27 hours to japan? nobby what freakin airline are you flying with and what route did they take? via the north pole then down to the south pole and up accross australia or what? its 23 hours to here (ive done it 3 times) with a lay over in singapore or bangkok usually......

Though English is taught in schools, it's more about being able to translate written english than speaking it, as in all probability that's all they'll ever need to know. Pronounciation isn't worked on that much.

That said the touristy bits of Tokyo should have people who deal with english or americans on a regular basis. Venture outside of that and things will get tricky though.

but they cant learn a language. ok chinese works well but english i never saw a japanese that speak english that i can understand. its like a voicemachine from 1988. Its annoying to listen sometimes. koreans are much cooler they sound a bit kawaii when they speak english and germans oFF Courz Tu wi spiek teh bezt Inglisch! iven wen its wrong wi saund most lowly!!!
so be prapered on that. and my experience is when you go in a shop and they speak good english they going to rip you off.
Check the prices before you go. You should know how much cost the most things in everage so you dont get ripped off.
and of course have fun there maybe we meet cause i maybe have to go to akita in some weeks (but i want go back to good old germany :( )

i know a ton of friends of mine who are japanese and speak good english. they study it hard.
One of my housemates is Japanese....
Well.. kinda. He was born in Austria to Japanese parents. He went to an international school so he speaks English, German and Japanese pretty much fluently. Though British coloquialisms I sometimes have to explain to him, like 'bog' meaning toilet.
Problem he has though is that he can't read kanji, only katakana and hiragana. So when he goes to Japan he has to get his parents or cousins to translate for him :p.

Don't forget a spare debit card for emergency funds to keep safe somewhere. I dunno what the crime rate is like in Japan, but Tokyo is a capital city, so there's a chance of you being mugged or something. Always have a backup plan if you get screwed over ;)
Shame you're not in a hotel as they'd have a safe. You need somewhere secure to stash your passport, return ticket, emergency funds / cashcard etc. Then again, with your Japanese skills, i'm sure you could persuade a friendly local bank manager to help :)

Have a sweet time in Tokyo then, though you can rest assured the crime rate is the lowest of all industrialized countries so far.
I'm going to Japan in October for the third time now and will stay again for 3 weeks. To get a credit card and a JR railpass is the best thing you could do, IMHO. Japanese railways are the best in the world. Some banks didn't exchange travellers cheques even though they had the american express advertisals in window :wtf:
Check out some Izakayas as well as Karaoke boxes or bars, it's quite fun. Some people in Tokyo can't speak english for real, though i hardly have seen any americans or britons who would speak japanese in a way which one would call decent either :lol:
