Hi. I have Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Ninja Scroll, Perfect Blue, Blood - The Last Vampire, and metropolis. MY favoraites are Akira and Perfect Blue, although I like them all. Can anybody reccomend somthing to me? I am not a fan of collecting series very much but if it's great I don't mind. I only post this here because I remember a thread about Manga a month or so ago and I have just got into it. I am trying to discover some cool DVD's.

Thanks.
:)

Semi-short series that are really worth the effort:
Evangelion(English or Jap)
Nadesico(English)
Serial Experiments Lain(Jap - Haven't seen english myself)
Cowboy Bebop(Jap - english is terrible in comparison).

filmage?
Macross Plus(Must See! English or Jap)
Princess Mononoke(English)
Luputia(Spelling): Castle in the Sky.

Hmm.... :p

For Christ sake, watch a subbed copy. Do not go near a Dubbed one.

English (I should really say "American" though, to be honest) "versions" of Anime are piss-poor at best, beset with inferio acting, shoddy editing and even worse translation.

The dialogue tends to be butchered at every possible place as well.

Must say this is most true..

Half of the voices just don't fit the people, like you get a fat woman, sounding like an old man.. terible some of them..

Ghost in the shell is good.. I'd recomend others, but can't rember their names.

MD-Geist, I thought they where funny..
Black jack, or was it jack black, pretty good, but the plots not the easyest to follow.

The voice acting on Perfect Blue and Akira was good too I thought.

I'd give Trigun a try, along with Evangelion (be prepared to think though...) and Cowboy Bebop. If you do watch Cowboy Bebop, don't forget to watch the movie, "Knockin' on Heaven's Door." It's pretty good. It comes between some episode 22 and 23 I think.

Spirited Away
Princess Mononoke
Castle in the Sky
My Neighbor Totoro
Akira
Fatal Fury 1 and 2
Ghost in the Shell Special Edition

Ranma movies 1 and 2 (VHS)

Ranma 1/2 seasons 1-3 on DVD, entire released series on VHS
Sailor Moon, fan subbed to episode 300 (almost 100 tapes!)
Jojo's bizarre adventure eps 1-10
Boggiepop Phantom First 2 dvds
Magic Users Club entire series
Trigun entire series
Tenchi In tokyo
Tenchi universe
Cowboy Bebop, entire series
Black heaven, entire series

I have more, but I'm not at home right now, when I get home I'll take a picture of all of it. BTW, and one here that's an anime fan and goes to otakon, I'm on staff, and would be happy to get Neocron fans in with an accociates badge, drop me a line.

Edit: Oh yeah, I forgot, gunsmith cats and one piece, but I watch those all the time so I forget to mention them ;)

Pity Rurouni Kenshin isn't short, he'd love it, i can tell from some of the posts he's made in the past....heh

Helen - although your point about the English vs Jap thing is mostly true...

Jap Nadesico Vs English Nadesico = English wins by a VERY LONG way, Ruri is so well acted out in the English version, in the Jap version she sounds FAR to innocent when you consider all the flavour and tone that played a large part in making the series so famous in the english-speaking part of the industry.

Most other things I suggest watching in in english, is either because the dub is very good, or because the sub requires far too much effort for your non-fanatical anime fan.

I consider a lot more than just Seiyuu Quality :p

PsycheBlade
31-08-03, 00:41
Short/Movie
Gunsmith Cats
FoolyCooly (or FlCl)
Lodoss Wars
Princess Mononoke

Series
Excel Saga
Lain
Gundam SEED
Noir
Betterman

...I'd suggest more but my memory is piss poor and my collection is odd compared to others.

On sub vs dub - on occasion producers release a good dub, and sometimes a sub can be bland. <- both of those are rare occasions. As said by others sometimes the voices to match the character at all. Though if you don't want to be bothered with reading so you can watch the art/animation go dub, (or learn japanese ^o^). Otherwise subs tend to be better.

Manga / Anime Rocks even some of the less action orientated ones are impressive, cant remember the name of hand, but i saw one recently about japans first attempts to go into space (obvioulsy sexed up a lot) the space force, loads of serious stuff, but at the same time Loads of offbeat jokes and hilarious things were happening.

Remember anime doesnt have to be violent or pornographic (ala Urotsokidoji), strangely the robo tech series was quite gripping for me, but of course, no anime comes close to transformers the original series, starscream i wubb wouuuuu.

just a little FYI by the way: Manga is a form of japanese comic in black and white, read, and printed from right to left, like most japanese books.

