I've been looking for a good offline, yet on the computer, text based RPG (Possibly with small graphics, but no animation of course), for the last 2 days and I can't find any anywhere.

Anyone know of any good ones? Preferably medieval time based?

Ancient Domains of Mystery! It's one of the best games I've ever played. Make it through in 2 months without any hints or tips and I'll pay you 1000€ :p

Just search for "The Lost Treasures of Infocom"

You'll find all sorts of downloadable offline text-based RPGs

The Hitch Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy - this was the first text-based RPG that I ever played, back when I got my Commodore64. Spent hours playin it. It's tricky and funny. Java version here, no download. (http://www.douglasadams.com/creations/infocomjava.html)

Theres shitloads of old ones here (http://tacgr.emuunlim.com/downloads/downloads.php?sorttype=alpha&sortorder=a)...
You'll need to DL an emulator (http://tacgr.emuunlim.com/emulators/emulators.php) for DOS or some other OS's (C64, Tandy, etc) but some of these old games are still pretty fun.
I'm lookin for a bookmark for a site I knew that had over 100 of these old text based games, converted to Java (ran in your browser, no DL) but I think that's on one of my old computers. Site's prolly dead anyways.

Some other good (possibly better) emu sites:

You might try one of the various flavors of Rouge, like:

www.nethack.org (http://www.nethack.org/)

or you could try www.zangband.org (http://www.zangband.org)

There are a lot of other ones out there.

Hours of fun and usually enough randomness between the different runs to be entertaining.

Try the Silicon Dreams Trilogy by Level 9 Computing. The Underdogs (http://www.the-underdogs.org) is a good place to find that kind of stuff.

Fighting Fantasy, Steve Jackons, yeah, I had every single one of those books, and all the creature books so you could make your own.

My favourite was Rebel something something, set in the distant future. Fucking brilliant.

I really enjoyed Deathtrap Dungeon too, although it became linear faster than most of the other books.

The Hitch Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy - this was the first text-based RPG that I ever played, back when I got my Commodore64. Spent hours playin it. It's tricky and funny.

Took me ages to figure out how to stop that bastard Ford from running off.

Dont have many text adventures i remember, but i used to love beyond zork :p

Not text based but the daddy of all rpgs was the dungeon master series. You get a group of four adventurers who you get to choose, get equipment for, attack enemies, use magic/melee and level up etc. Really fun and can be scary at times :) When i was young i used to play dm during the night with my friends. Was great fun! There were lots of dungeon master clones about like elvira and eotb.

You might still be able to buy the pc versions of it somewhere for real cheap, maybe it has even gone abandonware by now. If all else fails im 100% sure you will be able to get a ROM of it for another platform.

The old OLD Zork games will do ya good :) unfortunately a bit difficult to find though. I remember standing at the bottom of a endless staircase and running into grues after trying to swim through a lake that ended up dousing my lantern.

Also Dungeon Master is fun - I remember playing that some time ago (actually I have the cd right here) It managed to freak me out at times. Not sure if I'd be able to get it to work anymore.

Anyone remember a game called ' Behind Closed Doors' ?

It was a text based game on the Spectrum. I swear, I never, ever, ever managed to figure out how to get out of that damn toilet cubicle.

Shit. That drove me insane.
