new 8x agp graphics card

I haven't been keeping up with the tech news and stuff.

Do you have to have an 8x agp capable motherboard to use these 8x agp cards? Or are they backwards compatible and can run on a 4x agp?

You can use an 8x card on a 4x board, but you'll only be able to run it at 4x.

8x does very little difference compared to a 4x card atm. I would guess that they are backward compatible but Im not sure.

would that downgrade the graphics card? i read the new stuff about 8x cards and they all said they haven't really shown the full potential of 8x agp.

You wouldn't be able to see any performance gain at all, really. Maybe in some synthetic benchmark you'd gain a few points, but in playing you'd not be able to notice it at all.Some say that 8x is useless since nothing actually uses that much transferring power. If there is any benefit, though, it'll only be maybe .1 frames per second

I have been looking at Mobos lately and it seems the N-Force chip set is more inclined to be 8x AGP compatible

safest thing you can do is check the specs on the card and match it to the motherboard. Some MB's are backwards compatible and some aren't (just like graphic cards) - it just depends on the graphic card form factor and the AGP voltage compatibilty ...

I think 8x agp will only be usefull with DX9 games because of more polygons in the textures

i tend to keep agp accel off, it kinda messes up my system sometimes
