Do I need to try to recover that account?
Is that account long since gone as the game is something else now?
Do I need to link my CD key to the new account, or is that unused totally now?

Probably the fastes way to get a account is just to register a new one on the webside.
You dont need the old keys or anything for that.

You will no longer be able to recover your old Pluto account. Those days are way behind us.
It would be best to create yourself a new account via: http://neocron-game.com/AccountManagement/Register
There is also no need to link your CD key to the game, as it is now Free2Play. No micro-transactions, or pay2win.
