Got in from work last night, watched Hollyoaks like ya do...

7pm - Pc + laptop switched on.

7.05pm - Internet not working o_O

7:10pm - TV set-top box and router switched off and reset

7:15pm - Still not working so sleep for a few hours

10:45pm - Thought it might have fixed itself/Temp issue?? but NO!!

Repeat 7.10pm

10.59pm - Ring the trusty StevenJ in hopes that he may have an idea... after a few mins of testing it appeared it still wasnt going to work...
Rang virgin media matter of mins later for them to tell me to reset like i had already previously done 8 times in a row!!!!!

Went and did it a lil differently than i had previously and rang them back, this time i was told that my belkin wireless router (3rd party) was probably the cause of the problem and was given a phone number to buy a new router (one they provide so bollocks to that :P ) After several minutes of discussion with me saying numberous times that it wasnt the router (not using the router and the connection still wouldnt work) i realised i was getting strung along and wasnt willing to pay for the phonecall as i wasnt getting anywhere.

Went to bed in the hope that it would be fixed by the morning (i was been optimistic 8| what a mistake that was) and still no luck...

Anyone have any ideas to get this working again or what the hell i should do regarding this crappy net company?

/edit This means i aint gonna be in-game for a significant amount of time im thinking... Only can read forums at work now :(

im on Virgin Media and it happens all the time the net go's down ABIT
but they normaly manage to get it back up and working trust me it will have nothing to do with ur wireless or anything its all them because when i phone them up when mine gos down all they say to do is reset it then if that doesnt work they pass you on to someone else trying not to blame themselfs for the wank net but i have to say when it is up and working its fine no worries.

Being male does not classify you as a bloke. Sorry for offending the pink brigade here but it's just a fact. :p I can't post what I really want to say as it'll get edited with homophobic/crude but you can all guess what I mean. :D
Having fit women in is not a reason to watch it either. Porn has fit women in it also but I myself prefer the real thing to either of them. ;)

10.59pm - Ring the trusty StevenJ in hopes that he may have an idea... after a few mins of testing it appeared it still wasnt going to work... You checked your phone for that time, didn't you! I just thought "No, it was later than that", so checked my phone... 10:59 :p

I'm no network engineer, so all I could really suggest was powering down, plugging laptop straight into the modem, etc. More info for someone who may be able to help (Doc H? :P) is that at first it appeared that just DNS was down, but then Dan was unable to ping ip addresses too. There are no service bulletins for North Yorkshire either..

P.S. I'm with Jodo on the Hollyoaks issue.

I could have checked my phone... or i could have an awesome memory

Tried plugging laptop straight into the modem, no luck with that either... Gonna ring my uncle tonight as he has helped me soo many times with pc issues, failing that there will be some more harsh words used down the phone towards Virgin ;)

dan. are you on the set top box bb or the stand alone modem. if its the first one im betting thats your problem. its a pos. i think because of where you are theres a good chance as your ex ntl (i think but i not sure) so if thats the case i would highly suggest telling who ever you speak to you want it replaced. if your on a stand alone modem then errrrr i dunno ;)

if its the stb tho i could probably get it sorted out for you.

oh yeah. back on topic. who is that blonde chick in holly oaks who looks like gwen stefani with tits? :D we like that.

Yarp its the set-tob box thing... If its the set-top box that needs replacing is that something that i gotta pay for or will they just do it without charge with it being their problem and all?

P.S. im not sure if u mean Carmel? that McQueens lass?

After going through a few forums i came across a link to Ntl website

'If you have a set-top box
Online upgrade is not currently available for customers with a set-top box.

If you have a set-top box and wish to upgrade your service, please call us on 0845 454 0000.'

Internet still isnt working as of 5mins ago so i guess this is gonna have to be the last resort. Supposedly the set-top box i have now is limited to 1mb net connection aswell... AFAIK i've being paying for a higher speed yet only receiving the shoddy 1mb.
Shouldnt they inform people of such things instead of swindling ppl out of money... having found that ive been paying more than what i receiving im now rather pissed off

try hard reseting the modem? Either cut the power for a while or press the reset button(on all my modems they have been fucking small on the back somewhere, have to press em with a pen or something)

I just spoke to Dan to let him know this, and he says thanks - but he's just managed to get some sense out of the chap at Virgin he was talking to... after 2+ hours on the phone :D He had a few choice words that I shouldn't really post here.