I've had a million people tell me FLCL is so great, but I watched it on CN, and didn't get it, I hear it was butchered pretty bad, but I don't think you can kill the entire feel of the show, and the show felt...slapped together.

And really, really short, I mean, sure GSC is shprt, but thats more like a movie anyway.

I also forgot in my list Macross plus, but thats loaned out ;).

Can anyone explain FLCL to me? I want to like it, all my friends do...(then again, that same thing is true for DBZ, and I hate that)

Get something in the UC Gundam universe. The Alternate Universe Gundam series (Wing, Turn-A, etc.) are ok, but UC's where it's at if you want real Gundam. 08th MS team and 0083 Stardust Memory are both good, short series (13 episodes or so each) with updated graphics as compared to the original. Char's Counterattack is a good movie (2 hrs or so). There are also some longer TV series, but I'm not positive as to which are "best" as I've neverr seen one through to the end. I think the last one I watched was ZZ.

Given a choice between Neon Genesis Evangelion and RahXephon, I'd choose RahXephon. NGE's protagonist, Shinji, gets on most people's nerves (if you look up "wuss" in the dictionary, you'll see his picture). If you want to watch NGE without having to end the series on an cerebral note, watch up to Episode 22, then pop in End of Evangelion. EoE is a drop-in replacement for Episodes 23-24.

Gasaraki's a good series, but the middle is cerebral and slooooow. If you can deal with that, the animation's good and the plot is decent. It's artificially-created mecha based off organic mecha is NGE-ish, but the use of such devices to re-recreate the past's greatness, not push forward, is what drives the series.

Full Metal Panic goes a little super-deformed bonkers at the beginning (especially the two episodes after the first serious plotline ends), but becomes serious in the second half. ADV's verision has a great transfer and the bootleg from meganimeondvd has decent subtitling.

For an oldie but a goodie, Bubblegum Crisis is a good eight-part series with an excellent soundtrack. I like how the plans-within-plans plot evolves. However, Crash, the three-part follow up, is awful. Skip Crash. BGC 2040 is ok, but I prefer the original's characters. Sign of the times, I guess.

Ah My Goddess/Oh My Goddess is a good short series (5 episodes), and the movie's good, too. Short comedy/romance, so you don't get weighed down with episode after episode.

Dual is a good short series as well - it's what happens when Tenchi Muyo meets Gundam, essentially. Comedy/drama. I like how laid back the "commanders" are on each side.

I've read a couple reviews of Mahoromatic. Some like it, some think it's a letdown compared to other Gainax works. I personally like it as I like the characters. There is a bit of "fanservice" supposedly, but I think it's tasteful and suits the characters, not forced.

Read Or Die's a great three-parter. Animation's crisp and The Paper is a great character - I've never seen a giant paper airplane outclass a fleet of Apache helicopters before. :-)

I like Blue Submarine No. 6, but I want to smack the moron that put one episode PER SIDE of a disc. At least with the Japanese version of FuriKuri (FLCL), they put all six episodes on separate discs. Blue Submarine puts two on a disc, one on each side. I'm working on getting it moved over to two DVD-Rs, two episodes per disc, as I want to watch it again but don't want to have to get up or buy a double-sided DVD player. It's a short four-part series where Earth is slowly being converted to an almost entirely water-bound planet. Transfer's great - the colors are excellent.

eX Driver is a short six-part series. It's fun - somewhat odd, but fun (seriously, who would live in a world where cars drive themselves?). Characters are good looking and the cars are excellent.

Just started watching Heat Guy J. Right now it's all flash, not much substance. I'm waiting to see how volume 2 does. It's a little too shallow right now, and I've seen too many similarities to Manhattan to disregard how the main city is NOT called Manhattan or New York City...

Najica Blitz Tactics, I was hoping, would be something in the Noir vein. While the story's ok so far, it's ALL fanservice. The "camera" is mounted at knee or ankle level virtually all the time. If you like cotton panties, this is the series for you (don't ask me, I don't understand the fascination, personally). I'm hoping there's more story developement in volume 2. I'll keep watching as I've seen more than one series pull a rabbit out of a hat in volume 2.

Noir (26 eps) is excellent, if you can withstand the lack of blood and the sometimes slow-moving plot. It's Lain-esque in this regard. I like the setting, though (old world Europe in present day, for the most part). People either love it or hate it, apparently.

Lain's cerebral, but the transfer and animation are excellent. The story and concept are cool, but it's slow moving (even if it is only 13 episods). It's not something you watch to stay awake, though. :-)

.hack//SIGN (26 eps) is slow moving, but I like the animation, artwork, and the concept is a turn on MMOs. It revolves around a globally-played MMORPG where one of the main characters is trapped inside the game world. It's a good thing the worldservers never fail. :-) The series ties into a set of games on the PS2 and the box sets all include soundtrack CDs so far. Nice setup overall.

