Thanks for posting that on my behalf Neo... Yup, I'm snooping around assessing changes in Neocron that may entice me back. I hear that others are able to get it running on linux however using the custom Wine from h07, I get no satisfaction :)

I achieve minor success as detailed in Neo's post. I can start the client and get to the logon screen, but all fonts pertaining to the logon fields and redefine key fields, etc, do no display :(

I'm using WineX 3.1 with the Transgaming Point2Play installer frontend.

Vice City runs like a sexy thing. But no Neocron reviewing :(

I have been trying for the last couple of months (Since WineXv2), to get NC to work on Linux. All my results ended up as the same as yours. I can log in, run around but I can't see whats being said or typed, plus the mouse is a little irratic (But, easily fixed via mouse slider in OPTIONS).

EDIT: What I mean by running around, is that I can accually get into NC and use my character.

If you accually log the WineX session while running NC, you'll notice some GDI errors that happens. I suspect these errors are connected / related to the missing characters. And with those errors in hand, I have gone to a few dev forums (including WineX-specific) in search of technical answers, but had no replies. I've done some google-searches for the same errors under WineX, and basically it amounts to WineX-specific problem. Answer: To get the problem fixed, have the game voted in at WineX and only then it would be fixed.

As like you, I'm a discouraged Linux user having to use Windows to play this game, but honestly, there is nothing that can be done unless you wanna start the porting. WineX people will only support games that are voted for, and KK will not make a Linux client (I'm sure if ya do a search in the forums, I think someone from KK commented on it). I don't blame them for not doing one, since porting the code and graphics from DX API (Yuckie) to OpenGL is no simple task. It basically the same reason why a lot of game support hasn't come out for Linux.. OpenGL API is a very complex structure and codeset to work with versus DirectX which is small and less complicated.

Just think of it this way.. Windows makes a great gaming console nothing more! So you don't need to spend all your money on PS2 or XBox. :p

My specs for my testing:
Slackware 8 & 9 / Debian 3
XFree86 4.1 & 4.2
WindowMaker & Enlightenment
WineX v2 & v3
GF3 & GF4

I saw this a while back and I'm suspecting it too has the font problem... has to be someway around this... I'm just about to turn my machine into a Gentoo box, however Neocron is my only stumbling block.

My appologies guys, just remembered, im not using the latest pre-built package freom transgaming, im using the CVS build (I tend to rebuild it weekly).

Might be worth a try.

I get minor graphical glitches everyt now and again and it runs slighly slower than in windows, but it does run :)

What about the missing fonts bug and such... also are you using the "win98" config style for running with WineX or ... what are your settings?

there is a god!

This is so odd, I was a bout to do a search for Linux in the forums, and here is this post!

Iv run linux before, and its cool, nothing you can't do. The only reason I use windows for is NC, the ONLY reason. I was just about to instal diff distros of linux to decide which i want to switch to, then work my Damndest to get NC to run in Linux. Problem is, I don't know shit about programming. :( I was going to try to wing it and self teach, but my hopes aint too high.

We can band together! The new "Neocron Under Linux Group"!
We CAN do it! GO TEAM!!:)

I did give this hacked Wine version a try and it didn't work at all for me. I don't know if anyone has RECENTLY been able to get NC to work with it or not (Please confirm??).

I suspect that some recent changes to NCs graphics / font engine, maybe the culprit in this case. But, in all honesty, I can't say.. I've only recently just started to learn C (under Linux). :D

I've tried all the various Wine(X) apps out there, and no go. I may look at the Crossover app that Codeweavers have released. Though I'm not going to hold my breath, since the app is more geared towards productivity applications vs. gaming apps. *shrug*

Alas, we continue to struggle for Linux support.. And unfortunately, the masses only want EQ it seems. Hell, even AO isn't supported by WineX. (To clarify, AO was supposed to release a AO client for Linux, but never saw the light of day).

My first version:

Neocron with Linux...
---------------------

1 Installation WineX-CVS
1.1 Configuration, Fake Windows

Prior you can compile WineX, you need the following packets.

- MESA3D Library (debian: xlibmesa & xlibmesa-dev)
http://mesa3d.sourceforge.net/

- FreeType2 (debian: freetype2)
http://www.freetype.org/

- XFree86-Libs (debian: xlibs ;-) )

After you installed these packets you can go on with the next steps.

step by step :

1: tar xzvf winex.tar.gz
2: cd wine
3: ./configure --with-x --disable-trace --enable-opengl --disable-debug

------------------------------------------------------------------
HINT: If you use Next Generation Posix Threads. (Standard in redhat9, mandrake9)
You have to use the following configure options:
./configure --with-ntpl --with-x --disable-trace --enable-opengl --disable-debug
------------------------------------------------------------------

4: make depend && make
5: su
6: make install

1.1 Configuration Fake Windows

You can not use a mounted real windows version. Windows will get problems with the native dll's.

