This might turn out to be a lobby based arena shooter.

Tbh, there hasn't been a good one since Q3A. Could become a thing if thats really it, especially if they are smart enough to get ESL and MLG on board.

Educated guess: exomarines/exicore/exocom (or whatever it ends up being called) will likely be F2P.
Let's see what mjs has prepped come August 1st - curious to see how well it will resonate with a NC audience :)

Same here. Tho, given the history and nature of the NC audience i guess it wont resonate very well. Purely out of personal, subjective reasons. They be bitchy, like always...

Unreal 4 is on the way, if its an arena shooter it will need to compete with that tbh.

I expect mjs to ship before 2016 - besides, the little material that was shown this far does not look like exocom will compete with UT or Q3. I'd put my money on something that is much more similar to Planetside or BF in terms of gameplay ;)

exactly - hence I don't expect it to compete with UT4.

You know, its blindingly obvious when you say it but you are completely right. If its free to play tbh I think I will download it for a nosey. I guess its the best we can do to show our support.

ok - so it IS an arena shooter it is not F2P and the name (toxikk) is what I took for an alternative to the studio brand, would reakktor not have been available. wrong on all accounts. also predicted it would be worth checking out ... now I am worried :p

TOXIKK (http://toxikk.com/) Nice play on the KK bit there. So yeah it's a arena shooter with no complications and it uses UE4 - and it's got it's own version of crowdsourcing. (Aka a Store page with a Paypay button)

Can't say I'm excited....yet....

toxikk is appearantly neocron minus the RP part. panic! i fear the loss of 2 - 3 players, at least for more than a week, until giving up to compete with the UT and general FPS crowd, retreating to NC and complaining its not shooty enough. but thats just my opinion. you may see things from a different angle.

... of Typherra Research Inc. Nice to see a little nod to NC there. :)

Edit: Just looking at the shot of one of the vehicles (http://toxikk.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Webslide_920x420_031.jpg) reminds me of the DoY Hoverbomber just looking a lot more sleeker.

Well, Typherra is more then a NC wink, that game is even older then NC, and they even recycled some bulkhead textures iirc.
But yeah, just like they did with Irata in Black Prophecy^^

Fan Service, KK-style^^

hm - not sure what I think of the art direction. Strange mixture of a cartoony / cell shading touch and realistic styles - if done badly, it could easily look like a shortcoming and not so much like a deliberate style choice.

Not exactly sure what you find cartoony or cell-shading about the game...

Btw, anyone else noticed how the visor is soooo looking like the Tank PA, especially if you consider the WOC PAs?

Because its not drowning in brown and gray?^^
I see no cell shading effect nor any other overly cartoony style elements. Other then maybe vibrant colors and the maybe a bit bulky car...
Which btw reminds me of our red HH Combat Wheeler V.2... so many references! Just hope the gun is better then what we got...

Not sure why any of you are excited, it'll be like anything reakktor has worked on.

Good, possibly amazing idea and a great storyline, and they'll make it into a horrible game.

not this time.
they skipped originality and the elaborate backstory and went for a simple arcade shooter. they are very deliberate in their marketing about how features XYZ are _not_ part of the plan - which may work out nicely for them, as it could fill a niche and also reduces complexity for the small dev team.

... could still turn out to be a horrible game - despite the absence of amazing ideas and a great storyline :p

odds that it makes it to retail:
100%, worst case they'll just put a nice label on the alpha and ship it as banana-ware. :p

over/under amount of days it makes it past launch:
hard to say - unlike a MMO the overhead to keep it alive should be fairly low (as a LAN based arena shooter, without requiring a centralized architecture, it could survive for a long, long time)

Lost all interest the moment the announcement came up, I'm just not interested in playing another arena shooter. Although I can't blame KK for not trying another Neocron or Black Prophecy style game given how those turned out.

Neocron with its expansions was a fairly profitable game and has made KK good money for a long time. It was always a small niche game, but still a successful. Replicating that success would probably be harder now - certainly not doable with the shoestring budget used to develop NC1. A Neocron 3 would require a much, much bigger investment upfront, but raising capital for non-AAA games that are not the umpteenth sequel of a game with an existing fan base, appears to be pretty hard these days.

Looks A LOT like Halo, IMO.

Of course, I'll check it out. Old school Arena FPS' are seemingly making a comeback. We have this plus the new F2P Unreal Tournament and that arena shooter from CliffyB (formerly Epic Games) and his team.

EDIT: Also, do I see a little Neocron inspiration on one of the maps? ;)

I dont think its what they "want", its what they have gotten used to and game developers see WOWs success and simply think "thats what people must love, so lets do that too".
but its shit! Archeage was ruined because of the WOW clone style systems, that could have been the best game ever if it wasnt for that.

The following only reflects my own, personal, opinion!

I totally agree! Many companies do not do games because they want to make awesome games, but instead to make a lot of money. So they do what everyone in economics would recommend them: look at the market, see what performs best, adapt their ideas/products and clone them with a little touch of your own and you will become rich with not much effort.
Same holds by the way for Microsoft: they thought that Apple is performing better than them, they looked at their platform et voila Windows 8 was born, trying to tell the user that their OS is smarter than them, which it definitely isn't.

Reakktor is partially doing the same here, except for the fact that they also look at the past and have a look what performed best on the market. A rather welcome change in my opinion. But that's not the only thing which they did well. The fact that they did not loose any word about the game itself until it is mostly finished gameplay wise was also a nice strategic move, it helped to keep the expectations low. They are now in the position to rebuild trust into Reakktor games. Another thing they did right is aiming for a release way before the next iteration of Unreal Tournament therefore avoiding the direct competition for a long time, somehow like the guys behind Torchlight did. Their marketing campaign "no f2p" is along the same line as the "no more elves" campaign and it critizes the recent waves of pay to win games, something which many gamers have become sick of. All in all I think they are at least aiming in the right direction and doing a lot of things right, whether they are really right that's something the gamers in the end will have to decide. I for my part appreciate their efforts to bring back old-school gaming.

I was a fan of Quake3 and although it is no where near the top of my favourite games ever list I am quite glad that they are aiming to make a shooter that isnt another "team based military game" like all of the CODs, battlefields and the 100's of others that have come out in the last 5 years or so, about time there was another proper free for all shooter.... and someone in the link posted above said $15?? If that price point is true then i think that is another good decision (assume it is enough on thier end).

There are a number of games that follow this basic theme that have come out over the years. Many like Planetside keep getting reworked but keep the basic theme. Maybe people play them, I donno. I've checked out a few and its hard to stay interested in them. Not my style of game though. But them again I don't see what the attraction to MOAB's is, so maybe I'm just not a "normal" gamer. O_o
