There are free ones out there.

Strata used to have thier old client out for free. Don't know if they still do.

Truespace (which I use and I think is excellent) have a free trial version.

Well TBH Truespace is marketed as a Hobby software (although the price is nuts now, I was lucky to buy it cheap when it was version 3 and upgrade).

Strata3d I think it was, is totally free. The Mac version I had worked fine, PC worked as well but had adverts in it last time I used it.

Two other applications you can use (both free) are Mikshape and GMax. I'd reccomend GMAX because it has almost all the functionality of 3D Studio Max, and you can download import/export filters to get around the "one file format" limitation.

GMAX is a free cut down version of 3D studio max made specifically for Gamers, mod makers etc. All you have to do is register it, when you install.
