If your running Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows NT, and Windows Server 2003 (heck whatever your running even) please make sure you have fully updated your copy at http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

There have been many security patches the last couple weeks as some pretty malicious stuff has been released that came out publically on July 16th and if it gets on your computer your pretty well screwed (pardon my french) as all the firewalls and antivirus stuff isn't going to help you if your operating system has more holes then swiss cheese. Apparently many people have already been affected:

One of the articles (http://www.wallstreetandtech.com/story/techwire/TWB20030725S0006)

Better safe then sorry and you should always keep your computers up to date anyways.

Thanks for the warning.

When I went on that page microsoft told me that I had no "critical" updates, and when I searched through the non-critical updates none of them had anything to do with security issues. Does that mean I'm ok?

Tip If you think you have a virus. Get sysclean (http://www.trendmicro.com) its a free tool to wack malware or any other types of trojens. It take a little poking around there site to actually find it. It does work though. It will clean your system of any trojens. Don't forget to get the latest dat filles from them, for it to work. Trojens usually work by rewriting some files in your system. Sysclean will undo there nasty work.

Also Those emails you get for example, forward foward virus warning if your in my address book you have been sent a virus that will destroy your hard drive on the 15th, yada yada bla bla., ect.

All of those types of emails are hoaxes

Whenever you get sent a virus warning through email. Do a seach at .Synamtic (http://www.symantec.com/)
for that file name. Before you take any other action.
Btw they also have some worm removal tools.

Most of these emails have peaple deleting needed windows files

See this is why you never use a microsoft OS as a server, unless you want problems. Put a *nix box in front of those crap windows boxes and your problems will be solved. Yay for iptables.

*cough*. um.. hate to tell you this dude but running a *NIX does not automatically make you invulnerable. UNIX boxen were being rooted well before Microsoft wrote server software.

Incidentally for anyone in the North West (UK) area interested in securitry, why not check out this years haxx0...er.. "IT Security Professional" piss u... er... Heheh yeah I guess an idiot who doesn't know how to properly use one is in just as much trouble...a well-ran unix box with tight security makes you alot closer to invulnerable then anything else though.

Keep in mind, nothing is 100% invulnerable.

Yeah - but then a well run Windows box is also very secure. As we all know though all it takes is one exploit (like the present windows issue) to get pwned. The main issue is that a lot of people simply don't update their machines. It goes for *NIX too - take a look at the FTP and BIND buffer overflows a couple of years ago. You could know everything about UNIX, take all the precautions and still be owned. Nasty stuff.

Just goes to show you - if one of the richest companies in the world can be haxx0red, what chance do we mere mortals have?

The only thing we have going for us is that for serious crackers to get interested in us (who WOULD pwn us) we would have to have something very valuable indeed worth stealing, and I'm sorry but that cabinet full of DS chips just isn't valuable enough :)

Nope your right all it takes is some petrol to make your nice shiny comp a piece of scrap metal.

Also just a reminder. Don't use 3rd party programs unless your 100% sure they are safe. We just got through banning a fucker from here when we were told about a keylogger in his skills guide.

If you are unsure about a certain player made program, feel free to contact me or Nid and we will check it out first.

heh i would love to see someone try to hack/send a virus to my pc, it would probably crash because of cpu overload type thing if a virus was trying to get in and a hacker would probably give up because they loose patients with my slow, slow machine :D

30.5 megs to download...only took about 4 minutes. Morty loves cable =)

By the way, has anyone installed the Windows 2000 Service Pack 4? SP# fuxored my machine, so I've stayed on SP2, and I'm wondering if it's safe to use.

I upgraded to W2K SP4 as a result of this thread with no problems. That's not a guarantee that you won't have problems though...

For anyone having the problem with svchost.exe gettng terminated and a system shutdown started by "NT AUTHORITY" via the RPC Prodedure Call, here is a link to the Microsoft TechNET Website with information and how to fix it.

SP4 screwed my comp too, no way for neocron to work and it's not the single prog affected : I've tried to upgrade adobe reader from 5 to 6, no way fro my machine to run the installer ... I'll switch back to sp3 or even install XP, which will be my doom, I already know it ...

If any have had the same problem and found a way to fix it, please let me know for I don't want to perform a full comp install for the 3d time this week ... :-/

Dru Blood
11-08-03, 22:27
boohoo, i just got infected by this RPC, its easily stopped, just enable a firewall to block ports 135, 139, and 445. basicly an overload which will make ur comp reset like every 45 seconds.

now this will give you enough time to get your ass down to http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

where you should download all the critical updates, after this you can disable the firewall as the port overload will no longer effect your machine.

a quick addendum on lovesan.

once that popup "system shutdown" box appears... type shutdown -a into the start>run box to cancel it for long enough to get those lovely virus removal tools and patches on your system :D

Are you sure your CPU isn't overheating?
Make sure your PC case is clean and in a well ventilated place, get an air canister and blow out the CPU fan and GFX card fan....
