Someones attempt at a cyberpunk mmo and it reminds me heavily of Neocron but maybe that's simply the similar setting.

I was interested until I saw they will be using a tab targeting system instead of FPS.

The devs played Neocron and said it inspired them to make that mmo.

Did they just do a "find and replace" with neocron terminology, or was it a straight up cut and paste job?

Which makes it more bizarre they would go with a tab targeting system.

I assume tab targeting is easier to implement which is why almost all other MMO's go with it. It likely just removes the whole issue of clipping which has been a particular thorn in NC's side.

But UED is free. I would hope they considered using that tbh. But then Im not a developer so I dont know the differences in requirements.

They more or less admitted to ripping you guys off for content in their forum. I made an account there because I had to ask and see if i recognised anyone. You might wanna tell Kirk just in case they are infringing on his IP at all, with it being a commercial release and all.

Probably, but still lessens my hype. Oh well, I'll still check it out if it ever actually comes out.

No doubt the game is heavily influenced by NC but they haven't actually stolen assets or copied words and phrases like genrep, copbot and gogo. I'm no lawyer but from what I've seen of it, there doesn't seem to be anything copyright infringing.

I've been following the game for a while and lost most of my interest when they announced the cookie cutter combat system. I'll still check it out if/when it's released, it's the closest thing to NC3 we're going to get.

Of course First President Alexandros, contrary to what dissidents and political agitators may try to propagate, was not a despotic, power-hungry autocrat who held the city in an iron grip. In fact, the benevolent leader of Heliopolis was a wise and learned man. Suspicions that anyone who wishes the city were run in a more democratic fashion, disappear without a trace, on the order of the President, are of course totally unfounded and do not contain even the slightest trace of truth.

Of course President Reza, contrary to what dissidents and political agitators try to propagate, is not a despotic, power-hungry autocrat who holds the city in an iron grip. In fact, the benevolent leader of Neocron is a wise and learned man, who merely is head of the city council, which holds the true power in the city. Suspicions that the only reason for this council not being formed in free elections is because its current members are supposedly Reza's puppets, are of course totally unfounded and do not contain even the slightest trace of truth.

Their design team has taken every aspect of nc and done a "find and replace" on each word. Soullight has been changed to Karma and various other game mechanics have been just directly ported without any kind of nod to the original. Its so amateur its not even true.

Just seen this, so checked out the site. Wow, blatant rip off. The nerve of some people. Kirk needs to stomp.

yeah, it looks like they are (still) reading the nc-forums ;)

Just to show you, what their old factions-page looked like (before they saw this post and changed it ;):

if you're searching for "neocron" there you'll get this funny message

The following words in your search query were ignored because they are too common words: neocron.
You must specify at least one word to search for. Each word must consist of at least 3 characters and must not contain more than 14 characters excluding wildcards.

I see they are covering their tracks - the wayback machine no longer has their archives. However here is the Google Cache (http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:prhJZRtPDfoJ:exile-online.com/index.php/gamefeatures/27-subfeatures/66-factions+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk) version.

However I did read it a few days ago when they had almost a word for word version of Crahn... called The Church of Grod.... The name is an insult to Crahn - and that's saying a lot as a Fallen Angels player.

Funnily enough the THN forums has the same issue - but I guess they do talk a lot about NC!

I got the same treatment Nikabolokov.

I asked how many people had played nc as it was a blatant rip off. Surprisingly enough they didnt reply.

Strange huh.

Honestly if someone wants to rip off NC and give us another take on it, I'd be very supportive. People have tried to buy the NC IP on several occasions, but someone continues to believe the IP has more tangible value currently than it does. There has been no revenue for years, but someone holds on to hope that the IP is going to give them a big payoff and the likelihood is that they are going to continue to suffocate it until it simply has little to no re-claimable value.

I love the game and the NST, but lack of real competition paired with the fact they volunteer means NOTHING can move quickly enough and we all look like the assholes when we're not giving the NST all the space and time that they need.

If this was a serious game project with an proper experienced dev team on it then I might be concered/hopeful about how they are blatantly ripping off Neocron but this is just a group of hobbyists amateurs,ex-neocron players no doubt, that are having fun exploring a few ideas and producing some art work. That is it, when the reality of what is actually involved with making a game like this sets in over the next 6 to 12 to 18 months it will slowly fade away. I agree with Divide though, I would love nothing more than to be wrong here, but I'll stake my reputation as a game dev of 15 years that we're going to see this project drop off the face of the earth in 6-18 months tops

The state of the website alone give you a good indication of this, looks like something that was made about 10 years ago. Looks very unprofessional, id say nothing to see here.

Lol if i wanted to piss away my money and have nothing to show for it I'd go on a drinking session.

No way I'd be funding anything that looks that dodgy.

Before asking for money I would also get the kickstarter article proof read and remove the "engrish" out of it. It is not professionally done, at best it is formal. It does not provide any idea of any goals or milestones for what the development looks like and it does not inspire in any way, shape or form. It doesn't say to me hey I want to give you money. I saw a few typos and it just put me right off.

You only get one shot at first impressions and I think these guys missed.
