piece. so in the end you found 4 treasures instead of the intended 1

and i knew about laser squad. but i am waiting for an x-com one

Any old LucasArts Adventure Game

Monkey Islands
Sam'n'Max
Maniac Mansion and DOTT (tentacles rox)

And another classic adventure:

Beneath A STEEL Sky (freeware nowadays)

Of course there are a lot of other games, but adventures are my favorite.

System Shock rox tho. :)

DOOM and DOOM 2 are my first loves ever.

Duke Nukem 3D : I used to do custom DM maps in this game.

Half Life: Opposing Forces, Counter-Strike, . . . . Basically played at least 75% of the mods for this one.....

Wolfenstein 3D

A really old but good (and very rare/obscure) game is Maelstrom for the PC, not the Mac. It is a great strategy game. I loves it.

X-Wing for DOS... good ole days....

Dark Forces mmmmmm pixely goodness.

Descent 1 & 2. My first "flight sim" so to speak.

EDIT: OMG I forgot MONKEY ISLAND! How the hell did I do that? My favorite strategy/adventure games ever ever ever.....

Oh and Loom and Indiana Jones were good Lucas games too.

I don't really class this as a trick. (If there was only supposed to be one lot of treasure, then meh.. I dunno.)

On the versions I played, you got a max of one lot of treasure per relative you rescued.

If you'd found the treasure, then the next relative would show you where another lot of treaure was... and the location in the world was always different.

Each lot of treasure was only, iirc, 100000 gold (though possibly not).

Also, considering it worked on the pirates gold pc version I doubt the coders thought it was a "trick".

The only trick is to accidentally kill off most of your crew just before you retire. ;)

But what I am missing here is WHAT eaxctly makes the games you pick so great? Playability? This and that feature? atmosphere?sounds? etc