Buy Cowboy Bebop, 'nuff said about that one already.

Escaflone (26 eps) is good. I've watched the series more than once. It's a good drama with excellent settings and a nice twist on both the mecha and parallel universe concept. I have yet to watch the movie based on the series, though.

The Big O is a good, short series (so far)with 12 or 14 episodes for season 1. The art is unlike anything I've seen before and the story has a cool premise (everyone woke up one day with anmesia). I haven't had a chance to finish it up yet. Probably do that this week, though.

There's more in my collection, but this should do for now.

I'm aware. The Japanese version's episodes were all subtitled in English except for the first episode. I'm not surprised they went to a two episode-per-disc format, as the originals cost approximately $30 USD per disc/episode.

X-men the animated series (the old fox one) is the best.

It doesn't feature characters with eyes the size of half their fucking face, cutesy humor that isnt funny, or talking animals.

It's artificially-created mecha based off organic mecha is NGE-ish, but the use of such devices to re-recreate the past's greatness, not push forward, is what drives the series.

I didnt really like the two main characters much, but loved the mecha alot to continue watching/buying it.

Full Metal Panic goes a little super-deformed bonkers at the beginning (especially the two episodes after the first serious plotline ends), but becomes serious in the second half. ADV's verision has a great transfer and the bootleg from meganimeondvd has decent subtitling.

Parts of it were fun, and really liked the story just after half-way in the series. Season 2 just started airing in Japan, starts very similar to the first season.

Read Or Die's a great three-parter. Animation's crisp and The Paper is a great character - I've never seen a giant paper airplane outclass a fleet of Apache helicopters before. :-)

Very nice show, was planning on buying it on DVD but havent gotten around to it. Second series of its coming soon.

.hack//SIGN (26 eps) is slow moving, but I like the animation, artwork, and the concept is a turn on MMOs. It revolves around a globally-played MMORPG where one of the main characters is trapped inside the game world. It's a good thing the worldservers never fail. :-) The series ties into a set of games on the PS2 and the box sets all include soundtrack CDs so far. Nice setup overall.

Really nice animation and music...but the story really dragged alot and didnt really got anywhere... same things seems to keep happening over and over but did watch it to the end just to find out what happens.

Some other series ive liked/collected over the past few years:

Scryed, sorta mecha show with really interesting characters have control over matter and "alter" it into tools/mechas etc.. One of my recent favorites.

Patlabor, police mecha show long series with tv, 2 OVA's and 3 movies. One of my all time favorites. The Minipato ova's are damn funny :)

SDF Macross/Macross Plus, the two series that got me into watching anime. Very good stuff. Ignour that Robotech crap ;p

Others that i dont feel like typing tuff up for :)

Aquarian Age
Guu
Jin-Roh
Trigun
Juuni Kokki

Well, it IS set in an MMORPG. What did you expect? :-)

It seems to be moving to me, though. I'm on discs 3 and 4's on the way. It moves, just a lot slower than most other series. It likes to stop and stiff ALL the roses.

Glad to see that FMP didn't end at episode 24.

Joo joo.. Naruto and gundam seed is download only, but because it's not licensed.. hmm well gundam is now. It's all "legal" to distribute until it gets licensed in your region.

But I live in lameass Sweden so we wont see any licensed anime here ever I guess, and if we do I wont tuch that release with 20 pairs of surgical gloves, bloated with swedish/finnish/danish/english/german/french/norwegan/spanish subtitles, like 5 diff dub audio tracks and fucked up non english menus is not exactly what I want to put my money on. The more unnessecary bloat on cd's the less goodies to enjoy :(. Japanese speach engelish subs, how hard can it be.. Hmm gonna quit me whineing right about now..

Cant wait til Naruto gets released on a big ass mega box only for me :). But I guess that will not happen any time soon, cause the Manga is like 190 chapters so far I think and like 20 or 21 volumes and still going strong, just hope Masashi Kishimoto doesn't slack off but continues to do Naruto the way it has been so far.

Heavent read the Manga more than up to the point where the anime is, do not want to spoil any gaara fights...

mmmmm the nice postman just dropped Kite directors cut and Jin-roh collectors edition down my mailbox right now.. Oh, Oh Joy..

That also means you never have to worry about breaking the law when you download anime.

If anime isn't liscened in your country, you can do whatever you want with fansubs of it :p