Turns out there's some issue in his region affecting set top box broadband, which will be fixed in the morning. Apparently.

2 hours tonight, plus 1 last night to figure that out... sounds suspicious to me!

It's cos they charge for the phone call if they determine the fault isn't at their end now. They seem very reluctant to put any effort into finding out too.

we're with virgin, but we're ex-telewest. and being perfectly honest we've had no trouble whatsoever
although where i work they are ex-ntl, and apparently the people who have that find it abysmal.

so i guess its limited to what the provider used to be, before branson took over.

and yes, i do have a stand alone modem and no stb.

Back on topic....

Hollyoaks is crap.

It's the same fucking thing everyday. Shitty montages to shitty indy music. All the girls are vacuous in the head and vagina. It's crap. Use the time watching it to get laid.

People I can't stress the importance of nookie!

Steve tell him even if there is an outage he is better off getting that box swapped out to a normal digi box and a stand alone modem. i can sort that out very easy for him. if you read this dan just let me know.

and yes i know how bad it can be sometimes. it depends where you end up getting through to half the time. thats my opinion.

Problem got fixed in the end, was a fault with something in my area (affected 4 York postcode areas and 5 Leeds ones) There was a total of 5000 customers that was affected by the problem and it took em 5days to get off their asses to fix it...

After numberous phonecalls and them telling me to do all sorts of crazy configuration things on pc and whatnot i was told (on the 4th phonecall on the second day?) that it was their fault and they were working to get it fixed. They went on to say it would be fixed at XX time and it was never done when they told me(this happened a few times  )

On the day it WAS actually fixed i was told to switch off the settop box for 4 hours (no tv for 4 hours WTF!!!) and when i whacked it back on i had INTERNETS!!!!11

Just a thought, because I noticed that all channels on the Virgin TV Medium package are also free on the satellite bar about four channels.

Why not use a satellite:
Drop down to Lidl and buy:
Lidl SL65 (a free to air satellite receiver)
A satellite dish.

Put dish in backgarden/ attach to roof, hang out window ...
point dish at 28.8E (astra2 satellite that Sky and Freesat use)
The channels include the usual FreeView stuff:
BBC1, BBC2, BBC2, BBC3, ITV1, ITV2, ITV3, ITV4, Channel 4, Channel Five, Five Life, Five US - Sky Three.
Bad Movies, East Cinema, Film4, Horror Channel, Matinee Movies, True Movies
B4, B4U Music, Bubble Hits, Channel U, Chart show TV, Classic FM TV, Fizz, Musicians Channel, R Music TV, The Vault, Zee Music
CBBC Channel, CBeebie's, CITV, POP, Tiny POP
Sky News, BBC NEWS 24, BBC Parliament, CCTV-9, CNN, Community Channel, Euro News.

I have heard that Film4 and SkyThree will be available at some point.
If you went for a motorised dish setup then there is MTV & Eurosport in German for free and plenty of interesting new channels in English on other satellites if you are that way inclined.

Total cost is about £60 and there is no monthly subscription. Perhaps less. There are other receivers that one can use instead.

I spoke to a guy earlier who is with tiscali. he wasnt exactly clear on what had happened but he was enquiring about getting broadband. He explained that through some kind of acquisition of a previous isp he was now with tiscali themselves. they had done some kind of updrade to their network and subsequently burned out about 5000 thousand customers modems.

can you say ooops?

Or get a freeview box which is easier to install and less likely to get vandalised or stolen.

Film4 and SkyThree are already available on Freeview, they have been for ages. I'm not sure, but one channel in the freesat list you may have missed is the BBC HD channel.

TBH, either with freeview or freesat the extra channels aren't really worth it just they are full of repeats and dodgy looking goods on the shopping channels...well except for E4 for watching Hollyoaks of course! ;)
