View Full Version : Cyberpunk Movies
Hi, just making this thread to recommend a movie and maybe get recommended some films I haven't seen.
So, besides the obvious big ones, (Blade Runner and The Matrix for example) any recommendations?

Anime did more for Cyberpunk than probably any other genre.
Ghost in the Shell (entire franchise).
Akira
Armitage III
Cowboy Bebop
Mardoc Scramble
Havn't seen Real Drive yet.
Heard of all those except Mardoc and Real Drive. I've also seen some of GitS, all of Akira and Cowboy Bebop. Thanks for the recommendations.

Armitage III FTW, I haven't seen that in ages! I'll have to look it up again.
Tank Police is a great anime. Also, for non-anime, Equilibrium is a good one with Christian Bale.

Someone also posted this a while back:

Also forgot: Dredd, the newer Judge Dredd iteration is awesome!
A while back some also posted another short movie, where cops had become some kind of armored insurance brokers or somethign but i can't remember.
Also, apparently Keloid is actually getting a making now...
And of course, the classic mindfuck: eXistenZ

Drachenpaladin, you mean "Dredd" ;)
I like the new one - Karl Urban can act with his jaw line :D
Let's start with *nice* anime cyberpunk: Astro Boy, Summerwars
An anime I like very much: Vexille
Then I think Appleseed (whole series) and Bubblgum Crisis hits too.
A one you can argue about: Heavy Metal
Nice TV-Series:
"Intelligence" - only one season, but I like it.
"Max Headroom" :D
Movies:
I, Robot
Surrogate
Terminator (whole series)
Dark City
Equilibrium
Great classic movies are "Futureworld", "Westworld", "Logans Run", "Hackers", "Wargames", "Screamers"
and maybe the first cyberpunk ever: Metropolis
only a few, but there are more.
Thanks for all the recommendations everyone, I've started watching Armitage III. I'm surprised that I've either heard of or seen most of the things people are recommending, I guess the genre really is that small.

Well, I know Gibson got movies based on two of his books, one had Keanu Reeves if I recall correctly, however I heard both were terrible.
I think one of the movies you're talking about has been mentioned already, Johnny Mnemonic. I don't think it's shit, it's not a classic by any stretch but it's well worth a watch. Also Keanu manages to act almost human in some scenes, so it's worth it just to see that.
Oh, who's seen this one?

a few shorts in the theme.
to be truly into cyberpunk, look for "Avalon" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0267287/)! Best Cyberpunk film that I've ever seen, Matrix would look like a drom's piss compared to this film!
I recommend no order.
vanilla sky
The thirteenth floor
oblivion
cyberpunk as a movie trope branches out (afaik) into:
- hacker lore ("War Games", "Tron", "Gamer")
- robots ("Robocop", "Rerminator", "Chappie")
- postapocalypse/spacepunk ("Pandorum ", "Cargo", "Alien")
- nonreality (all of Phil.K.Dick, "Total Recall", "Paycheck")
feel free to add.

Btw, is it must me or does the 2013 Elysium with Matt Damon feel like a Battle Angle Alita hack?
