If you must use a software firewall, try Zone Alarm.

I think it's www.zonelabs.com (http://www.zonelabs.com) but I might be wrong...

Sygate Personal Firewall (http://smb.sygate.com/support/documents/spf/default.htm) is free und decent to use.

Go on cnet.com and search for kerio

You want the second to latest one, the latest one isnt as simple to use as its previous version.... and it's fully free unless it;s for commercial use.

I use Sygate. Not bad. Asks for programs to access and such... keeps an eye on ports.... incomming/outgoing connections. I like it.

Zonealarm's pro version doesn't differ a whole lot from the free version. I used to use the free version and no hardware firewall and it kept all the baddies out just fine.

Now I use a hardware firewall with ZA built into it along with ZA pro on all the network's computers. I know no security is perfect, but mine is pretty damn close.

I'll agree with LTA on this and go with Kerio Personal Firewall. I've used it since the port 135 virus came out and it's worked flawless for me (as a matter of fact, I just checked my log and noticed 4 more hits on my 135 port from my local wireless network).

I do have to warn you though about zone alarm. if you have XP AND you have other accounts that have limited user rights, you should make sure that all other accounts are logged off before you log on to a limited user account. Zone Alarm will cause your computer to not be able to access the internet on the limited user account if you have an admin account logged in at the same time on the same computer. Also when the limited user does try to log off, the system will hang and you will be forced to re-boot your computer.

But if you only have one account on the computer, Zone Alarm is a good choice as are the others.

If you feel ambitious and you have a spare computer and 2 ethernet cards you can program your own firewall with linux that will allow you to use that computer as a dedicated firewall and usually thats even more secure (if programmed correctly) than having a firewall running on the same computer that you are using to do other stuff on. Of course you'll need alot of caffene and patience to get it working.

Here are some links that might give you a start on creating a linux firewall, if you're interested.

Go to
http://www.agnitum.com

and download Outpost Free.
It is free for personal use, does, however not support Internet Connection Sharing if you have a LAN at home (for this feature you would need to buy Outpost Pro).
Outpost is very flexible with Rules, you can allow/deny single ports for an application or decide that you totally trust it (or of yourse, that you do not trust it at all).
Outpost also watches your exe files, so say you allow program abc.exe to access internet and some virus changes abc.exe and wants to send your love letters all over the world. Outpost notices that abc.exe has changed and asks for new permissions.
It also features an ad blocker, popup filter etc etc.
Did I mention it's free?

for a nice free hardware firewall based on Linux (but no linux knowledge required), try Smoothwall (http://www.smoothwall.org/).

Try www.tinysoftware.com and download tiny personal firewll 5.0

Its quite an advanced one though (a LOT more complicated than zonealarm etc), it blocks EVERYTHING until you allow it, including offline programs :p

Get ZoneAlarm pro and use tricks that can't be discussed here.

Yeah if you've got another machine and you're not dumb like a tree, I'd recommend Coyote Linux as well. It's what we use at our Game Club for LANs. Works great.
