Sword Styles

Fencing, linear european derived swordplay
Kendo (think samurai)
Iaido (i think me memory is bad) emphasizes drawing a katana quickly and efficiently.
Theres a chinese one but I can't recall the name...

Tai Chi, later disciplines of it involve chinese swords

Ninjitsu (which I'm sure everyone here would want to take) which... well shit why would I need to explain this? everyone here knows what weapons ninjas learn to use. It might be hard to find a dojo that teaches it in the US... there are books about it tho...
I betchya there's more types but I'm not immediately aware of them.

I would don a ninja outfit but I've no digital camera... I do have a scanner - then you could see my blinded eye and maybe nothing else... so I won't bother.

If you just want to learn basic western swordplay, your local chapter of the SCA would be more than happy to indoctrinate you. Or you could look around for a local chapter of HACA, the Historical Armed Combat Association.

Oriental swordfighting differs from Occidental swordfighting mainly in that (in my eyes) Oriental swordplay was based on one fast devastating killing blow (because their armor was shite), while Western schools have to probe for weak points and often wear their opponent down.

It's all what you're interested in. Personally, I'd take my plate and chain armor and a heater shield over lacquered armor and a katana anytime...

Reverse Blade Swords were used by people who had no interest in killing.
Reverse blade swords could still do a great deal of damage, but generally they were defencive weapons.
Tend to require superior skill to handle too.
