My mouse seems to be playing up, though I'm not sure what the cause is.

Basically, half the time, it decides to double-click when I press the button once.

Driver? Old mouse? (likely) USB issues?

I'd say that it's probably the mouse is becoming no longer not broken.
I have an old Logitech MX510 that has a hard time detecting when the left mouse button is being held down, which makes doing a lot of things really difficult.

I suggest that you try it with another computer.

If it is a valuable mouse, then you might be able to fix it by exchanging the capacitors (low-pass RC combination) in it that prevents mechanical (micro-)bouncing of the buttons.

Those have the tendancy to be quite cheap and die within few years.

If you have two left hands or the mouse is a cheap one: just get a new.

I assume it's a wired mouse?

However if not, try re-positioning the receiver as mine tends to go a bit wonky as i have 2 other wireless receivers stood next to it for various other peripherals.