1. Make the windows directory hierarchy e.g. $HOME/fake_windows/

cd $HOME/fake_windows/
mkdir Program\ Files
mkdir Windows
mkdir Windows/System
mkdir Windows/System32
mkdir Windows/Fonts

2. Copy you neocronfolder from the mounted windowspartition to $HOME/Program\ Files/Neocron
(Because the patcher does not work with wine you need a ready patched version.)

3. You need the Ole32.dll from windows98/95/ME (No win2000, xp, ...).
Copy the file to $HOME/fake_windows/Windows

Configuration WineX
-------------------
Create a folder $HOME/.wine and copy the file 'config' from the archive in.
Maybe you need to change some variables.

Start Neocron
-------------

cd $HOME/fake_windows/Programme/Neocron
wine Client.exe -managed

Report your Success
-------------------

Please post your expiriences here:

http://neocron2.jafc.de/showthread.php?threadid=62641

Most interesting is, did you get the fonts work.

Greetings

Enrico aka Striker Alsom ;)

Feel like helping me?

PS @ Deep Thoughts - Do you have NC running in Linux?...

Hm you guys are getting further than me...

Tried it under VMWare (Yes I know it was going to suck badly) it didn't work. Neocron client starts and exits, can't even config the sounds and graphics.

WineX - It installs, but the launcher fails. Turns out a missing mfc42.dll file. It sill doesn't work - lots of other errors....

I will try point2play - or upgrade my Redhat desktop box from 7.3 to 9.0 (I'm waiting for 9.1/10)

Try installing Internet Explorer if you haven't already for the launcher bug... that might help fix it. (Thru WineX or Wine)

I dont think NC will work to well under linux, because afaik linux doesnt support D3D and neocron wont work in OpenGL :(

yibble
19-08-03, 15:51
WineX is a great thing Nasher. It's a culmination of Wine + DirectX support.

I can run Neocron with WineX. But I just can't view the fonts at the logon screen :( That's the issue we're trying to solve.

I've no idea, I can't get past the login screen. Because I can't see the text :) Very annoying, because the client starts fine...

Malek
19-08-03, 18:59
I think it probably has something to do with the fact that the fonts are rendered or something instead of being displayed like normal fonts. (Hence the reason most players get such an FPS drop when they read long forum posts / e-mails in game.) So I don't think this'd quality as a request for font support... more or less game support unfortunately. I heard someone who posted here got it working but they haven't replied to my ICQ messages or anything...

Not yet.
I'm missing a running windows at the time. ;)

It's verry strange. Windows crashes only if i don't use it. Billygotchy... :)

One time i boot windows for playing, but without any reason it will not run.
Everytime the same.

And i'm not bothered to fix that stupid crap. :(

Ok, heres a question: @ Yibble, what Distro of Linux are you running?

In fact the more specifics of your entire system you can give that you actualy have NC running on the better :)

Thank you up front

As I mentioned earlier in this thread:

The problem with NC under WineX is the rendering of the fonts. No one said it was IMPOSSIBLE to run NC under WineX. If you log the errors, you'll see the errors that myself and other are speaking about.

Yes, it is true, that NC will run under WineX with some hax0ring about. But, don't expect to see whats being said. This discussion has been carried on through out some other forums, and it isn't going to be fixed anytime soon.

Summary is this:
- WineX = Fails due to improper font rendering (P2P will make no difference, since its a GUI for people who can't use a CLI to install their games)

- Wine = Fails, no DX suppot

- VMWare = Fails, VMWare uses a SVGA driver for emulation. So good luck on getting DX working

- Crossover Plugin = Fails, geared toward productivity apps

Unless the following happens:
- Someone (1337 coder(S)) steps up to the plate to do the work. Possibly with help from KK, if the work is being done for free. But, I wouldn't hold my breath.

- Attempt to hack the WineX code, or create your own Linux client without the help of KK.

- Beg / Plead with KK to conform to the WineX codeset (Not going to happen, but I had to mention it)

- Vote on Transgaming for NC support. Unfortunately, there isn't enough of us to vote for it against the newer games.

- Be patient for the next WineX release to see if any of the newly supported games fixes the font rendering issue.

No matter what distro you use, we're going to get all the same results. Redhat / Gentoo / Debian / Slackware / ect is not better than the other when it comes to this stuff. So don't bother spinning your wheels, thinking that somehow the distro you are using is going to produce different results, cause its the WineX code like its been said before.

