Well laptops really. I am getting a laptop, mainly for use with Uni such as essays and the net etc so I don't need anything fancy. Limit is £380 so any suggestions?

Had a quick look and found this (http://www.comet.co.uk/cometbrowse/product.do?sku=379891) not sure what else is out there though, haven't had much time to look unfortunately so thought I'd give you all something to do :p

Thanks,
Matan

Try ebuyer.com. They usually have budget PC's, laptops and components.

Wicked, I checked it out and I found this (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=0&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=128832) which is by far the best I've found. Anyone see anything wrong with it?

Looking good dude

...but its not. It's just cheap I admit, but its big, its heavy and its processor is not that great. Worse is that it uses Vista... When you go for a laptop you need it light and small...

Here is my suggestion instead: http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore.woa/wa/RSLID?nnmm=browse&mco=520F94DC&node=home/macbook/macbook
Its a lot more expensive yea, but its got all the productivity software you will ever need, built in. You get www.thinkfree.com desktop or online version instead of that office suite and you are doing business.

i would suggest this computer it's a bit over your budget but it's a good deal here (http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/126338/rb/0).

When someone gives a budget, surely you try and stay within it when you're giving recommendations? :)

well his budget is £380, the price of the notebook, that i suggested, is £417.
it's about £40 i think it worth... doesn't it?

Maybe, I should clarify however that this it's my B-day soon and me Dad said he was gonna get me one as it'll help out a lot for Uni. So his budget is actually £350 but I asked if he could go a bit over if needed hence I said £380, so it's not really negotiable at all unfortunately.

And Setlec, it's £417 before VAT so the full price is actually £489.99, quite a lot over the budget! lol

Same to you jini, I would love one of those babies but the cheapest one there is £699.99 so no way of getting one of those.

anyway budget is low, but at least try and find really small and light solutions. 15" is way to big. 17" and its not a laptop anymore (its only laptop by its name: not only is it heavy, but its also very power hungry as well).
try and find something with a 12" monitor

Well, while i agree on the Vista thingy with Jini here (You might want to ask the reseller to get WinXP with it instead of Vista and probably get a better prices also this way) i disagree on the size he mentioned:

If you are going to use it at campus you will want to have a screen that you can read and work(!) on at bad light without your eyes hurting. The smaller it is, the worse it is readable under bad light, and the light in the most lecture-rooms is not the best.

What kind of crazy Uni do you go to? The lighting's only terrible when they turn them down to use a projector. Or at least it's been like that at all the Unis I've been to.

Well i don't have a single course that does not use a beamer or projector in the hearings.

OK, well I've found one from Tesco's that is 14". It's £399 but we can get 10% discount so it works out at £360, whaddya think: http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.200-2976.aspx

Also, is Vista really that bad considering it's primary use will be internet access, and the use of Microsoft Office and maybe a few of my older games that I still play from time to time?

For a system with integrated GFX, yes.

Vista is fine on sytsems that can feed it (Current mainstream systems). For older setups or components that are not used by the masses, Vista is a real bitch.

At least my choice (alltho i allready had some argue about the "worth"/"price" of Vista with Jini ;) ) would allways be XP when deciding between XP Home or Vista Home Basic. On top of it, it might save you some bucks :p

Gotta agree with jini and Max, stay away from Vista ..... (it's a horrible beta, :p ).

Anyway, Dell has some good laptops, under $1K. When I called them to buy mine, they cut the $125 shipping cost, too.

Here is how its going in terms of OSs:

OSX Leopard > OSX Tiger >>> XP > Vista.

Im not kidding. OSX means business. Particularly the newest one, leopard: http://events.apple.com.edgesuite.net/d7625zs/event/
In terms of personal productivity and creativity its simply unbeatable. Vista was a disappointment.

As for the screens, Todays screens are very good. You dont need more than 12-13" for some internet/office, and please, you CAN read letters in these resolutions!! However, carrying around 2 instead of 3 kilos means a lot in long term... Trust me there
