What happend to barrels?

Indoors I could cast one on any object or creature but when I went to the MB it won't cast unless I put it on the ground.

You have to cast it against a surface basically. Indoor it usually work because there is a surface behind or next to the creature.
At least, this is how it seems to be working for me.