KK has already made its statement about the future for Linux support. And that is where its going to stand, unless a volunteer in the community does it.

The fonts In-Game don't work either?o_O

FreeBassX
19-08-03, 19:31
If you wish to see NC under WineX.. Its simple.

1) Install WineX 3.1 and setup
2) mount "windows_partition"
3) cp NC directory to Trangaming Virtual Program Files Directory
4) Run winex against client.exe (Don't bother with the launcher exe, it will fail all the time)
5) cp any missing system file from Windows into Transgaming Virtual Windows Directory
6) umount "windows_partition"
7) Load NC, run around and look pretty.. Cause you ain't talking to anyone.

Don't bother to use WineX or P2P to install NC cause you'll have further problems, then just copying it over.

As I've mentioned, this setup has worked on the following:

Slackware 8 / 8.1 / 9 & Debian
Wine 3.x
GF3 & 4
Intel & AMD procs
No special files or setups were needed in the testing.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask in this thread or in a PM.

I'm using Point2Play and WineX3.1 from http://www.transgaming.com/

I installed Neocron under Point2Play, them under vmware too. I then patched under vmware and copied the vmware instance of Neocron over the Point2Play instance. Then I edited the games.ini file for Neocron to include this:

[Play Neocron (Linux)]
path=C:/Program Files/Neocron/Client.exe
icon=/home/nreynolds/.point2play/Neocron//icons/configure neocron.xpm
workdir=/home/nreynolds/.point2play/Neocron/c_drive/Program Files/Neocron

It will appear that you have similar entries, but at the bottom of your 'config' file, you'll notice that additional switches are specified there.

With this set-up, I can run the client, but I can't login... And I can't see any text (apart from buttons) so I can't see what the error message is :)

Yibble,

You dmesg is going to do you no good here or even at the Transgaming forum. All the dmesg tells us is what you are running and some environment stuff.

The error log you need is the one that WineX produces when ya run a debug flag during runtime.

Well, maybe the text in the game isn't important to you, but it is to me.. I would like to see who is near me or who just entered a area, so I don't get jumped. :D

I was responding to Tycho C's request for information on the system I'm running... For that purpose, dmesg is perfect.

I'm not familiar at all with linux, went to install it once but shelved it after I found out my vidcard was too new and I'd have to downgrade just to install it, then patch it, then put my vidcard back in and configure it..

But after reading this thread it seems the only problem everyone is having is the font.

Anyone try replacing the fonts used in neocron with something that Linux can understand how to use? There is a Font directory in the neocron folder.. One idea is to just try taking a native font and renaming it, and replacing the ones included with Neocron.

Not sure if it will work, but it probably wouldnt hurt to try.

all the info BOTH of you have given is more thanIv seen in one place on the forums sence i got here. Im going to do my damndest to get it going, even if only for eduactional perposes.

my dream is to delete windows and never istall it again, but i guess that can only go so far.

not so important as the local list is chatting. Cant play the game without communication. We will just have to hold out for some improvements to majicaly make it work; or that some one some where knows how to do this and does it, then shares with the rest of us. Praise be to that person!

edit, i had the same idea Neowolf, didnt know if it would work...

WineX command line I use

winex3 -bigexe --debugmsg +err Client.exe 2> ~/nc.log

Here is a link to my log, since I hate posting large amounts of useless crap in forums.

My WineX debug log (http://members.shaw.ca/freebassx/neocron/nc.log)

Or if that didn't work.. Here's the link http://members.shaw.ca/freebassx/neocron/nc.log

Now, I'm going back to play NC.. :p

Dirn it all. I have been putting off getting WineX as I don't want to pay. Is there any free distro?

Sounds interesting, even if I don't understand half of what you techies are saying, heh.

Nice to hear that the winds of wierdness might waft towards Neocron... I better get a supply of nobs and knicknacks saved up so you can dress up your apts yibble ;)

I played with the idea of trying Linux out, but I didn't get around to it, not having a desktop rig of my own yet (well, I do, but not one that can play the newer games), that plus it sounds like a whole lot of command-line stuff.

Well, the reason I replied - why does the text/fonts HAVE to be rendered? I mean, sure, they're inside the game view, but its not like you have to do fancy graphics stuff TO them...

And what would be wrong with using teamspeak with your clan or other similarily equipped players (hey, could start up a general teamspeak channel for Neocron) so you can actually interact with them?

