Right, so I got to the stage I've made the final cut of my Neocron video, and it's been rendered by adobe premiere. So I now have a nice big 3gig AVI file thats needs converting to something smaller that can be played on everyone's PC.

So I like to ask which codec is the best to use, and also what are the ideal settings to use with the codec.

download virtual dub:

either use xvid codec or divx codec.

pay attention on the bitrates. higher bitrate = better quality

xvid or H264. Play around a bit to find a happy medium between bitrate and size.

It's amazing what bitrates can do to the quality. A small tweek makes a file slightly bigger, but it looks 10x's better.

There was a few times I did convert the video and only watched the first 5 seconds before binning it becuase it looked crap.

One other tip for anyone who read this thread, don't forget to convert the sound! A 63meg soundtrack on a 40meg video is not funny - I used the Lame mp3 encoder (http://lame.sourceforge.net/index.php), since the Windows XP MP3 encoder can only go upto 56k which sounds...shite.

that's a great layer3 encoder :) one of the best.

@Brammers : about this do you know this tool ? Razor Lame (http://www.dors.de/razorlame/index.php)

No I don't, not sure if I would need it, as the Windows binary downloads for Lame come with a ACM filter, so all programs like Virtual dub can pick it up.

m8 ...

just export ur movie as dvd mpg

and then download the whole divx package with the converter tool (not for free but for free u know what I mean xD) and insall it...

Then set the quality u want in the converter and drag and drop the mpg file and ull see ull get a nice quality movie with a low size ;)

easyest way...

Since yo are referring to sound, when are we going to see a cool pvp NC video with the normal sounds on it? (would prefer NC2.1 as its more fast)

Yes ! exactly what i though while watching videos from neocron's video archive ^^ (http://forum.neocron.com/showthread.php?t=137875)
At least, leaving a small level of game's SFX in the mixdown, or best, adjusting the SFX's volume in regards of what's happen in the movie.

It can be done, but there is an annoying problem if you are using Ventrilo (Or Teamspeak) at the same time.

There is only 1 recording input channel, which can map to 1 other channel, such as the WAV channel or the mic channel. So when Fraps starts recording it switches the record channel from the mic to the wav channel, so when you speak on ventrilo, people hear the sounds effects instead of you.

The end result is usally one dead player because he didn't get his buffs, and several clanmates with ear-aches from the loud noise of the sound effects.

Edit: If anyone know how to record the sound from one source, let us know!

Theres a whole load of noises you just don't want to hear however, as well as various problems with voicecomms which are effectivley necessary.
A better way of doing it is somewhat "movie style" ie the sound effects are added afterwards - the "Enemy at the Gates" movie did that to a limited extent with readded Doom Beamer firing and impact sounds. Its time consuming, but you could add quite a lot of weapon sounds back in to create the effect you are seemingly after.

Well,I trust it's not that difficult for one, to switch off ventrilos and launch and drone for some real ingame footage, which ultimately is, what someone can truly experience.

I believe that a nice video like this could be the best promoter for neocron. Also, with ingame sound, you can edit dramatic effects by fading in and out alternatively real ingame sounds versus a nice music piece like the one Krinahk was using ( I particularly like the opposite of very fast gaming action versus very soothing music. Thats why I liked Krinahk's music so much and this is why I also like Bramm's.)
