I want to take on the daring task of building my own PC. Up untill now I have only upgraded most of my parts, but I want to build from scratch.

Can anybody help me find a good link to some cheap components? It has to be in the UK. Many many thanks to Y'all.

www.planetmicro.co.uk
www.microdirect.co.uk
www.overclockers.co.uk (never used, but look good and have a great reputation)

when you build it, get a Nforce2 chipset motherboard for gaming (gigabyte do the best one), 2 sticks of pc3200 DDR matched and a Barton Core AMD cpu 2500+ and upwards. I just built a pc for a mate, and after much much research using websites went on this setup. (but its upto you, this was for gaming and quality sound at a cheap price)

www.tomshardware.com gives reviews on components. Use this before buying to feel that you are getting the right bits.

I am stumped.
How do I know what motherboard to buy? Whats a good brand for AMD and Where does it say how far it upgrades to? All it gives me is the BUS speed.

Thanks a lot for your help guys, it's much cheaper than the place I was looking at before. Local shop. =)

Budget wise I don't really care so much, and it's for games.

I have a Gforce 3 128mb DDR which should do me fine.
I have good drives.
And I might get another 512ddr chip (i have 1 512ddr atm)
I am upgrading my 1.2 duron though,
And I want to get a new motherboard.

EDIT: how far can a motherboard upgrade to? Thats all I really care about, motherboard upgradability.

Motherboard : Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro nForce2 Ultra /MCP-T 8xAGP skt A ATA +LAN +6 ch.audio +USB2 [up to DDR 400] ATX

DDR as u probably know runs at different speeds. You want PC3200 ram its really important u get this. You need 2 sticks of this and it needs to be 'matched' (they understand this term).

The ram you have you will need to sell, DONT try to get a stick of pc3200 and use them together. Acceleration only kicks in if the 2 sticks are 'matched'. 1 stick of say pc3200 512 wont work, you need 2.

AMD _Barton Core_ (not thoroughbred bs) 2500 CPU is good value for money. Must be Barton Core.

Youll need a new power supply and get yourself a nice case from overclockers.

get that and youll have a great plaform in imo.

Delivery is a little slow as they are in Norway for some reason but they are cheaper than any UK site.

Dabs.com (http://www.dabs.com)

though if you really havent a clue about what type of computer to build. maybe you should just think about a pre-made job instead.

if your getting new ram get it from.

Crucial (http://www.crucial.com/uk/index.asp)

good thing about that site. you can just tell it your mobo name and it'll say what ram you need.

What power supply is good? I'm looking at Globalwin Super Silent because of its quite fan, but there are three models. Is that just power output? How much do I need? PC's are soo confusing.

By the way Overclockers seem to have the best selection of products, but I like Microdirect for prices. Man some of the cases they have over at overclockers are just amazing!

*edit* looking at crucial now

Gigabyte board will go to the highest AMD XP processor on the market. microdirect and planet micro are great, used them loads. Crucial ram is great....for overclockers, hence wy its double the price. You or I wouldnt get the benefit from it I wouldnt have though. Just get normal pc3200 Branded from the supplier.

I dont know much about power supplies ( think u need 350W to power the motherboard-ask supplier of board), i do know alot about cases though. I bought a case almost the same as this from Thermaltake...

http://www.thermaltake.com/products/xaser3/v1000a.htm

And beleive me, when you build your first pc these cases are a fuckin dream to work with. Its difficult to explain, but basically everything just fits really well, bits of the case come off so you can slide other bits in. sounds silly, but I didnt think the case did anything but look good, but when i got this one i realised how well they had thought about building the case itself. You'd have to build a pc into one to understand.

If i had to buy another case, i would save up and get a Coolermaster one

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Coolermaster_Cases_126.html

The top one is nice for the money, but the Silver one thats 250 quid is the dogs bollocks.

Why is putting things in the case hard? Thats the part that baffles me the most. I can fit the processor ram and drives into the slots okay, but why is the case hard? Do you have to make the holes yourself?

Thanks a lot everybody once again for your help. ___T-X____ you have helped a lot thankyou. :) Building a PC is deffinetly a daunting task. Why is the 250 one the dogs bollocks? Isn't it just what your PC looks like on the outside?

Why would I sell it? Is the Case "really" that important?