Just my usual braintossing, I am sure you remember what I'm like, yibble :D

No, in fact it was taken down recently and no one knows why... at least people I've talked to.

from that log:

fixme:font:AddFontResourceA (".\\Fonts\\HILOGI18.ttf"): stub! Read the Wine User Guide on how to install this font manually
fixme:font:AddFontResourceA (".\\Fonts\\arial.ttf"): stub! Read the Wine User Guide on how to install this font manually.

So it looks as if having the neocron fonts in the neocron dir means that wine can't find them. Have you tried copying them some where wine can find them? what does the wine userguide have to say?

Interesting point. Finaly got red hat up btw.
Advice: when it asks if ya wanna check the disks... check tha damn disks!

anyways. New problem, microsoft USB wireless lan adapter! SO many horrers in one sentance for Linux!! eeek! but i seem to have founf the fix, cross my fingers i can pull it off.

If I get that, then off to WineX!

Hmm, try copying the fonts to /fake_windows/Windows/Fonts ?

That's the default place Windows looks, so i'd assume that Wine would look there too.....

PS: I'm doing this on Fedora Core One, Dual pII 350mhz, ATi Rage 128, KDE, Loud music and tons of Coke.

Resurrecting an old thread to show previous tries and failures....that way nobody has to explain it all again.

Obviously WineX has gone to Cedoga, no problems there, but I did manage to get my hands on a copy of WineX Binary, installed, but when it trys to run client.exe I get this

err:win32:do_relocations Standard load address for a Win32 program (0x00400000) not available - security-patched kernel ?
err:win32:do_relocations FATAL: Need to relocate G:\home\MrTrip\fake_windows\programs\Neocron\Client.exe, but no relocation records present (stripped during link). Try to run that file directly !
/usr/lib/transgaming_winex3//winex/bin/wine_relocated: can't exec 'Client.exe': error=2

Kernel problems now? :(

I'm running Fedora Core 4, latest Kernel version, and have had minor success with everything, I got so far as to this with regular Wine

File System Check Failed: could not load file table.

Its getting to be very depressing...has anybody else had luck with this?

I found a German thread, but it translated VERY VERY poorly :(

Resurrecting an old thread to show previous tries and failures....

Please note that the bumping of very old threads is against the forum rules. However, as this thread is technically still relevant today, I am going to allow the continuation of it for Linux/Neocron issues. This does not mean that bumping is ok, or that exceptions will be made regularly.

Sorry to be a real party pooper, but if you're already running an x86 processor environment, what's there to stop you to make a 5-10 gig (max) NTFS partition with win 2k-XP and NC installed - just to run games?

Okay the thought of running NC in a native Linux environment also appeals to my inner nerd, but I get over it.

Thank you very much :) I am fully aware of the rules however, but hoped (thank you again) that a mod would be understanding, since the thread has much useful information on peoples past tries.

I really would like to shy away from Windows as much as possible, and running NC on Linux would allow me to do so.

I have a copy of Cedega, and attempted to run the client, again I get a file system check error, I will try installing NC with Cedega and see how that goes, maybe I can even patch it.

I managed to get NC Client to launch, but with no option for Window mode.

When it attempts to run full screen, it sits at a black screen....forever.

I have to reboot the system to get it back to my desktop. Setting window mode in the INI file does nothing either, I get back to the option of setting the resolution and no window mode option :( any ideas?

[edit]

I managed to get back to my desktop from the black screen, here is what I got

Neocron 1 I installed Cedega, I managed to get to the login screen, had all my fonts, when I get in game it will NOT render the RPOS, refuses to.

Neocron 2 I got to the login screen, NO text at all, enter my U+P, it sits awhile, then crashes.

O_o

The log complains about attempting to use a TrueType Font.....its like 1000000000000000000 lines long.

I had some neocron 1 linux thing at a time, think i still have it around..

Never tested it, cuz linux rejects my harddrives... even when I have them formatted for linux during install.

So don´t know if it even actually worked for neocron1.

Seems that his thing works for neocron 2 tho.

You are kidding. The most peeps can fix the font-"bug" on their own. The most common problem is connection to the server, but thats also fixed by some guys, inclusive myself.

Ive never seen Wine run it like that....do you think you could help me? :(

I fixed the spiderman bug, got a different set of drivers, Omega AND NVIDIA official drivers didnt work, but these other ones fixed it 100%

Well... Launcher seems to work, cant seem to get past the first FRE mind you.

Yay, no edit button :D

Anyhow, spent all day banging head against a brick wall, I can get wine Client.exe to run perfectly, takes me to the log in screen everything correct, as it should be. Stick in username and password, it refuses to connect to the server (same as NeocronLauncher.exe).

Netstat shows it has made a connection however, it just doesnt do anything, very frustrating and I cant find anyway around it >.<
