View Full Version : THN Online - UPDATED 11/03/2014

Right as some of you have gathered via Facebook and Twitter, the THN is offline due to a hardware failure.

This is due to a disk in the RAID1 mirror failing this morning. The server will not be brought back online until the disk is replaced. At this time I don't have an ETA for when the disk will be replaced, since a new disk needs to be purchased and installed.

The one bit of good news I can offer, is the data on the THN is all backed up, so nothing (In theory) should be lost, and I have since taken another backup this afternoon to be safe.

Thanks for the heads up. However, I'm wondering why one disk failing in a RAID1 mirror causes trouble for the server? Normally a RAID1 array has one good copy of the data even if one disk fails completely. Is it because you want to be on the safe side and replace the disk before the other one has chance to fail and force a restore from the backup?

You are correct, the server should be able to carry on with a disk missing from the. Although the server did lock up at one point.

Although the 2nd disk in the mirror is fine *touchwood* I don't want to put too much strain on the server until it is replaced, so the disk intensive stuff like the web server and DB server are stopped. Plan is to get the disk in, let the mirror re-sync, check things over and bring the server when it's ready.

Sorry about the hard luck, Brammers! Your array probably shut itself down to protect against total failure. Many highpoint controllers do that by default. We need to get you mirrored/proxied like tpb... NC needs th.org like a crackhead needs $20 to get his fix.

Not sure if it would help due to not knowing what hardware you're running or your location(ship time)but I thought I would offer... I have six new in sealed boxes 300 GB axiom 2.5 inch sas drives.(https://m.cdw.com/shop/products/HP-Dual-Port-Enterprise-hard-drive-300-GB-SAS-2/1723330)
I have no use for them and they just sit on my shelves, you're more than welcome to any or all if they would help you. I'm sure you've already placed an order for a replacement but I just thought I would throw that out there since you guys do so much for the community it's the least I could do.

You are right, something is wrong. People are wanting the wrong thing. Screw free candy, forget double XP, I demand BEER! :D ;)

First all thanks to @hudsonbeck for the offer of the HD's, a replacement HD has been sourced I may still take your offer up though. For everyone's information, the server is a R200 Dell commission in 2010 IIRC. It's a shared server between myself and 10 other users from my Uni days. Out of the users on the server, I think I would consider myself one of the heavy users of the system with the THN. As for the location, it's in the UK at Maidenhead.

As I said a new HD has been sourced, but it's going to take a while to get to the UK, which is something, I'm not happy about. However I did order a new VPS as a temporary solution for hosting one of my other sites yesterday which is now running. It should have enough power to host the THN if a little slower.

At this time, a copy of the THN is transferring to the temporary server, and I need to setup the DB's and update the DNS. So I'm hoping to bring back parts of the site tonight.

Now to help me to bring things back online quicker, I would like you guys to tell me which 2 things are the most essential parts of the THN which you would like back first. I want to see 10 responses to this thread, otherwise I'll assume the THN isn't important and head down the pub instead for the evening. ;)

Bram, please post an email address for Paypal donations to the THN hamster HD fund. I think I speak for most of the community when I say that the service THN provides to us loyal NC veterans justifies a small donation from those who use it :)

I'll find a way to make that happen. Funds to help run the THN server are welcome. I'm a little reluctant to put up my paypal email, as it's one of my personal email addresses as well.

In the mean time, keep an eye on https://twitter.com/TechHaven for updates. First on the list looks like the item DB. This could get interesting, since this server is running a slightly newer distro...

Not yet visible here. You have an insanely long TTL for the DNS records (43000 seconds) of *.techhaven.org. You could use something like 7200 seconds (2 hours) easily and not have any problems with the DNS server getting overloaded with requests. Makes this type of relocations much more painless and quicker.

Tried from east coast US with Comcast as DNS (home) and it resolves fine. Haven't had a chance to look at much so no issues to report.

Thanks Brammers! We are all indebted to you!

Ok everything is now back online, please report any problems here.

As @Nanook quite correctly pointed out, the TTL on the THN is quite long (12 hours) so if you can't connect clear your DNS with ipconfig /flushdns and hope your ISP doesn't cache it too long.

One other thing I would appreciate comments on speed and connectivity. The THN is now located on a different server and spec so I do want to see how this server performs. :)

/Mods: Could you update the thread title to THN back online please and change the thread icon to a smiley :)

Out of curiosity, what is the average RAM and CPU load like for the THN?

Looking at the page now, it feels snappy enough. Most requests are served < 700 ms.
You could probably improve by using an opcode cache (I sense fairly high cpu times for a modest page build, so I guess opcode caching is not currently in place?) and by reducing http requests. All those tiny ~1kb images are ideal pray for sprites. To further speed up the page load, consider including css before any js file is referenced (currently, jQuery is blocking concurrent asset transfer - moving it to the </body> won't hurt). As with the images, merging/minifying js and css assets could also save a few http requests. Lastly, assets seem to be missing proper cache headers.

Those are just the finer details though, no critique intended. The THN is a great resource and everyone involved is made of awesome!

Load is a little high for my liking, but you are right opcode cache is off at the moment, it was causing issues with I suspect classes with the same name in different namespaces.

You been using Google's page speed reports? As that sounds nearly the same thing it had reported to me. :) However you are spot on there. The Stats DB/Wiki/Forums are up-to-date with modern code, but the Rares DB, Items DB is ...let me be frank and call it old shite? ;)

Indeed.

You been using Google's page speed reports?

Same stuff in a different wrapper: Chrome Dev Tools (Profile, Audit, Network). Imho they are to performance analysis what the W3C-Validator is to markup. Not the final solution to everything, but hard to beat for weeding out the common issues.

I just wanted to say thanks to you guys forgetting this back up so quickly! Neocron would be a completely different game without the resources which you guys provide.

If you guys do adopt a way for people to donate money or material, as I mentioned before, please let us know! I know I for one would be happy to donate.

Thanks again!

It seems to be working now. Maybe it was just my phone and poor reception. When I clicked on Showtime earlier it didn't display but it is now. Sorry false alarm I assume it was just my phone.
